If you want to see if it records properly, measure your pulse manually using your index finger while also looking at the rhythm on the smartphone. If both are roughly the same, then that means the app is working properly. Both were the same for me
It's not fake, the operating principle is the same of heart rate monitors, basically when you put your finger on the camera the camera sees a red light, that's the light that passes through your finger, now if your blood is not moving the light will have a certain intensity but if your blood IS moving than the color intensity will drop because the light gets distorted, now this thing happens every time your heart beats so what the app is doing is simply counting how many times the light gets distorted and here it is. You can also see this by yourself if you open the camera app on your phone and put your finger on the camera you will notice that the image is pulsing.
