- Today I'm in the studio giving tips on and demonstrating - How to simplify and spice up your oil painting! I will use a Plein Air study as a starting point to work from.
Painting on clear primed Belgian linen, I will set out to achieve the biggest visual affects, with the least amount of work!

Greetings, Richard - I liked the smaller study already, now that homestead has certainly become famous. - This painting is excellent. Great colours, lots of depth and enough detail to capture the surroundings. Plus the fantastic effect is enhanced by the Belgian linen you've used, and the implied road in the foreground gives a wonderful sense of space. All in all, the use of other colours has also created a very appealing mood. In a museum, I would certainly pause longer in front of the painting and daydream. - Thank you, Richard, and have a nice week.

Richards, I do hope you know how helpful you are to less able artists like myself, this was a particularly instructive vid but they are all learning opportunities for me. I have always loved art. A couple years ago I started to take classes, first in watercolor and then drawing. Last month I decided to take a leap into oil painting . I have gained so much more appreciation for all mediums. Your technique and color choices brought me so much joy as I could see the piece come together.

Gidday my friend, love this one mate. Isn't it amazing how a minimalist approach can achieve great impact if done correctly. Your techniques should be taught to all who are starting out or indeed have already been painting for a while. So much to learn about tone, colour, abstraction and application to produce form and atmosphere. Wish I had seen your work decades ago when I gave up because it was all too hard and confusing. My learning has been about seeing, interpreting, colour mixing, highlights and shadows, depth and tone, being bold and experimenting and much more. It's about enjoying and living the experience. Richard, this was very instructional and a terrific outcome. Very minimal, but still rich.
The sky really works well in this one and captures that "moment" that you talk about
so much. The far right deep range is beautiful and anchors the whole look.
Especially like the cobalt bowl that flows down the far right ridgeline. Really
impressed by the suggestive rendering of the homestead. Another knockout.
Thank you for teaching us about forbearance in minimalistic style!

Hello Richard, you have been able to capture the atmosphere of this early morning beautifully while everything is calm at the bottom of the valley. On the other hand, the cloudless sky and the light of the rising sun on the hill foreshadow of the heat to come. Thank you for this trip!

Your “ simplify” is like getting a master’s degree as a colorist. The use of color mixing and the mixture of adjacent colors is masterful. Obviously.
I hope you have or will consider using prints of your paintings, this one for sure, for clothing as well. This painting would be awesome on a black trucker hat. And would make a great hoodie. Australia is going to have a new outback brand. “RME”
