- We're making our land dreams a reality! And the first step is to create a live wind-barrier - of keystone species - to protect our future orchard, veggie garden, wild-flower field, etc. This means we're planting 50+ native trees and shrubs in one go. But will they survive?

hi, you also need to be careful with using that "fresh" manure. It's too hot for the plants, especially young plants (and veggies) can get burned from it. The manure needs to degrade more. So you can use it on compost piles with other elements (grass clippings, kitchen scups, wood chips et cetera), have it degrade a couple of months. then you can use it into the ground. the only fresh manure that you could use is from rabbits.
what I've seen at other homesteads UA-camrs, that you can put the tree/bush in the ground (indeed not too deep), put cardboard around the trunk, some manure on the cardboard (but not to close to the trunk), then cover with mulch (again not too close to the base). Then water and with the rain, the nutrients of the manure get into the ground slowly, and no risk of burning.
also creating mini-terrasses can help (since your lands looks to be too steep for swales).
and an idea for flowers and more bushes, harvest seeds the coming year when you're hiking and cuttings from bushes. though you might need to consult the forest rangers beforehand, who might be helpful as well (like that foundation you went to).
and you can still seed now a lot of things to nourish the soil/ground: clover (white and red), alfalfa, barley, any kind of beans, and vegetables. even if you would not eat the veggies (or they don't ripen enough), it's better for the ground than that grass. look at where you can buy seeds in bulk for farmers.

Hi there ! You can't generalize about fires in "the north of Spain ".
North of Spain goes from France to Galicia, that's Pais Vasco, Cantabria Asturias and Galicia communities.
I can assure you no one fire of this kind happens in Basque Country, not many in Asturias and yes a lot in Galicia and Cantabria.

Pretty sure the little one you found and protected (38:05) is an ash.
It's a big mistake to put these fresh bamboos in the land to support the new trees. They will make roots in the land and unless they be useful you will destroy your land and your trees. To use the bamboo for that reason they must be absolutely dry. Cut them now and leave them for a year at a dry place with a lot of sun. Greetings from Kreta Greece. actually that might not be true, Christina. Not all bamboos are bad. there are two different kind of bamboos. Running and Clumping. RUNNING bamboo is invasive, and can indeed destroy your land (because the shoots can "run" 20 m. under ground before it sprouts). CLUMPING bamboos also create new sprouts, but only next to the "mother"plant, therefor is NOT invasive.
The bamboos that Wale&Me used looked to be more a clumping type of bamboo.
So IF they make roots, it might be a good thing 🙂 though I have my doubts if that will happen.
@Wale&Me Hardy bamboo in your Spanish mountains might be a great thing as wind barrier, and support species for other trees.

@@WaleandMe look at what type of bamboo it is. clumping bamboo could really help you with wind protection. which might have been the motivation of the previous owners to put it in... if it is clumping, you can easily propagate by cutting of new shoots from the mother plant. watch some UA-cam-clips about bamboo. it's an amazing plant (the clumping type)
In General i would use bigger posts, the thin posts don't give enough support against the strong winds you have and also not against a 30kg goat. It's better to do it once proper than to loose many trees in the future.
You have to lift the trees a little because you buried the part where the grafting is. You can see a part at the trunk where it is a little bigger and if you look closely you see where the tree was grafted. This part has to be over ground, not buried

The important thing with planting new trees is they need watering well for the first year also it’s good to clear an area around the base of the trees and if you have rabbits in the area you need to protect the young trunks with a plastic pipe and support the trunk with a pole

How about trying to join the sides of the wire netting by running a stick down the last loops on each side. That way you ‘weave’ them together, and have a stick for holding it into the ground? (Not sure if cut bamboo will not try to root if you use it- it’s a bit of a menace - difficult to remove without taking roots completely out- I have the scars!).

That’s such a good idea! We’ll have to try that. As for the bamboo, we’ve nos realised that fresh bamboo can root, so we’re going to exchange it all for other sticks 🫣♥️
Every little tree needs 2 stakes! The 2 stakes help to keep the tree in place, very little fibrous roots are able to grow into the ground. Without 2 stakes the fibrous roots would tear off again and again. Some people take only 1 stake, but than the tree " can move like a dog`s tail" and it would not help.

I’m not certain they can re-root, or how well they can, I’m not much of a gardener- just that it spreads!! I was told that if you cut it down, it comes back stronger, and that I needed to dig to get the roots. But I think you’d be better researching yourself to be sure. Perhaps burning the ends of the sticks might work?
Stitching the chicken wire together should work though. Good luck. Love what you’re doing.

don't forget to put small wire cages around your trees to protect them from the rabbits ( tall ones for goats)
if buy a mix like you have you will have some fruits sooner than later;
a wind break is a great idea, you'll probably need it about 3 rows thick eventually

yehhh fires too often will eventually kill the earth, they really need to give it a couple of years break; we burn off here about every 2-3yrs so we don't have fire storms

it's nice to see the hydrangeas greening up inbetween the bamboo; you might have to go round & make your own fields of wild flowers; have seen many there have herbs in, like yarrow, chamomile, lavender & many daisies, perhaps the nursery that helped with the fruit trees could give you some ideas? i also think that random plantings of different bulbs would look wonderful too

The explanation for the fires sounds like here as well, but here after a fire the 'fynbos' in our area comes back with a vengeance, but if you have a another fire too soon, it can't recover from it. The place you visited looks like the perfect place to help you achieve your goals.👍

Great video. You are doing your bit to try and help Mother Earth. That really is all any of us can do. If we each do a little bit then at least something is being done. As all your trees are native to the area they should all survive your temperature fluctuations. As you rightly pointed out bamboo isn’t a native species. It will however grow at every given opportunity. It’s therefore not the best material to use for staking or marking your trees. I would urge you to find alternative materials and replace the bamboo as soon as possible. Otherwise you could well end up with a bamboo plantation. It is virtually impossible to get rid of it!

Lovely video both of you! Citrus and pomegranate may be a challenge where you are, but not necessarily impossible. Seeing as there are so many stones, it may help to create a sun trap with south-facing alcoves or a serpentine wall. You can also use the south-facing walls of the cabins if they have good sun exposure and plant windbreakers on either side to create a warmer micro climate. It'll take some time to create the conditions, but seeing as you're there for the long run and Warner loves pomegranate... it may be worth a try! ❤

Have you looked at British hedge rows? A form of natural fencing using the tres you’ve bought. Looking good, hopefully they get settled in 👍

I am very concerned about trees and nature like you are. I found that we have so much in common. There are many positive examples of how things can be changed in communities. Here is the incredible story of how degraded gorse-infested farmland has been regenerated back into beautiful New Zealand's Banks Peninsula native forest. It took some time to convince farmers to change their way of farming but yes, it worked. Short documentary is called: 'Fools & Dreamers' - Hinewai Nature Reserve on youtube. By the way, this title is not a coincidence - this is how many farmers see people who care about the natural world (natural environment), like you and me. Some farmers just do not know that there are better ways to become income by changing its focus to reforestation as it comes with footprint income in the EU.

If you're new apple trees are grafted.. The graft should stay above ground.Otherwise the Roots will grow from the graft instead of deeper and you will have a less desirable tree.

Let ervoor op dat je je bomen niet te diep plant, de eerste twee bomen die je in de grond steekt zijn geent op een andere onderstam, dat deel van de boom hebben jullie mee begraven, beter terug wat hoger trekken, want anders heb je de kans dat het deel die begraven is begint scheuten te krijgen ipv je fruit die je geplant hebt :) Beter ook in het eerste jaar geen bloemen aan de boom te laten, dat neemt veel energie van de boom, dat hij eigenlijk nodig heeft om stevig te gaan groeien. Als jullie zo dicht bij een koeienweide zitten, kan het nooit geen kwaad om wekelijks een aantal kruiwagens met koeienmest rond je bomen te gooien, niet tegen de stam, want dat is te zuur. Maar rond je boom, dat geeft voeding, zorgt dat de bomen niet uitdrogen, en dat hebben ze net de eerste drie jaar zeker nodig! Succes!

Do you want to compost horse manure? You don’t wanna put it directly on the plants you can burn the roots this way
