Re: mask reporting. All my covid positive friends would report great N95 mask wearing, except when eating, drinking, speaking, or when mildly inconvenienced indoors.
I spent a week off from reading COVID-19 science and updates. I am back at it now, and of course starting with the clinical update with Professor Racaniello and Dr. Griffin.
I am a 70 year old New Zealand woman, zero co-morbidities, not on any med's. I was diagnosed with myocarditis after first Pfizer dose, once an extensive battery of tests had ruled out any alternative causes for symptoms and sky high troponin levels. Condition has now resolved - I hope. In any event, troponin levels are back to normal. But I am left with health issues I did not have previously - fluid retention, elevated heart rate etc. I accept that myocarditis from Pfizer is rare but one does not always emerge as scot-free as I've heard medical authorities suggest repeatedly, and it's not just young males who get it. I have been unable to get fully vaccinated and am probably now more vulnerable to covid than I was pre-vaccine when I was in good health and with a robust immune system. (I have never been someone who falls prey to flu, colds etc.) I wish there was greater transparency on this issue at least in New Zealand.
I wish they could have given us a copy of the side effects, with resources to use for support to limit the side effects, if we had any, in the same communication we were given by computer to make the appointment. Instead we were given literally nothing. Historically, all vaccines have side effects and they, are well documented. I am boosted, but I took an H2 the night before, plenty of water, moved my arm as much as possible after the shot, drank more water, and had an H1 after the booster. My reaction was much milder than my first shot and it did not make my side effect worse. Not medical advice. Just what a few people with the same side effect tried, when one doctor gave the suggestion, to one member of the group.
Omicron infected our whole family. Everyone is vaccinated and always use mask and recently moved to N95s. We have shunned spending time in public. Our two boys, ages 5 and 9, go to schools with strict protocols, only one parent works part time out time of the house. We found out with at home test after the children came home with cold symptoms, Dad was knocked out for a week and Mom was later up for two days, with a lingering drainage. We aren't changing our practices and hoping the immunity bust keeps everyone health for some time.

The Danish study proved Omicron will spread the same to vaccinated as well as unvaccinated (with a booster only amounting to 10% less chance...and this is presumably for 2 months). The only difference the vaccine makes is in disease severity once you catch it (and the London outbreak data shows possibly only 15% of people are "naturally immune" to infection). 85% of the world will eventually catch COVID with or without the vaccine.

My kid's schools have had a fairly high number of infections during this last wave but, most surprising, all of the infections have been in vaccinated kids, teachers and their families.
That isn’t statistically that surprising if most people are vaccinated - so if you have 80% vaccinated you would expect most people with the virus are vaccinated because the non mucosal vaccines don’t prevent transmission enough to prevent transmission in a large indoor setting
@@tomorrow6 That does make sense but why did the 20% (ours is a highly vaccinated district) escape? I know of cases where they were playing together while the vaccinated was infectious but the unvaccinated kids never got it and we have a rule that all unvaccinated kids are tested 2x weekly so they aren't just asymptomatic.
@@carlitaticconi6655 despite what is claimed in this video , natural immunity so far has been much more effective - so if they caught it already they wouldn’t even show symptoms - it’s hard with anecdotes though - throughout the pandemic large groups of people have shown no symptoms or had no infection - perhaps the vax focuses the immune system on the wrong target - but that wouldn’t show the results seen in the macaque tests they talked about
@@tomorrow6 Indeed. The only hypothesis that came to mind was that perhaps the unvaccinated kids all got infected during these two years. Still, I can't quite explain the 5-11 year olds who really only got vaccinated recently.
@@tomorrow6 What you are refering to is called original antigenic sin. That is where the body develops antibodies to the first encounter (i.e. vaccine) and produces the same antibodies to fight the new encounter (i.e. Omicron) which has drastically escaped. If this were the case, it would mean unvaxed kids developed the "right" response (most likely T-Cells to Omicron) and most don't proceed to infection. And hence vaxxed kids had delayed T-Cell response because they thought the antibodies would do whole trick I guess.
The nasal spray looks like a good option for world wide distribution since it doesn't require refrigeration and a long shelf life. Hope our government puts money behind it, because as Dr. Griffin says, nobody's safe until everyone's safe.

The 1 in 5,000 number is in 16-17 year old males receiving their second dose of the mRNA vaccine. It generally resolves in a day or two on its own, and hasn't been seen in booster doses. Coronary and vascular complications for unvaccinated with COVID is much more prevalent, severe, and long lasting. The only data we don't have from this study is the difference between the risk to those vaccinated before being infected with SARS-CoV2, and that is because the study was designed to look at COVID patients out to 1 year post infection, and vaccination didn't start being widely available until 2021, so the data weren't there. Hopefully the researchers follow up with a second study looking at vaccinated versus unvaccinated, as that could have a big impact on if we recommend frequent boosting in an effort to prevent infection instead of just severe disease and whether or not we need to continue to consider mask mandates.
@@AMRosa10 The JAMA paper: “Myocarditis Cases Reported After mRNA-Based COVID-19 Vaccination in the US From December 2020 to August 2021” gives the risk as about 1 in 10,000 for that group (105.9 per million doses for Pfizer).
@@gribbler1695 There are multiple studies with different rates. I believe the 1 in 5,000 was with Moderna, but every study ends up giving us a range of results. Pfizer's incidence rate was lower than Moderna's, but both were significantly less than a COVID-19 infection.

Just wanted to add my opinion on the set backdrop; I find it distracting and unbalanced, especially when Dr. Griffin talks. It won’t stop me from getting this valuable info… I just may listen instead of watch.
I wear surgical mask for work for over 30 years. I wear KN95 when outside work. When Omicron came, the hospital only suggested us wearing N95 at work , if we want to. All surgical patients get checked 72 hours before,the staff can be tested on a voluntary basis if asymptotic . We answer a symptom tracker every day. We are required 2 vaccination plus booster.
Seeing Long Covid symptoms after vaccination could well be people who had asymptomatic infections concurrent with or shortly after vaccination before their immunity kicked in. When you think about the numbers of people getting Delta and Omicron wave infections, this must have occurred. This could also be the case for post-vaccination cardiomyopathy. It would be nice if some epidemiologist would run the numbers to see if this is likely.
Absolutely. Not to mention so many have been vaccinated in sketchy situations; people lined up together in small rooms, then told to wait with other people in small rooms. There should have been government guidelines to the environment that vaccination occurs, it would have been so easy to just have people wait in their cars and called to a curbside booth one at a time...
@@sanfransardine I'm sure they would've checked for this before blaming the long haul symptoms on the vaccine. The problem is that Asymptomatics lose antibodies (if any were made) in like 2 months. The T-Cells presumably last longer but it's not affordable for widespread use and most doctors wouldn't prescribe it.
Thank you again for such a great update! I agree with the mask study: we simply don't know when the people got infected. Very often, people get infected unmasked, not while wearing the mask, and then it really doesn't matter what mask the people wear the rest of the day. So this study might probably mostly reflect the behavior of the people, mixed with the type of mask. But the lack of difference between cloth and surgical masks, I agree, make it suspicious.
What is suspicious, that breathing through some media traps particles? You know it does, and because it does it makes complete sense to wear one, a simple proactive action. What sense does it make to cast doubt on the premise?
@@TheChipMcDonald don‘t get me wrong, I‘m all for masking for protection of yourself and others. But I know from my own measurements of filtration efficiency of various cloth masks depending on aerosol size - both DIY and commercially available - that they are very much inferior to surgical masks. So if available, I‘d always go for surgical mask + mask brace. But if not available, sure, I‘d go big time for a well-fitted cloth mask of 2 different materials that are known to filter best. I just think that we have to be careful: just because a study says what we want to hear, doesn‘t mean we should blindly use it as an argument for the cause. In the end that might hurt more than it helps. Yes, masks protect, but this study is maybe more of a hint than actual solid evidence because of the different behavior of people that is hard to correct for and the fact that most might have gotten infected while not masked at all (lunch etc..).
You meant 1 in *20* have long-term cardiovascular outcomes, not just 1 in 200, right? Figure 3 shows an excess burden for any cardiovascular outcome of 45.29 per 1,000 persons (exact number is on previous page), which is about 1 in 22. Excess burden for major adverse events (MACE) is ~1 in 43.
Vincent was about to say that in the human challenge Covid trial, Remdesivir made no difference to viral replication. So...why are some ERs giving it to some outpatients and above molnupiravir too? WHO recommend against Remdesivir. It also has a poor safety profile.
Here's my experience with home rapid antigen tests. Myself, my wife, and our 10, 9, and 5 year-olds all got sick at the same time in mid-january, so omicron. Wife and I are triple vaxxed. 10 and 9 year old double vaxxed. 5 year old had just got her second shot like 2 days before. All the kids tested positive on home rapid antigen tests within 24 hours of symptom offset, and tested negative after 4 days, despite having small symptoms (mild cough) that lingered for a week after that. Ok, that sort of squares with everything Vincent says about how it should work with vaccinated people. But the wife and I kept testing negative until day 5 of symptoms, and our symptoms had completely resolved by day 7, BUT we both kept testing positive (despite zero symptoms) for another week. What's up with that? We were less sick than the older kids, our symptoms resolved quicker, but according to rapid antigen tests we were contagious for far longer? Also, the long delay between symptom onset and testing positive for us vs the kids. Weird.
You are older that your kids. Young people have some advantage against SARS COV2 infection. May be they have higher mucoseal temperature. If(?) SARS COV2 better replicate at low tissue temperature ( that say at TWiV Nr 659 at min29 Christian Drosten) high mucoseal or/and body temperature have some antiviral effect in SARS COV2 infection (?)

Maybe you were "supposed to be asymptomatic". But the vaccine trained your immune system to repond very quick to the virus anyway...but later decided it didn't do much harm so it stopped reponding? Thus you rode out the "peak infection phase" without symptoms?
Please discuss improper vaccination techniques that our country and most other do, which have been linked to pericarditis,myocarditis as well as thrombophlebitis. Also please discuss why wont we test before vacinating to see if natural immunity has been achieved in the child. Thank you
Aspiration was rejected some decades ago because: it prolonged the procedure potentially caused pain increased the risk of needle-syringe disconnection.
@gribbler so no medical reason was provided. That makes no sense. That came from a study from one paper years ago from canada about it giving less pain to children. Not because it did not peovide any good or bad indication for the process of inejction.
That's correct, people should delay vaccination until they have recovered from the acute illness. But it can be deferred for up to 4 months, for most people.
It makes sense if we would have a cocktail of vaccines from wild type and Omicron specific for people who are getting their first dose of vaccination. (Not talking about the 3rd jab)
A city wide mask mandate was introduced in July 2020 during the first wave in Victoria, Australia. The damping effect was obvious in the daily case data. The effect was later confirmed by a research organisation. I don't have the details at hand but it does add wait to the claim that masks work, and that they work better when everyone is wearing them.
That was the most rubbish research ever - they looked at self selected posed photos in the local city newspaper 📰 NSW had similar reductions with voluntary masks or no masks
We decided to vacation via a flight in airport, in process 10 hrs going, 15 hr back. Mask adherence high. Only time it was off for 3 or us was to drink or eat( then we all were distanced from one another) I wore a KN 95. I tested neg , 4 days after home. My hubby tested pos at day 3.( hrs 65) our daughter asymptomatic ( unable to get a test, in her 30’s). Both husband and daughter wore basic filtered OTC mask. Was it age, mask, what? Virus came to our house . We r all vaccines and boosted. I am not ready to be in crowds w/o masking. I can’t control if I get this, I can do what I can thru behavior. Am I becoming frustrated?( yrs), has this caused friend and family division. Absolutely. We all have a an effect on those we love.

There’s a new US study that shows a higher incidence of myocarditis following vaccines. Particularly in younger males. And 13% don’t quickly resolve. And a UK study by Patone et revised in Dec with a break down of age and sex found males under 40 were consistently at increased risk of myocarditis from certain vax.
Have you read the 2020 study in which they did cardiac MRIs on 100 patients in Germany after Covid? The majority of patients, even those with mild cases, had signs of cardiomyopathy.

Why are we telling people to get their vaccine after they've gotten covid? Of all the questions I can help pts with, that's the hardest one to answer that they believe
People can (and do) catch repeated COVID-19 infections, and the second or third illness episodes can be much worse. Getting immunized against COVID-19 improves one’s odds against the disease, regardless of whether it’s one’s first episode of COVID-19 illness or a subsequent episode.
The problem is multifaceted. We are simultaneously saying that an omicron based vaccine is no better than the regular vaccine but also that after getting covid and having natural immunity you need the vaccine to be better covered... That cannot work one way but not the other without reinforcing people's fear that the government, or somebody is up to something.
I appreciate Dr. Griffin, having already cared for patients in two hospitals, has come to the studio to help inform the public.

It’s also the best bet at reducing transmission by attacking the virus at the mucosal level in the nose and mouth

The 1 in 5,000 number is in 16-17 year old males receiving their second dose of the mRNA vaccine. It generally resolves in a day or two on its own, and hasn't been seen in booster doses.
Coronary and vascular complications for unvaccinated with COVID is much more prevalent, severe, and long lasting.
The only data we don't have from this study is the difference between the risk to those vaccinated before being infected with SARS-CoV2, and that is because the study was designed to look at COVID patients out to 1 year post infection, and vaccination didn't start being widely available until 2021, so the data weren't there. Hopefully the researchers follow up with a second study looking at vaccinated versus unvaccinated, as that could have a big impact on if we recommend frequent boosting in an effort to prevent infection instead of just severe disease and whether or not we need to continue to consider mask mandates.
@@AMRosa10 The JAMA paper: “Myocarditis Cases Reported After mRNA-Based COVID-19 Vaccination in the US From December 2020 to August 2021” gives the risk as about 1 in 10,000 for that group (105.9 per million doses for Pfizer).
@@gribbler1695 There are multiple studies with different rates. I believe the 1 in 5,000 was with Moderna, but every study ends up giving us a range of results. Pfizer's incidence rate was lower than Moderna's, but both were significantly less than a COVID-19 infection.

I wear surgical mask for work for over 30 years. I wear KN95 when outside work. When Omicron came, the hospital only suggested us wearing N95 at work , if we want to. All surgical patients get checked 72 hours before,the staff can be tested on a voluntary basis if asymptotic . We answer a symptom tracker every day.
We are required 2 vaccination plus booster.
Seeing Long Covid symptoms after vaccination could well be people who had asymptomatic infections concurrent with or shortly after vaccination before their immunity kicked in. When you think about the numbers of people getting Delta and Omicron wave infections, this must have occurred. This could also be the case for post-vaccination cardiomyopathy. It would be nice if some epidemiologist would run the numbers to see if this is likely.
You can check for nucleocapsid antibodies to see if they had an unrecognized real infection vs. just vaccination.
Absolutely. Not to mention so many have been vaccinated in sketchy situations; people lined up together in small rooms, then told to wait with other people in small rooms. There should have been government guidelines to the environment that vaccination occurs, it would have been so easy to just have people wait in their cars and called to a curbside booth one at a time...

The T-Cells presumably last longer but it's not affordable for widespread use and most doctors wouldn't prescribe it.
Thank you again for such a great update! I agree with the mask study: we simply don't know when the people got infected. Very often, people get infected unmasked, not while wearing the mask, and then it really doesn't matter what mask the people wear the rest of the day. So this study might probably mostly reflect the behavior of the people, mixed with the type of mask. But the lack of difference between cloth and surgical masks, I agree, make it suspicious.
What is suspicious, that breathing through some media traps particles? You know it does, and because it does it makes complete sense to wear one, a simple proactive action. What sense does it make to cast doubt on the premise?
@@TheChipMcDonald don‘t get me wrong, I‘m all for masking for protection of yourself and others. But I know from my own measurements of filtration efficiency of various cloth masks depending on aerosol size - both DIY and commercially available - that they are very much inferior to surgical masks. So if available, I‘d always go for surgical mask + mask brace. But if not available, sure, I‘d go big time for a well-fitted cloth mask of 2 different materials that are known to filter best. I just think that we have to be careful: just because a study says what we want to hear, doesn‘t mean we should blindly use it as an argument for the cause. In the end that might hurt more than it helps. Yes, masks protect, but this study is maybe more of a hint than actual solid evidence because of the different behavior of people that is hard to correct for and the fact that most might have gotten infected while not masked at all (lunch etc..).
You meant 1 in *20* have long-term cardiovascular outcomes, not just 1 in 200, right? Figure 3 shows an excess burden for any cardiovascular outcome of 45.29 per 1,000 persons (exact number is on previous page), which is about 1 in 22. Excess burden for major adverse events (MACE) is ~1 in 43.

Vincent was about to say that in the human challenge Covid trial, Remdesivir made no difference to viral replication. So...why are some ERs giving it to some outpatients and above molnupiravir too? WHO recommend against Remdesivir. It also has a poor safety profile.

Here's my experience with home rapid antigen tests.
Myself, my wife, and our 10, 9, and 5 year-olds all got sick at the same time in mid-january, so omicron. Wife and I are triple vaxxed. 10 and 9 year old double vaxxed. 5 year old had just got her second shot like 2 days before.
All the kids tested positive on home rapid antigen tests within 24 hours of symptom offset, and tested negative after 4 days, despite having small symptoms (mild cough) that lingered for a week after that. Ok, that sort of squares with everything Vincent says about how it should work with vaccinated people.
But the wife and I kept testing negative until day 5 of symptoms, and our symptoms had completely resolved by day 7, BUT we both kept testing positive (despite zero symptoms) for another week. What's up with that? We were less sick than the older kids, our symptoms resolved quicker, but according to rapid antigen tests we were contagious for far longer? Also, the long delay between symptom onset and testing positive for us vs the kids.

That's correct, people should delay vaccination until they have recovered from the acute illness. But it can be deferred for up to 4 months, for most people.

It makes sense if we would have a cocktail of vaccines from wild type and Omicron specific for people who are getting their first dose of vaccination.

A city wide mask mandate was introduced in July 2020 during the first wave in Victoria, Australia. The damping effect was obvious in the daily case data. The effect was later confirmed by a research organisation. I don't have the details at hand but it does add wait to the claim that masks work, and that they work better when everyone is wearing them.
That was the most rubbish research ever - they looked at self selected posed photos in the local city newspaper 📰 NSW had similar reductions with voluntary masks or no masks

We decided to vacation via a flight in airport, in process 10 hrs going, 15 hr back. Mask adherence high. Only time it was off for 3 or us was to drink or eat( then we all were distanced from one another)
I wore a KN 95. I tested neg , 4 days after home.
My hubby tested pos at day 3.( hrs 65) our daughter asymptomatic ( unable to get a test, in her 30’s). Both husband and daughter wore basic filtered OTC mask.

Virus came to our house . We r all vaccines and boosted.
I am not ready to be in crowds w/o masking.
I can’t control if I get this, I can do what I can thru behavior.

If you don't have symptoms of for example influenza you're not an influenza case even though you test positive for the influenza virus
Since those without symptoms can be infectious, it makes sense to identify them and take preventive actions.

There’s a new US study that shows a higher incidence of myocarditis following vaccines. Particularly in younger males. And 13% don’t quickly resolve.
And a UK study by Patone et revised in Dec with a break down of age and sex found males under 40 were consistently at increased risk of myocarditis from certain vax.
Have you read the 2020 study in which they did cardiac MRIs on 100 patients in Germany after Covid? The majority of patients, even those with mild cases, had signs of cardiomyopathy.

People can (and do) catch repeated COVID-19 infections, and the second or third illness episodes can be much worse. Getting immunized against COVID-19 improves one’s odds against the disease, regardless of whether it’s one’s first episode of COVID-19 illness or a subsequent episode.
Because no one has done the study (proving) that is all you need.
The problem is multifaceted. We are simultaneously saying that an omicron based vaccine is no better than the regular vaccine but also that after getting covid and having natural immunity you need the vaccine to be better covered... That cannot work one way but not the other without reinforcing people's fear that the government, or somebody is up to something.
I think for some people the masks just don't fit their whole face very well, or they have a long nose that just doesn't get under the mask.
