I’m glad you covered the Hula Grub. I thought I was the only one using it 😄. I use it (or least think of it) as a crawfish imitation. It’ll catch just about anything……. Thank you Matt!!! 👍🎣
When I was first introduced to this lure it was in Arkansas and it was the Chompers Hula Grub. This was at least 15 yrs ago. It soon became my favorite bait and used it on lakes and rivers. I still have gotten away from this, but still have them in my boats for days when the fishing gets tough. I had not though much about dragging in on a football head but will try this approach this year.
Dragging a football head and Hula Grub on Erie. Hot tactic on Erie in the 80's, 90's and early 00's. I still carry a bunch. You did it again Matt. Thanks.
There are so many baits I stop using for no reason - that is one of them, then it seems like you post a video about them and I start using them again. Thanks again Matt.
Before Hula Grubs we had the Bobby Garland Spider Jigs. Same idea buy they were two piece instead of one. You slid the plastic skirt onto the shank of the jighead and then the double tail grub.
My dad's side of the family lived in Plymouth Indiana for a few decades. Chase Truck Leasing might sound familiar, too. That is pretty cool that you used to fish around there!
Crazy you mention the Hula Grug... I remember going to a cabin in Northern MN and there was a BASS magazine with the hula grub featured on the cover, I feel in love with bass fishing after that point.
What a small world it is, I too spent a LOT of time on Lawrence lake growing up, it's where my grandpa taught me to fish and still to this day over 40 years ago I caught my pb bass of 6 lbs. right across the bridge in the pads on Meyers lake. My grandparents owned the brown and limestone 2 story just to the right of the boat ramp ( looking at the lake from the ramp), and later built the house between the ramp and said house. Sooo many awesome memories of Lawrence lake! Keep up the great content!
Modernized approach: lose the jig head. Try a free rig! Use your favorite Fusion 19 hook and the appropriate weight size for the depth (e.g. 1/4oz or 3/8oz). The bait has such a perfect hover/fall each time you pop it. The hula part acts like a parachute. The sinker brings the bait down with speed, then when the sinker hits the bottom -- poof the bait decelerates and slowly hovers down. Great triggering action. You can also slide a bobber stop up your line if the weight is separating too much for your liking. It depends how fast you want to fish it and whether you're target fishing (e.g., docks) or covering water. Try it!
They're an absolute must have in New Hampshire and have been for a long time. I remember fishing a tournament years ago where everyone was fishing them and literally about nothing else. The old Northern Bass Supple used to have a huge selection of the Yamamoto colors, and they sold like crazy. I was able to get a few of those old school packs you showed, and I got a few really good smallmouth on them last year with them. I'll always have them in the boat!
Hey Matt, I been fishing Hula type grub lures for over 25 years now, and a few years back I started cutting them up and mix matching the skirt and grub parts by heat welding them together with a candle, I learned that a brown skirt with the green pumpkin twin tail combo is a killer for largemouth & spotted bass, I mostly use Arkie style and Round Ball weedless jig heads 1/4 & 3/8 size , they work really good when cut down and used on finesse jigs too, I have caught many fish on this lure !!!
Used it 5 years ago when I was just getting into bass fishing again. It definitely produces. It's a lot like the structure bug, in that it's very versatile. Used it with a biffel head on sandy or gravel bottom.
Thanks for going back and reviewing the hula-grub!!👊🏻 Someone gave me a few and had no idea how to fish it but now I do!!! My first bassboat was that Sea Nymph Bass Attacker. Had a 9.9 hp no electronics but I had fun fishing out of it. I didn't fish any tournaments at that time. Stay Safe & God Bless!!!!
I have my favorite colors on these which you came close to for casting and pitching. One I picked up on a whim from a clearance bin was smoke with red and black flake. OMG! This is an outstanding color for swimming on a 1/4 oz guppy head.
Thats a bait that brings back some great memories, I once had a birds nest in my reel and it took what seemed forever to get out, once I did I went to reel the bait back in and a fish still had it for I dont know how long but I made the cast to the right side of the boat when I reeled it in it was completely on the other side of the boat. Im like you, great memories with that bait, gotta get back to using them! By the way that fish was a 5.8lb largemouth
A couple years ago, a man cast his bait and lost his grip. I offered him a spare pole, but he refused. I think he was afraid of losing it, too. An hour later, his little boy snagged something. He reels it in, and there are two trout and a fishing line on the two-hook rig. Starts pulling on the snagged line, and here comes the dad’s pole. So they separate the tangle and reel in the dad’s line, and there’s two more trout. So the kid got four trout and his dad’s lost fishing pole on a single cast.
I was one of the guys who asked about the spided grub thumbnail. Appreciate you circling back to it. I also remember the magazine era. Bassmaster, In-Fisherman and Fishing Facts early on, later FLW... those were the resources of the day. Good stuff. Did you talk about tackle? ....doh. finesse jig gear I suppose? Spinning?
Yes! Was throwing the single tail GYB Hula Grub last year and did well. I think I was throwing it on a Ned rig head; exposed hook. Clear color with some red and silver flakes.
Gosh, I used to catch a lot of fish on those. Root Beer w/ green flake on a flat bottom football jig that I used to get from Russ Bassdozer old website. Slowly drag it until I hit a chunk rock and POP it off and get ready for a strike. They make a good flippin' bait as well. Thanks for the reminder....I"ll have to start using them more. Chompers makes them too and with a pretty strong garlic scent, if I remember correctly. Cheaper than GYB too.
I had one bait shop. It was called cricket hall. All the Guntersville fisherman would hang out there. We used to go in there as kids and just listen to them talk fishing. I got quite an education
Back about the same on time on Wawasee in northern Indiana, if you weren't throwing a "Yami" you didn't take home a check! Bite Me Tackle has a specific head for the hula grub and is the style everyone used... still have a bunch of those old bags, and we used lots of the single tails as well
About 5-6 years ago outlet bait and tackle had a bunch of Yamamoto packs ! For cheap 2-3 bucks ! I got about 40 packs on my pegboard !! They are killer !! Love em !!
Definitely one of my confidence baits I like to rig them with a football head with a screw lock to keep it weedless . Sometimes I will also slit the bottom side a little like how some swim baits are .thanks for sharing Matt
Man.... 1993 or 1994 was when i first learned about them, great baits. I'll have to dig through my stuff pretty sure i still have some from back then. My son and I literally just picked up a bunch of Chompers hula grubs at Bass Pro earlier today. We’ve had decent luck fishing them on a shaky head or Texas rigged in local ponds and small lakes. I also just picked up a bunch of your guppy heads from TW. Gonna mate them up with some 2.8 keitechs and do some cold water finesse fishing in the next couple weeks. Matt, I dident know you new that area! I Grew up in a small town North of there called North Liberty you have probably heard of Potato Creek State park that was my playground, very cool.
I don’t catch a lot of fish most of the time, but the first time I used a hula grub I caught 5 largemouth in 40 minutes, fishing in Downtown Chicago last November. Can’t wait to bring it out again.
Haha I wondered about this, I was like I love the hula grub lol and it does work everywhere. It's a classic bait, and I was like he must of just forgot and it happens to all of us. Your story at that age is similar to mine, spinnerbaits were my thing and my soft plastics were berkley power worm and a yamamoto hula grub. I just replenished mine and I have never quit using them. Jig and pork some other classics I used. Thanks for sharing your story 👍
I love hula grubs- just started throwing them this season- in other words, a couple weeks ago- but they rock. I have a blister pack of skirts made by Reins that you can slip on any hook and fish with any plastic- but if you pair it with a double tail grub- you've got a traditional hula grub. They're available at the Hook-up Tackle- were anyway, may be sold out now. I pair them with craws sometimes- any creature bait you want to add some bulk and secondary action to- they work great.
I really enjoyed this video! Believe it or not I used to use this bait on a under spin with a small blade and got laughed at for setting it up that way.. I would make long cast in shallow water and burn it back to the kayak and alot of the time it got bit and changed my day! Great video thanks for sharing Matt! 👍🎣
Pretty much every tourney in Cali is loaded with hard core hula grubbers. They flat out work. My all time favorite Yamamoto color is green pumpkin purple and copper.
I got a couple of those from an estate sale. I fish off a dock on the Pend Orielle river with lots of weed out to the drop off. Wondering the best way to rig them up and fish them.
I use tbe hula grub and zestail or a double tail grub on a 1/2 jighead for saltwater fishing also and it slays non-stop, it must look like a squid or crab maybe. Thanks Matt love the tips
I was actually looking to buy some of these today. I’ve always thought they looked stupid but I saw it rigged and it clicked to me a bit. Though my little rivers don’t have weed lines but I’m sure it works on Rocky bottoms
haha, soo ok I wasn’t the only one thing seeing the thumbnail pic in the prev vid, and wondering why you didn’t include it. Lol. Glad you did this one dedicated t ok one vid. 🙂. Ive been using the hula grub on FB head on Lanier in winter for few yrs. great winter bait. Thanks Matt!!
I found the Hula Grubs in one store, Wacky Worm in Gilbert PA. The late 80s or early 90s. Lou ( the owner) Hey Mike and Don try these Grubs. We never looked back. Thank you bringing back a great memory 🙏☮️❤️😎
I've seen these but i never have thought they would be a great bait, there's a lot of baits I've bought that don't work for me, but since you recommend them I'll give them a try, this would be great on Guntersville, those fish love ribbon tails & bright green!
If you are in Az and don’t have one tied on at all times of the year you are missing out. It is a standard out here always has been. On a jig head. T-rig, hell you can drop shot, free rig and Carolina rig em.. they always produce. And a heck of a good flip/pitch bait too..
I discovered these a few years ago. It has produced for me for shallow water smallies in the river on football jigs. I got my 8 year-old into using these last year. My only issue is that the Yamamoto grubs are not very durable and don't get many fish per bait.
I've caught a lot of fish working them pretty aggressive. I think they're a good bluegill imitator, fishing them kind of aggressive with some small rod snaps like a little soft jerk bait or swim jig. As you said, they just kind of fell by the wayside for me as I had success with new things. I think it's time to put some back in the bag :)
Hey Mr Stefan when I started getting serious about bass fishing the plastics I first started using yamomoto single tail grubs , hula grub , and a tube bait. hey Mr Stefan check out the hula grub jigheads that yamomoto has he uses owner hooks but I have a whole bunch of the Matt Stefan guppy heads and I never thought of swimming the hula grub good video I agree with you how the hula grub is a forgotten bait .Mr Stefan I can't tell you how many bass I caught on the single tail grub, hula grub, Gary's crawfish bait's, thousands and thousands of bass over the years. Thanks for your great videos and the content is suberb, awesome, outstanding, key information all the time. God bless you and your family your pal fisherman Mike. Ps tell your son great job showing us the lures in the last video.
I just got into throwing these and duuude let me tell you I cannot wait till I can get out more because I really have high hopes for this bait, hoping it'll be a secret weapon when all else fails.
I have used the spider grub before the Gary Yamamoto produced them. It was called the Triple S grub. It dominated the tournament trailer when the bite was tough. I won a 80 boat series my first year fishing this bait 80% of the time. Best color hands down in the 297. I have fished them all. The Watermelon Red is great in the spring but if you could only have 1, 297 is THE one. Fished on a shakey headis best.
Hey Matt I'm curious have you ever fished the live target bait ball spinner rig it's basically a miniature Alabama rig with one hook in it they built it on a spinnerbait frame I've never heard any pros talk about it I use them here in Kansas because of our state laws you can't use traditional Alabama rigs and I catch a lot of fish on them just curious if you had ever tried the bait or heard any scuttlebutt about the bait thanks boss.
@@MattStefanFishing do I would love to see a video or just here your thoughts on it . It's a neat bait and an easy way to learn to fish a A rig. The half oz large frame is my favorite
Never threw a Hulu Grub. I wonder how they’d work on a swinging jig head? Or on a buzz bait? I love experimenting w/diff combinations of trailers on varying types of lures. Another one I gotta try. Help! 🎣
That literally sounds like the boat my buddy just bought and the thing is awesome I don't have one yet but that's exactly what I'm looking for for the waters we fish here in pa it's perfect
😮 Im definitely gonna pick up some Hula Grubs. I fish at highly pressured areas and Im all about doing or fishing baits people are not fishing much anymore. I loke giving the fish an element of surprise. Lol
I’m glad you covered the Hula Grub. I thought I was the only one using it 😄. I use it (or least think of it) as a crawfish imitation. It’ll catch just about anything……. Thank you Matt!!! 👍🎣

I keep Chompers brand hula grubs in my tackle bag at all times. Especially in the summer.
thanks for sharing!
Thanks for the info
Great video bro , love that bait too , it crushes the bass too
Yes it does!
Chompers and Arkie hoola grubs are my go-to!

I graduated from Culver Military Academy. Had some good times on Lake Maxinkuckee
Awesome! I always thought it would be super cool to go there!
Great video, just bought a bunch of these for the first time, didn't get them yet, on backorder. Are these solid or hollow body?

haha! still growing with support from viewers like you! thanks!
Ps tell your son great job showing us the lures in the last video.
will do thanks for sharing!
GY Cowboys are great on a football jighead as well
Nice!
I just got into throwing these and duuude let me tell you I cannot wait till I can get out more because I really have high hopes for this bait, hoping it'll be a secret weapon when all else fails.
they are great!
Fished on a shakey headis best.
great story!
Hey Matt I'm curious have you ever fished the live target bait ball spinner rig it's basically a miniature Alabama rig with one hook in it they built it on a spinnerbait frame I've never heard any pros talk about it I use them here in Kansas because of our state laws you can't use traditional Alabama rigs and I catch a lot of fish on them just curious if you had ever tried the bait or heard any scuttlebutt about the bait thanks boss.
never heard of it. ill check it out
@@MattStefanFishing do I would love to see a video or just here your thoughts on it . It's a neat bait and an easy way to learn to fish a A rig. The half oz large frame is my favorite
Been using hulu grubs probably close to 25 years and still one of my go to plastics.
Cinnamon purple is the only one I buy anymore 👍
anything cinnamon i have found to be great haha
Never threw a Hulu Grub. I wonder how they’d work on a swinging jig head? Or on a buzz bait? I love experimenting w/diff combinations of trailers on varying types of lures. Another one I gotta try. Help! 🎣
it was basically meant for a swing head haha
Such a confidence bait for me getting back into fishing years ago. Texas rigged, and swimming for the win.
Nice!
Football head works better in oysters but I use the shaky head screw on really oyster / weed less if you will Good stuff
thanks for sharing!
Great video
thanks!
I like the 4 on a hair jig as a trailer an mop through Milford post spawn
sounds good!
I still to this day win local tournaments with this bait. Great vid!
its a great bait!
That literally sounds like the boat my buddy just bought and the thing is awesome I don't have one yet but that's exactly what I'm looking for for the waters we fish here in pa it's perfect
Very cool
I like the Arkie version use it on gravel n rock n river
nice!
😮 Im definitely gonna pick up some Hula Grubs. I fish at highly pressured areas and Im all about doing or fishing baits people are not fishing much anymore. I loke giving the fish an element of surprise. Lol
