This video reminded me of a bait they used to have in the old havoc line. It was the backslide from berkley and it really did flutter backwards on the fall. No modifications needed. Just Texas rig it weightless. I wish they still made it.
The Amazing Flying Lure…LoL! I think I still have the kit from when I was a kid. I have been rigging the Fat Ika in a similar fashion. I will definitely look to give this a try with some sweet beavers and a nail weight. As always thanks for the tips!
I still have one of the flying lures a Junebug and your absolutely right it was awesome how it would glide away from you,I would always use it on bedded bass because you could keep it right in front of the bass!
I rig the fat ika backwards and nail weight a Texas rigged senko to get similar results. I never thought to try it with a creature bait. Thanks for the tip!
Randy basically only talks about the baits that sponsor him, and then also older stuff that he swears by and you can’t get anymore. Also I’m a braid to leader addict so I disagree with him on like every setup he uses lol I still enjoy and learn from his vids tho
Most of the docks around here are the black plastic floats under the docks. That looks like it would be an awesome idea to use around them. Thank you for sharing!
Decoy makes a weighted hook where you can slide the weight wherever you want. Works great for this technique. There are some plastics that work great for this. The deps bull slender or bull slide and the OSP do live stick fat
@@MattStefanFishing There is the decoy back switcher and the makisasu hook, hard to find but they work. I’ll have to give the nail weight a try sometime.
Funny that you actually gave this a name, I started fishing with this the exact same way with the same bait. Great results especially with largemouth though works on both.
Matt I put bass fishing on the back burner for cat fishing. You have inspired me to start up bass fishing again. You are educational and a real down to earth person. Thanks for the videos I have watched everyday now for a month they are very enjoyable to watch, and learn from.
Another Great One Matt! I can see why you would keep this one a secret. Docks are getting to be the only shoreline cover in many lakes now, and growing in numbers!
This is a very deadly technique Matt thanks for sharing! You and Gary Dobbins are the only pros I have ever heard talk about this technique. His bait of choice is a Yamamoto Fat Ika rigged backwards on a EWG 3/0 Super Line Hook 🤫
I've done that with a stick bait, to make it fall into or under a grass matt edge, worked very well, kind of forgot about that technique, good reminder, thank you.
Really cool outside of the box thinking. I'd love to see some underwater footage but it totally makes sense and could have used something like this countless times.
I’ve discovered that a 1/8 oz EWG weighted hook like a fusion works well because the weight is centered on the hook better and also the screw lock holds the end well. Glides well!
Hey Mr Stefan good one I was checking out a few years ago the backwards Texas rigging but a little different set up I like it awesome some of the reading I've done on smallmouth bass fishing they seem to like baits that glide. Thanks for all the great info God bless you and your family your pal fisherman Mike.
I was experimenting with this exact setup last summer. I could get it to glide a good 5 + feet oftentimes. Definitely nice gliding around thick trees that go all the way to the water surface
Yessss that one ☝️ bait i got , exactly same colors , will try it next spring , it’s the end off fishing season for me and the beginning of my cross country skiing season, just waiting for more snow ❄️. I will continue to follow you and your valuable tips and get my hands on anything from max scent where i could find it .
I use this for tullies and docks when I need it to go under a heavy or hard cover. Worked for years! As a matter if fact, we're in the process of designing a bait just for this purpose.
I have a box full of flying lures still. Mostly forgot about them. I once caught a five pounder under a dock as it swam perfect and bam. I am going to try this! We should all try if it works out we can call it the Matt Stefan glider technique! Thanks Matt
I have been experimenting on this for couple seasons now using beaver style and tube baits. Great stuff will trying your method for sure. Thank you and keep up the great videos
This is still one of my favorite techniques around cover and overhanging tree limbs. I really like some of the Japanese backslide baits like the older Jackall cover craw, the OSP Dolive Shot, and the Deps Bullslide. The Jackall Fivoss also looks promising, but I don’t have any experience with it yet.
The gliding bait idea is a really good one I do it with a senko, by Texas rigging it weightless and then putting a nail weight at the bottom end of the Cinco when you flip it at the dock it will glide several feet underneath the dock it just keeps going straight back.
I’ll try this skipping way back in willows,I use a nail weight in a stick worm, also a stick bait as a top water ,great tip ,watch fish the moment live tonight ,lake map breakdowns ,leaning to read the water by the seasons
First time I throw a flying lure to lay down, I watch it fly out of view , pump it once. BAM! 6lber grabs lure as it dives back in under limb. Fight was on! Had to be 25yrs ago or more, picture is still vivid in my mind. Nice to see idea come back around. Why not design a universal jig head that helps plastics dive/fly same directions as cast. Maybe a couple Berkley plastics designed with all features needed for best performance. Do it! Do it! Do it! Just sayin! Keep on!
When I started tournament fishing years ago, I was always trying “stuff” like this way outside of the box. Didn’t have the beaver back then and was trying to make tubes do that in nasty log jams with very few holes to get a bait in. Good stuff brother 👍🏼
Hey Matt ...really surprised that you let this "gliding" technique out of the bag, but is a technique that can be more generally applied. .... for instance ....with a jig! ....not necessarily a backwards glider. but it's the gliding that makes it deadly! Not the prettiest as far as appendages and kickers, but using a chuck type trailer gives the jig an irresistible gliding motion. ... short 5/16 oz finesse jig with a tiny Zoom chunk was my go to, and would make 100's in a year time, and was all that I threw as far as jigs most of the year.
The fat ika is my go to backglide bait. The jdm brands are all about the flat gliding baits. Osp, deps, the bull flat, sakamata Shad, cover scat. Many baits specifically designed for what you are trying to achieve. Have you tried free rigging?
Wow the flying lure what’s next helicopter lure I remember these gimmicks im40 years old they where the good old days man great idea here Matt thanks dude have a happy Thanksgiving
Awesome tip on that Glidder!!!!!👊🏻 Can't wait to get out and try it!!! Going to Fla in January maybe I will have a chance to try it down there!! Stay Safe & God Bless!!!
Killer technique!!! I use my D Bombs the same way. Different hook & different weight. I've tried using a really light weight like a finishing nail and it works better. I always put scent on the bait before I cast. I'm not wanting to attract them, it doesn't work that way. I use it to mask the smell of human or anything that gives me away. Thank you for sharing
I still have my Flying Lure Kit and I thought it was a brilliant idea way back then and had success around the docks. Now I’m gonna did it out from my attic, and I just placed an order of several packages of nail weights 😁👍 another great tip Matt, Thanks 🙏 and Happy Thanksgiving 🦃 to you and your family 🙏
Love Berkley baits. I wish they all smelled liked the green pumpkin color the clear baits with glitter all smell like rubber lol i never understood that even tho i know there scented also
Matt, ive seen similar backwards rigged craws used as punching baits, with the punch weight attached to the hook gap. I thought it was a pretty dope idea cause it streamlines the presentation and the weight always hits the matt pointy end first. I haven’t fished it extensively, but i think it gets through cover with slightly less weight and should give you a little slower fall, but most importantly the weight isn’t there to bust the fish’s mouth open. Would love to hear your thoughts
Ive used them and have mixed feels. I like that the weight doesnt push through the fishes mouth but i also feel like its easier for the fish to shake the hook because the heavy punch weight is plling the hook backwards. But I have caught fish doing it.
@@MattStefanFishing i also imagine it’s harder for them to pick the bait up to get the hook in their mouth the right way, the weight prevents them from just mouthing the plastic
Other baits that great for your gliding trick Matt, Jackall cover craw, Gary Yamamoto Ika and are rigged the same way you’ve shown. How light was that nail weight that you put in your bait for the glider?
Do you have any experience with the Berkeley snap jig ? Deps makes the bull flat it’s bluegill shaped and it will glide if you put it on a light swim bait hook. Another great tip thank you
Matt thanks, got a question One of my sons bought me 5 bags of lizards with different colors never used them. What weight size and hook and do I use a swivel can you help ?
I would fish it with a 1/4 to 1/2 oz bullet weight and a 4/0 EWG hook. The other way i like to fish lizards is with a carolina rig. Use a 1/2 oz - 1 oz weight above a swivel. then tie about a 3 ft leader to the same EWG hook and lizard.
Simple but effective. I Like it.
Thanks!
Love the way you think. I hope Berkley is paying attention to you. Greatly appreciate you. Thank you Matt.
I appreciate that!

Thank for the tip have a happy turkey day my question what is a good size jig for winter
I stick with a standard 1/2 oz size
It has the added benefit of the absence of a weight at the line end - less chance of a hard weight blowing the mouth of the fish open on the hookset.
yep!
It’s like that old school flying lure from tv info mercials

in a way yes, but thats more to make a neko style texas rig worm weedless
