  • After using Epson Scan for almost a year, since I first started shooting film, I've decided to give SilverFast a try and got completely blown away with the results. I know there are quite a few methods out there, but using this software produces great results. To be honest, I think it really comes down to personal preference. It doesn't matter how you scan your photos as long you love what you come up with. It's your work at the end of the day.
    SilverFast is a complete game-changer for me, but it doesn't mean I should stop trying other scanning methods.

    I'm having some issues doing this. I have an Epson V800 and a piece of ANR glass from scan tech. I'm trying to scan medium format negatives by placing them on the flatbed and then putting the anr glass on top of the negatives and scanning in Silverfast. Instead of getting negatives, I'm just getting some colorful lines and not much else. I'm using Glass-->Negative-->48 to 24 bit. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

    • @russellrabanal
      @russellrabanal  3 роки тому

      Hey Drew, not sure what the issue is. What you see here are my settings for Silverfast. No hidden settings. The only difference is our scanners but I doubt that’s what causing you to get just coloured lines. I could be wrong. - You should try troubleshooting it. Put your settings at default. Try Epson Scan software and see if you can scan your negatives. - Hop on my Discord (link in description) and share your issue in there. Let me know if you get things sorted.

      Silverfast manual says that you should not include any part of the film border whatsoever or negafix will be off. It makes a huge difference for negafix. Please don't include the border!
      Nick carver has a good video where he talks about this.

    • @russellrabanal
      @russellrabanal  3 роки тому +4

      Peter Farr I have tested my scans between having my negative stay flat on the glass or with the tray and both have similar results. Telling people what not to do doesn’t give them the opportunity to experiment. What I do works for me and it can work for others. If it doesn’t follow the manual or follow the other guys who talk about scanning, I’m fine with those who disagree. Whatever makes you happy, that matters the most.

    • @peterfarr9591
      @peterfarr9591 3 роки тому

      The corrective algorithm works in a very specific way. If you like the look of negafix with the border left on, then you simply like the look of a color cast and inaccurate film stock correction.
      The same is true for any software. Read the manual. This is about optimizing corrective algorithms. Those algorithms don't work as well if they aren't used the way the software developers built them to be used.

    or is it like
    --film--
    --ANR glass--

    Hey Russell ! Dope your pictures at night ! Any tips to share about exposure of your film (which one by the way) ? Regards, Simon from France.

    • @russellrabanal
      @russellrabanal  4 роки тому +2

      I use a medium format camera that doesn’t have a light meter built in. So your best option is to buy a light meter like Sekonic, download a light meter app on your phone, or use a digital camera to read your exposure. My night shots on film were shot handheld at f3.5 at 1/60.

    • @IsThatYouSimon
      @IsThatYouSimon 4 роки тому

      Russell Rabanal i have one but i was wondering how much you overexpose at night for example?

    • @russellrabanal
      @russellrabanal  4 роки тому +1

      Simon Guillemin If my photos are dark, I’ll adjust the exposure during the scanning process or use Adobe LR. Again, I don’t shoot photos on a tripod and the GW690iii has its limitations. If I wanted to achieve something that I want from my photos (if it’s even needed at all), its all done during post processing. All these photos are straight from the camera properly exposed based on my exposure readings on my device or app. These don’t need any post editing at all. at least in my opinion. I’m happy with these photos.

    • @russellrabanal
      @russellrabanal  4 роки тому +2

      All my night shots I always keep it at 1/60 3.5 on a roll of Portra 400. I haven’t done a lot of night photography with this camera but i got good results at that setting.
