- Today - with oil paint and a palette knife - I will demonstrate my techniques for capturing an outback waterhole. The aim will be to portray the rugged rocky scenery, contrasting dramatically against the beautiful tranquility of calm reflective water!

Just stunning!! You are truly a master of color!! You lay the perfect colors next to one another creating the illusion of great detail only to look closer and find out our minds put the detail there. Amazing! I plan to show this to some of my adult painting students so they can grasp what I'm telling them about backing away from their work from time to time, examining the color values, and the placement of marks verses details. Thank you, such a treat to watch you paint.

Don’t disown me Richard, but I paint with acrylics. That said, I can’t believe how much I’ve learned about knife painting, reflections and so much more from watching you work. I also love your Aussieness, I’m a proud Aussie myself. I kind of envy your lifestyle, would love to jump in a fourbie and go bush for a while but I do that when I paint anyway (in my mind). G'day mate, another beautiful creation to start the day. Love how the tonal values in the foreground add interest but don't take the focus, rather embrace the blues of the water , directing the eye through the reflections and onto the stunning cliffs. The value of the colour wheel coming to the fore. What a stunning scene brought to light by the master illusionist himself. One of my favourite paintings among many. I like the videos. Appears to be California or Arizona? But the noise of the knife isn’t tranquil. Have you ever tried using only brushes? I think same affect could be achieved.

👋Good afternoon Richard, I am totally impressed with this gorgeous painting of yours. It is so lovely! Wonderfully harmonizing colors, bright pretty blues - I love these blues - marvelous reds, yellows, greens and purples, and the darker reflections on the waterhole appear as brilliant and clear as in a mirror. The rocky landscape is excellently sketched by the different hues you used, and you can also make out the green areas of the landscape very well. So for me, hardly a hint of abstractness, but a great whole that seems rather impressionistic due to your incredible skill and apt choice of colors, but almost appears realistic again when you look at it closely from a bit of distance. One just has to give the mind a little time to get adjusted to the slightly altered shapes and colors. - Thank you very much, Richard, for taking us again to this beautiful landscape. I love the gum tree and Murray river paintings but this one is definitely in my top 5 of your work. It makes me feel like I am right there in that canyon. Fantastic color and depth.
