Richard is a most unusual artist! scratches, blothes, paint strokes and he comes up with a creative and stunning drawing. Where is he from? Where is his studio? is his work for sale? As a fellow artist, he blows my mind with his unusial ways. IF HE WAS IN A SALON IN nEW york, he could get thousands for his paintings! maby he does anyway!
That is absolutely beautiful. When I saw the title I thought "no way is his technique going to lend itself well to a border collie portrait" And then the final product conveys all of the alert nervous energy of the breed in a way I didn't think possible. It's like the painting is moving when you look at it. Such a talent....nice job.
Nice dog Richard. I enjoy the way you zoom in to the surface at the end, something which we're all led to do when looking at real paintings before stepping back again to see the full representation - confirming that all painting is abstract in the end as it all just comes down to bits & pieces of paint, something which any serious artist should realise early on. Keep up the great work
Brilliant painting, sir! You know, I love how you're able to create this beautiful painting, basically from scratch. Fantastic job! You're a real master. Greetings from the EU!
amazing texture, very nice to look at it close. Just wondering if the same knife technique could be simplified in the background just to give 3D effect
How the hell do you do this?! Every single time I watch you start with random (not random) blocking out of colour then boom! It transforms into something wonderful. Congrats on the 20k too mate! Can't wait to celebrate 30k
Richard, Bella is a beautiful dog and you captured her perfectly. Very interesting watching you create the colors using a new pallet. Take care and Happy Painting!
I felt I learned a lot from this video so filled with technical tips, thank you! I really liked the way you did the grass, the high/ backlights and Bellas fur. The way you captured Bella is great, alert and looking like she is ready to follow her herding instincts, such a lovely painting!
Hello Richard. Well done, you have captured the personality of your dog very well: all her senses on the prowl. The background is really very beautiful with this light shining behind Bella and I prefer what you got on the right at the end over what appeared before. It's funny because I was wondering why you didn't paint your dog. It's done now! Thank you so much.
Richard you captured Bella beautifully your different palette of colours had worked creating an excellent background to Bella. Thank you for all your advice and hints on colour mixing. Love this painting. From an icy cold day here in Scotland.
Richard, hello! .. what a beautiful portrait of your dog. And your drawing skills, truly amazing (a big old palette knife and no prelim sketch, my goodness - what talent)!! Longtime fan of your work, John
You are quite a bit of a dancing painter - nice way of marking the feeling of life and beauty of your fine boarder collie Bella - and the way you put in the highlights made the light and Bella dance too - a very charming portrait filled with love, light and life. I love your painting style 🧡🖤
I admire your ability to create such life filled works with nothing but a knife. I hope to be brave enough someday to learn using the pallet knife more. Thank you for sharing your knowledge as well as sharing Bella today! 🎨
Thank you Richard for all the free advice you give, I think you have changed the way I paint, and I am enjoying it. I used to have a border collie called Lady, she was definitely brighter than me! All the best Peter
Hi Richard, Whilst I am not subscribed to your channel, I have however, Watched a number of your tutorials, many of them based on your landscape trips in the outback. I find your use of the large flat pallette knife absolutely amazing. The paintings you produce are phenomenal, the the initial outlay of the painting appears somewhat messy and unrecognisable but then something magical begins to takes place and suddenly the images appear to make graphical sense. It's as if you are constructing paint almost like those magical eye pictures. Incredible stuff. Nevertheless Richard I would to know what happens to your paintings after you have finished them? Could you do a video showing that side of your business as well? Do your paintings go to galleries or private collectors, or do you have your own gallery or sell online for example. Also how do you frame your paintings, wrap them and present them to your outlets? It would be good to learn from you about this side of your skills as well as seeing more of your amazing painting tutorials.
G'day mate, what a beautiful girl she is and so appropriate to capture her spirit. It's a delight to watch you mix paint and explain the intricacies of how each colour behaves when mixed or set beside each other. It is great and essential learning and I always focus intently on what you do. Bravery is needed sometimes in the strokes but there is no certain death for failing. Thanks once again for your generosity in sharing your knowledge and wisdom. I am very much enjoying the Musgrave-Evans University of learning. Cheers and be safe, Rich
Your beautiful dog is almost identical to ours that we recently lost to old age. Same mannerisms. Gentle soul. As a dog lover and an artist, I absolutely love your work. I mainly work in tight styles (technical and detailed), but your beautiful work of our wonderful country has inspired me to branch out and give palette knife painting a crack. Thanks for your posts... and give Bella a big pat from me.
Hi Richard, stopped by as soon as I saw you were painting your dog! Love to watch you handle such sensitive subject with your painting style! Absolutely love it😊
I just found you. Really love your work. And enjoy watching how you paint. Question. It doesn’t look like you are using anything like liquin to help spread the paint. I am amazed at how far you are able to go with that little bit of paint. How is that? And also I would love to see what you are looking st as you paint. Thank you Love your dog
Love it, and again your painting process is dynamic and inspiring. Would a landscape be ruined by the small figure of Bella in the scene? One of these days I hope you’ll be inspired to do a painting of yourself and Bella in the field together.
Your voice is so calming and soothing Or maybe it’s the accent. 😊. And how you take a real life scene in nature and create a mirror of it with your palet knife and beautiful colors is magical and magnificent! 😍
Absolutely stunning!!!! I learned so much and now I feel even more inspired to return to doing some palette knife painting!! Just loved your approach to bringing in those highlights on the tips of her fur, I think I would have overthought the process and overworked it but you just put it down so beautifully and left it. Thank you, you are an inspiration!!
Dear Richard....so amazing! The light...the grass....the beautiful dog Bella...the fur and the background...all is great...y learn so many things with you...dank you so much!...just....I'm afraid to paint with oil....🙊.?..bye ....always from Switzerland
Aren't border collies just the best? We had one, named Buddy, for a while, but he needed more space than we had at the time, so we gave him to a Scottish lady who was just tickled pink to have a dog from her homeland. She owned a ranch and I imagine they both were happier having one another :) By the way, you make my back hurt watching you paint like that with the palette between you and the board! Haha. I know you're used to it, but it would pretty much kill me! Anyway, enjoyed your video, as always.
Greetings, Richard. As I love dogs, I was very curious to see how you would do it with the big palette knife. I like the green, yellow and grey tones, a successful composition of the surrounding colours. You've also done a good job with the fluffy fur and the attentive look of the animal. Superbly done. I wish I could paint our little Rotti lady like this, but I guess I'll have to resort to photos. Thank you Richard, all the best and have a lovely weekend. ❤️
Again, this work is very good. The background is very exciting, I have nothing to complain about. 😀 😃 🙂 🙃 ;-) I think everything you paint and draw is great. In difficult times around the world, it is good to counter the positive power of colors. Great and thanks for your great work.
I love it!! When did you refine the dogs eye?? Did you use a smaller palette knife? I went back and couldn't find that part. I have made huge strides in my work since I started using palette knives. Thank you for your videos. They help me be more impressionistic but I do stray back to more realism by nature!!
Thanks Yvonne! I did use a smaller knife, but I do prefer to keep the knife as large as possible for a broader look in technique! Happy painting!!! :-)
Hey, Maestro! When you said Yum Yellow, I got a little omlette, and these colorful compositions prompted me to paint. I like how you mix the colors. Wonderful
I like your technique with the knife on board.I do a lot of dog portraits on canvas but it absorbs the paint.I do draw with Burt umber. You did a great job.

I thought you might have trouble with this subject,- but no. Same style, same great effect.
Hey cheers William!!! :-)
Richard is that mdfboard. You primed?
Beautiful job. A canvas apron might put that fear of paint on your clothes to bed for good.
Thanks Jeffery! Ducking the flying paint is half the fun, lol!!! :-)
Nice work!!!!! What white are you using? I don't think I heard
Cheers! Titanium white 🎨💯
I am always amazed that you don’t seem to get paint on your immaculate clothes.
