Couple things. First, Do not use 0w20 anymore. There is a tsb about to be released referencing oil pressure issues on this engine. Use the dexos2 5w30. I believe the update might include a new oil cap and a service addendum at some point this summer if they follow thru with it, check your manual it is an approved alternative.
Tristan, I have not hear of any changes to the oil recommendation. The manual only references DexosD and that is only 0w20. Dexos2 is a low ash oil just like DexosD to protect the DPF but it is 5w30 so there really is no other alternative as of today. If they do change it they will also need to issue a new oil cap. We will see. If you have a link to your source I would love to have it. I'll do some digging on my side also.
You should let the engine sit off for an hour before checking the level. It says this in the engine manual. It takes a loooong time for all the oil to drain back to the crankcase. Lots of guys with these new GM trucks don't realize this and freak out thinking that their engine is burning oil. As they too found out, waiting that long really does make a difference in oil level readings on the dipstick. In fact, Ram recommends waiting an hour before checking oil level with the 3.0 Ecodiesel too.
Thanks for the comment, I have waited the recommended time and I am using some oil. Not a lot but some. The more I tow the quicker the oil level goes down. I'm still hoping it will seal up but only time will tell.
@@CJIEngineering Give the oil more time to drain back. Keep track of any oil use and if it's more than 1 quart every 2,000 miles, GM will cover repairs after an oil consumption test is performed at the dealer. They change the oil, fill it to correct level, and seal the engine. You drive it like normal and stop at the dealer to see how much it's using. They document it and GM either fixes the engine or buys it back.

One question for you, how long do you wait to measure the oil level after you shut the truck off? I have found that looking at it as soon as you shut it off will give you a "false" low level. Our owner's manual says wait 1 hr before checking..... I hate that too but being 1/2 qt low right after you shut it down will be probably only 15-20% down after waiting longer. Let me know if you see a difference. Mine with 24,000 miles on it seems to be sealing up, I put in 1/2 quart after about 3,800 miles this last time.

Hi Chad! Love the updates on the new Silverado with 3.0 Duramax Diesel. Have you asked the dealer if this is normal for the new engine to consume oil? Because keep in mind, any oil burned is going thru the DPF filter and that’s not good for the emission system. Am not familiar with the pickup truck diesel, but I have a semi 2014 Freightliner Cascadia with a Detroit diesel with just over 777,000 miles and change the synthetic blend oil every 50,000 miles and am only low maybe 2 quarts of oil and that’s because some minor oil leaks
I have not taken it to the dealership yet. Typically I avoid the service department and much as I can, in fact most of them didn't even know you could get the 3.0 Duramax in the 1500 :(. I changed the oil today at 3,725 miles, 50% on the oil life monitor and sent a sample out for analysis. I should get the results in about a week and I'll see what it says. If something looks wrong my next step is to talk to some of my engineering buddies that might be interested in digging in a little deeper. If they tell me to take it in then I would see what the service department can do but as of today I'm not really too concerned. The plan is to keep an eye on it and see if it gets worse or hopefully better as the engine breaks in.
You can use whatever oil you like but I would recommend that you don't use a synthetic blend because there is no regulation as to the ratio of synthetic to conventional oil... if it were me I would either go full synthetic or conventional.... obviously the synthetic oils have their advantage but that comes with a price tag as well and since it's in a big Detroit it probably takes around 5 to 8 gallons of oil if I had to guess, so running full synthetic would be quite expensive but better for your engine...
It's a lot like the fuel gauge, it will stay at 100% for a long time then it will walk down fairly fast. 1 bar was still 20% left on my truck, about 1 gallon. Thanks for the update.

Mine does the same thing...fuel gauge too. My fuel gauge sits at full for the 1st 100 - 125 miles and then drops off. I have 3,575 miles as of today (bought 1-29-20). I've filled the DEF once. Let it go to 1 bar below half and filled it. WOW....I thought the truck was on fire during the first regen!!! Smelt really bad. I just emailed Chad but I'm sitting at the mileage mentioned and the oil on my dipstick is barely registering...the tab just below the hash marks. I've not done any towing at all. Will do. I'm going to be changing the oil today and doing some under vehicle videos that will get posted a little later. Thanks for the suggestions. Stay tuned :)
I have some footage taken just haven't been able to pull it together into a cohesive video. What I can say is it doesn't react the way that makes me conferrable to use it in stop and go traffic. It is too slow to speed up, leaves a big gap and people in Detroit will fit in a hole barely bigger than their car or truck, and the braking is a little too late. It will brake hard and keep you from hitting the person in front but then I worry about the person in the rear...
Chad Ivan gotcha. Hopefully they will fix it. I drove a new Ford Raptor with ACC in stop and go and it was fantastic. Trying to figure out which on of the full size rigs to get - but I drive in stop and go traffic 18 miles each way. So ACC would be hugely beneficial. I also like the idea of a diesel. Nice rig you have, thanks for the informative videos!
@@taylordoingstuff is your drive on the highway, divided road, city streets or rural road? I have footage on I96 between US23 and Novi, MI. I can do some other roads if you would like, it would make for a more complete review. Thanks again for the question. I hope I can help.
Thanks for making content on this cutting edge new truck! Can you do a TFL style highway loop video? Unloaded, speed limit, careful acceleration, hand calculated MPG? Thanks!
I don't know if I should buy the 2.8 Canyon duramax or the 3.0 silverado for daily driving, what is the difference in mpg from your Colorado to the Silverado? Thank you
So this is a great question. These are the things that we considered, MPG, ride, interior room, towing capability and tech features. I loved the Colorado, 29mpg on the highway, good ride, small but acceptable interior space, 7600 lb towing (little low for what I needed), not a lot of Tech. Why I switched to the Silverado, 26.8mpg best so far on Highway (STD mirrors would be better), great ride, huge interior, 9,300lb towing, tons of tech. The 3.0l with the 10speed is quick, 0-60 in 8 seconds at 800ft of elevation, 2.8l with 6speed is about 9.5 seconds. If you live in the city the Colorado is really easy to park, with the Tech in the Silverado you can park pretty easy but it's a big truck. I hope this helps. Thanks for the question and for watching.
@@CJIEngineering So I have a Airstream 23' trailer that weighs in at 6400 lbs wet. This look to me enough of a truck to comfortably drive and go over 7'000 ft in elevation and back. Would you say it pulls easy enough without struggle? Thanks.
Thanks a bunch for your videos on the new 3.0 What are you seeing for mileage when not towing? I put in 100 - 250 miles per day and am curious about non-towing mpg.
So the best full tank that I have had was 26.2 mpg. The truck says I've done 29.8 over a 50 mile stretch and 33.0 over a 25 mile stretch. My drive into the office is 45 miles each way at speeds around 75mph. I think if you had the standard mirrors you would be getting 1-2 mpg better. In my opinion it's the best for long drives like yours. I'll keep posting how the truck is doing as it breaks in :). Thanks for watching and leaving a comment.
The camper weighs 7,400lbs without any water in the tanks, that is how a tow it. We have been getting just over 13mpg driving 65mph in some pretty windy conditions. Thanks for the question.
Congratulations on your new truck. I would absolutely still buy one again. The 2021 Tahoe and Suburban are also now going to be available with the same engine and transmission so that would also be on my list now :). I might get one to replace the Cruze Diesel.
Thanks for the reply. I drive a 6.2L Sierra and was intrigued by the half ton diesel market and have been waiting for the half ton Duramax. It's here so I'm looking at pulling the trigger. Went with the RST trim. So far driving it i have been impressed. Signing papers on it tomorrow
@@derekm3304 The 6.2L with the 10 speed is also a really nice setup. I test drove one before my truck came in and really liked it. The DFM system on that engine is way better than the AFM system on the prior generation of trucks, smooth and pretty darn fuel efficient. Let me know how you like it, I always like to have others opinions.
I've had some issues with my 6.2 in the 8 speed. Shifting rough and what not. It's a 2018. It's a great truck just really want the diesel. My friends tell me to get the 6.6 duramax but I don't NEED it. Guess I don't really need the 3.0 either 😂
I agree the truck really shouldn't be burning any oil but it does a little bit right now. The check engine light is only one because the truck is in accessory mode, not running yet :)
A lot of that oil loss is all your components being saturated like they're supposed to be. Although Diesels Will go through more oil than a gasoline engine. It being a new engine, some of that oil is technically still in your engine somewhere. You will notice the drop an oil level will subside later on.
I'm not towing and in 500 miles, I've used about 1/4 tank of DEF. That's absurd! I've also regened 4 times in 360 miles. My engine runs hot and oil pressure is all over the place. My fuel filter won't make 10,000 Miles event though the manual says 30,000 miles. My 6.7 Cummins went through a tank of DEF every 10,000 Miles and the fuel/ oil didn't need to be changed untold 15,000 miles. I'm not impressed with this engine at all!
Will any DEF fluid work or does GM recommend a spefic brand? I had a '14 Grand Cherokee with the Eco diesel that could only use Mopar brand. That stuff was crazy expensive. I think a gallon cost over $20. Very interested in these new GM diesels. Keep up the reviews!
DEF has been standardize so you can use any brand you would like with the GM diesel engines but I would highly recommend that you buy it from a pump at a fueling station. They are selling it at Speedway Truck Filling pumps in Michigan and it is also sold at most Pilot, Flying J, Loves, Rutters and other larger fueling stations near highways. The reason for saying that is that DEF can only be stored for a fairly short period of time, I believe it is 12-16 months before the vehicle will consider it out of spec and force you to either add good DEF to the mix or worst case flush the old out if the tank. If you had good luck with the Jeep then you used enough to keep it fresh. At places like Walmart the jugs could be there for a long time so I steer clear of them. Thanks for the question and I'll keep everyone updated on both the good and some areas that need a little work, mostly software for the lane keeping and the apps that run on the truck center screen.
Cheeky Mainah! I buy Supertech from Walmart. If you look on the package it will have a manufactured date and every time I’ve bought it it was like a week old. After I fill the tank with DEF I store the rest in my closet in the house (dark, constant temp). Works great.
@@CJIEngineering ...thanks for the update! I live in northern Maine, five miles from the Canadian border, eh! No DEF pump stations nearby and DEF from Wal Mart gives me no warm fuzzy feeling. Not in the market to buy just yet...still in research mode.
@Jony The check engine light was on because I put the truck into accessory mode, it was not running. I have almost 7,500 miles on it now and have not had any check engine problems yet :). Thanks for watching and commenting.
Change your oil every 5K miles regardless of what the oil life management may tell you. Your first oil change should have been at 3K miles along with oil analysis and then every 5K miles thereafter.
I think I might be changing it every 4K miles, seems like that is going to be the point when I'll be down 1qt. I also want to get another data point for the oil analysis and make sure everything is looking good.
Bet you that if you change to a thicker viscosity oil it will not use any oil . 0w20 is called for strictly to satisfy the cafe fuel economy regulations . I would Switch to a 0w40 synthetic for diesel engines
Who makes 0w40 low ash oil? I'm planning on sticking with 0w20 at least for the first few oil changes. The oil analysis company has my first sample, I'm hoping to get the data back from them Monday so I can post the oil change video.
Your motor will not last if you go that long. Lol... You should never go past 5k per oil change and that's full synthetic oil! Some folks tho, never learn that what they are is exactly what the auto maker wants them to do.. Aka Dumb azz's that Fuk their motor up so they have to buy new.. The old days they cared about ones pocket book size, nowadays they are all ran by their grandchildren and they want you to destroy the motor so they stay afloat.. Their grandfathers tho, they took care of their stuff to last unlike the younger gens.. Daddy always bought them new when it broke. They don't know what true appreciation of a Vehicle is...
First oil change has been done with the 0w20 Dexos D oil from the dealership. I'm waiting on the oil analysis before I pay that video. I might change later on..
Guess you guys know better than gm engineers. They designed the engine to use 0w20 oil. Don’t put in whatever oil you are used to using just because “it seems too thin”
They maybe have designed it to run on that thin of oil but it wouldn't surprise me if they have issues with crank bearings going out because of lack of oil like Fiat had with the 3.0 liter diesel using 5w 30 they switch to 5 w40
That is the speed limit for the road that I was on. It should have changed to 70 and then 75 during the trip. It is only available with the technology package and relies on the navigation data on the SD card for this info. Thanks for the question.
While towing my camper, the Cougar 27RES at 65 mph I was getting just over 13mpg. Most of the one trip that I took seemed to be into the wind. We might have one more camping trip this season... I'm trying to get my towing videos pulled together. Thanks for watching and the question.
Yep, I'll be taking the truck in for the set belt recall and I'm going to have it documented and see if they have any ideas... Thanks for watching and commenting.
So my truck has the new inline 6 3.0l Duramax engine not the V8. This engine has a variable displacement oil pump and at idle it is typically ~25psi and at upper RPMs, higher load it will get to around 60psi. Thanks for the question and for watching.
I have been told that it will get better and I'm hoping that is the case. I'll keep everyone posted with new videos. My oil analysis is back so the oil video should be ready tomorrow...
I'm not concerned as of yet since it is only 1 qt in ~ 4000 miles. I just wanted to keep everyone posted on how the truck is doing, if it were bad I would be taking it to the dealership for service. Keep watching I'll be doing updates every few weeks with special features in between.

You are always going to have burning oil you own a diesel especially with their compression it's double a gasoline engine so when your engine is cold the cylinders are not as tight this is also applies to very high performance engines that are gasoline that have high compression and you still need to work that motor in that's very good that you are towing with it you have to work it in with weight the transmission will thank you as well but yeah that d e f fluid is bullshit but the best of luck with the diesel man. I don't want to scare you but owning a diesel in Canada or America it can be hard and costly in your pocket with that stupid filter in the exhaust I hope this truck treats you well I used to own a Dodge Ram Cummings Diesel 2500 and they make amazing engines and that consumed oil as well but at least you didn't have an injector go on you melt a piston and Dodge couldn't even fix the diesel engine because they didn't even make it all the schlapp's there told me to bring it to Cummins anyways that's a whole new can of worms no more diesel for me man but this diesel looks good especially in a 1500 and an inline 6 that is amazing very reliable design anyways the best of luck to you man and love the truck I just bought myself a Chevy Silverado as well
The truck was in it's accessory mode, engine not running, that's why the engine light was on :). I did that so I could show the info pages and then check the oil level while it was cold.
The 2.7L will smoke all day like my old 3.5L ecoboost due to the fact that the leaking oil burning though the cheap plastic oil pan with the plastic drain plug that is removed with a pocket knife at any time.
It is supposed to be 70mph but in the morning it runs 80-85mph is spots and then down to 0mph as you get closer to the interchanges. I can do some other roads if you would like, it would make for a more complete review. Thanks again for the question. I hope I can help.
Chad Ivan it is all freeway. Interstate 90.
Completely normal for a new engine to burn oil. I wouldn’t worry about it. All new engines use low friction rings causing them to burn a little oil.
Thanks for making content on this cutting edge new truck! Can you do a TFL style highway loop video? Unloaded, speed limit, careful acceleration, hand calculated MPG? Thanks!
Will do. I'll see if I can get that done in the next week or so.
@@CJIEngineering
So I have a Airstream 23' trailer that weighs in at 6400 lbs wet.
How heavy is the camper and wha are the mpgs you getting while towing it?
The camper weighs 7,400lbs without any water in the tanks, that is how a tow it. We have been getting just over 13mpg driving 65mph in some pretty windy conditions. Thanks for the question.
Got one sitting in my driveway now. Would you still buy it today?
Try running amsoil and their filter, nice truck hate to see it with cheap oil
Break in takes a lot of oil. Normal done after forty thousand. And dexos isn’t special just use premium blue or any other brand.
It shouldn't burn any oil. Period.
Wholeness and balanced vibrations
Cool truck
Thank you
Will any DEF fluid work or does GM recommend a spefic brand?
I buy it at truck stops at the pump for 2.50 a gallon.
@@CJIEngineering ...thanks for the update! I live in northern Maine, five miles from the Canadian border, eh!
No DEF pump stations nearby and DEF from Wal Mart gives me no warm fuzzy feeling.
Not in the market to buy just yet...still in research mode.
We have it at the pump at a station here in Texas. That's where we get our DEF at work so it's where I'll get it for my personal truck
Lmao at the audio clip in. So unnatural is was fantastic!
Yep, sorry about that.... I kept saying thousands of miles and it's a pain to try and fit in new audio. Thanks for watching.
Its a compliment I thought. It was great lol
Could you imagine... changing oil at 35000 miles...
Subscribed, keep the videos coming
Thank you. Will do.
Amazing truck!!! Like the new Silverado with that diesel very nice.
Glad I got the oil changed on the Malibu Hybrid before strikes began. I can go 10000 miles with a single oil change, so I will make it through winter.
I would put 5w-30 in it
First oil change has been done with the 0w20 Dexos D oil from the dealership. I'm waiting on the oil analysis before I pay that video. I might change later on..
0w20 just seems like way to thin of oil for a diesel
@@spencerelsbury9110 ikr if it starts leaking oil it is just going to piss out
Guess you guys know better than gm engineers.
Is your truck 2WD or 4x4?
4x4 with the Z71 package so I have the 4x4 low available.
at 2:02 or so in your video, there's a number 45 in the upper left corner of the display - what does that number mean?
That is the speed limit for the road that I was on. It should have changed to 70 and then 75 during the trip. It is only available with the technology package and relies on the navigation data on the SD card for this info. Thanks for the question.
What kind of mileage are you getting while just towing
While towing my camper, the Cougar 27RES at 65 mph I was getting just over 13mpg. Most of the one trip that I took seemed to be into the wind. We might have one more camping trip this season... I'm trying to get my towing videos pulled together. Thanks for watching and the question.
My light just came on Smh 101 miles
What light came one, check engine, DEF or another one?
Do these have turbos
Yep, it has a single variable geometry turbo.
It shouldn’t be burning that much oil.
Yep, I'll be taking the truck in for the set belt recall and I'm going to have it documented and see if they have any ideas... Thanks for watching and commenting.
Can’t access any data or software, almost like you don’t own it or have options to change tire sizes. Ya pretty much can’t change anything......
Ok I know the duramax v8 has low oil pressure at idle. But is 10psi at idle normal for this engine?
So my truck has the new inline 6 3.0l Duramax engine not the V8. This engine has a variable displacement oil pump and at idle it is typically ~25psi and at upper RPMs, higher load it will get to around 60psi. Thanks for the question and for watching.
Yikes.... that's a lot of oil consumption for such a low mileage engine.
I have been told that it will get better and I'm hoping that is the case. I'll keep everyone posted with new videos. My oil analysis is back so the oil video should be ready tomorrow...
No comments on the fact it's burning oil???
new engines tend to burn oil as they break in
I'm not concerned as of yet since it is only 1 qt in ~ 4000 miles. I just wanted to keep everyone posted on how the truck is doing, if it were bad I would be taking it to the dealership for service. Keep watching I'll be doing updates every few weeks with special features in between.
Hi Chad, I don't think you're supposed to tow with a new vehicle. I realize new engines use some oil until the rings seat, but a quart after 3500 miles seems excessive. I work in Flint, so I'm familiar with Al Serra.
@@jeffpittel6926 Thanks for the comment, the owners manual states you need to wait 500 miles before towing and I did. I'm hoping the oil consumption goes down but we will see.... I'll be change the oil tonight and get it sent out for analysis to see if there is anything strange going on. I'm glad the engine was built in Flint and I'm hoping you guys build a lot of them. I really can't say enough good things about to powertain...
@@jeffpittel6926 for the first 500-1000 miles. At that point it's good to put a load on it to help seat the rings.

That motor is about as good as Cow Dung.... Its worse than a Toyota 3.0 Blow... This thing has way to much Blow-By!

Engine light on a 2020
The truck was in it's accessory mode, engine not running, that's why the engine light was on :). I did that so I could show the info pages and then check the oil level while it was cold.
