Nightjet Sleeper Train Vienna to Venice in Double Deluxe Room

- We rode the Nightjet sleeper train Vienna to Venice in a Double Deluxe Room with OBB and loved it! Our journey started in the OBB lounge in Vienna, Austria and ended after we had reached Venice, Italy the next morning. We were served our choice of breakfast and had great views of the water coming into Venice. We booked a double deluxe room with a shower and were put in a triple room, but it was private for us. OBB Nightjet is a great way to travel!

@@gurametsadashvili1888 How do I reach her please🙏🏻
This is an EXCELLENT video👍😊. Your videos have inspired me to come out of my comfort zone and embark on journeys such as this. I will make it part of my bucket list 👍! God bless you and your husband for inspiring my dreams 🙏😊.
Thanks so much!
When you say you keep your back pack with you at all times? Where do you keep it when you go to dinner and such? Love your videos
It's so great to see you guys 'training' round Europe, and giving us your impressions from the other side of the pond.
Over here, European trains have had quite a bad reputation in the past, but they seem to be improving greatly now that people are looking for an alternative to flying.
If you get the chance, try some of the routes from Zurich!
Thanks! We did hit Zurich, but haven't made a video yet, but it has been filmed!
"Over here, European trains have had quite a bad reputation" do they? I have always liked the ÖBB night train. I took the same trip a decade ago - on a student budget - in the 6-people-sleeper compartement. Not as luxurious but still quite enjoyable.
@@idnwiw I did the couchette routes in France as a student decades ago and enjoyed them a lot.
i wish Amtrak had this bathroom design in ethier superliner or viewliner spleeping suite.
We did like that design, one of the better ones.
It might be more better to wish that Amtrak got this particular trainset for use in the United States and for VIA Rail here in Canada to do the same.
These sleeping-cars were originally built for Germany in 2003 to 2005 and sold to Austria in 2016 when Deutsche Bahn gave up operating own night trains. That was a little before travellers brought plenty of devices to be charged, hence only one plug per apartment; they haven't had a refurbishment yet, just a redecoration in blue nightjet livery (originally they were painted red and white).
Passengers who don't want to pay for the deluxe compartment can get a slightly smaller economy compartment that has exactly the same beds but no own bathroom and a bit less floor space. For them there is a public toilet on one end and toilet/shower on the other end. In the deluxe compartment you never need to leave because you have all the facilities; if you want, you can also order a supper in the evening to be brought to your compartment.
The tables are a little fiddly to put in place, a bit annoying for the staff.
ÖBB has ordered a new generation of nightjet trains, currently under construction. Those should run from spring 2023, beginning with lines to Italy. In addition to the current categories they will introduce "mini cabins" for one person, giving single travellers a small private space for a price considerably lower than a sleeping compartment.
Thanks for your info!
Wow! That is great news. Hope it will be a little faster, too.
@@secretstoasafestressfreetr1286 Maximum speed of the new nightjet units will be 230 km/h if coupled with a locomotive capable of that speed and running on a line allowing it. The bad punctuality of many nightjet routes has other reasons (lines occupied by other trains, trackwork in the night).
I might have attained train-nirvana. I actually watched this video while riding the California Zephyr outside Denver. LOL Also, at dinner tonight in the dining car, I was sat with a couple who are also followers of yours and were grateful for your videos to help them know what to expect on Amtrak. :)
That is a great story! Thanks for sharing it!
Wow! That's quite a happening all at once! Glad everybody was happy!
Thank you for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
You seem to be missing the best rail trip in the US: the Alaska Railroad. Or did I miss that. I’d also recommend looking at trips in Canada.
It is in the plans
How wonderful, kind of emotional seeing the ride especially from V. Mestre to V. Santa Lucia. My wife and I had a trip booked just a couple of months ago doing this but had to cancel. Absolutely must reschedule. As a Brit have spent so many happy vacations in Venice.
It has to be one of the prettiest stations to arrive at doesn't it!
@@GroundedLifeTravel stunning yes
Checking in. I love your traveling vlogs. Can’t wait to experience it soon. Enjoy!
Thank you!
You folks are getting around. How fun. Dreaming... Planning...
We finally made it to Italy!
I love seeing responsible adults travel. Gracefully organized chaos is my favorite aesthetic. 😍
Thanks!
you took quite a few sleeping cars. which one you find the best?
Nightjet was the best for the money, deluxe room. Caledonian was the nicest overall
👋 greetings from Glasgow Scotland 🏴 did you enjoy your visit to Glasgow
Greetings, yes we loved it!
My favorite!! Sleeper cars!! Thanks guys :-)
Thanks for watching!
Nice, detailed video! My husband and I will be traveling from Venice to Vienna. Then back after 5 days. We were looking for a daytime train sched but I think the nightjet is better but longer. By the way, did you purchase your tickets online or at the train station? Thanks for sharing your experience. Happy traveling. 😊
Glad it was helpful! Yes, longer, but we had fun, glad we did it. We used an app called Trainline to buy them in advance.
Did this train have a dining car or view room?
No it didn't have either
Is it difficult not speaking the language(s) in arranging your train reservations?
No, not at all, you can do it all online in English
Thank you. Your enunciation and smooth intonation and modulation is very pleasing and relaxing. I enjoy listening to you and hope you use your soothing voice to earn a living.
Wow, thank you!
You always bring a smile to my face 😊
Glad it does!
How do you get to the third bed>>??
We didn't try, I think it would be setup for you when you got on if there were 3 people
Nice way of presenting that. I have been travelling the NightJet for business a lot pre COVID, normally having one of those rooms all by myself, so I can totally relate to what you are saying.
The cold shower is something though I would have complained about. I never had that issue so far.
I would have definitely called the attendant regarding the lack of hot water. Maybe they would have allowed them to change rooms or given them some sort of credit. They are paying for the deluxe accomodations after all
Thanks for your input on the shower, we really weren't sure what the issue was. By the time we tried to take it, it was going to be a hassle to move so we kept it. Appreciate your thoughts on it.
@@GroundedLifeTravel Maybe it was because the train hadn’t started moving yet and so the water heaters weren’t activated? Just a thought. Extra cool room, tho!
@@jojoinrancho320 Heating is electric so the train needs to be coupled to a locomotive providing power or plugged into a stationary outlet when stored during the day. Naturally it takes some time to heat up the water. With three private and one public shower it's a bit tricky to provide all the hot and cold water in the constricted space of a railway car!
It looks like anyone on that upper bunk he's on would have very little room when the top bunk is down!
Yes, we were glad there weren't 3 of us. But it wouldn't have been the tightest one ever, but less room.
Hi great vid, have been watching you guys for a while now. Just a quick Q. When you quote prices for tickets are they for both or per person? Thanks and happy travels.
It is usually for both of us, one way
Hope you enjoyed staying in my home country. - Keep up the great work! 💛
We really have, thanks!
Question, since it's a european train I assume they speak different languages so how will they understand your order for meals?
They speak enough English that you can get by usually.
Okay you made me hit the subscribe button! We had plans for the nightjet in the opposite direction in 2020 (guess what happened to those plans). I hope to get to Europe soon. Love the videos. Thank you for doing them.
Thanks and thanks for watching! Hopefully you'll get on the nightjet soon!
A wonderful memory for me as you came over the causeway into Santa Lucia. I travelled there as student on an exchange program….Thanks so much.
Thank you for sharing your wonderful trip in Europe. I especially enjoy the meal portions of the trip.
Glad you enjoyed it
Great video
Thanks!
Another great video!! Hope you guys continue to enjoy your trip in Europe. You'll have great memories that will last a lifetime!
Thanks!
Thank you both. Your videos are so relaxing to watch and it sure makes me long for travel.
Thanks for watching!
Looking very very nice.
This is definitely a train I want to travel! I’ve seen other reviews of this service on other channels, too, & your review was one of the best I’ve seen! Can’t wait to see more of your European train adventures!
Thanks! It is highly recommended for the price. But... make sure you get the Deluxe room!
@@GroundedLifeTravel Thanks for that advice. Yes, want to be sure to do that!
I have two comments on your video's...
Rob, I'm 6'6" I will take the lower bunk...😁😁😁
I can't believe the weather you are catching...😀😀😀
When are you two going to try Tokyo Japan? You will love it. Lived there for 3 years. 😊😊
We would love to, it is on our list!
Is this a “bullet” train? Thanks for the tour.
I don't think it is considered that, it wasn't real fast. The Bullet trains are really high speed. Nightjet was overstating it's speed a little!
I love these videos! So, what are these Bose earbuds you speak of? I think I need a pair cuz of my snory, snory husband. LOL!
Bose Sleepbuds II, allie loves them!
Thank you! Just traced my material great grandmother’s side to Austria! Thank you for the tips as I am sure we will go someday!
Awesome!
Once you land in any country in Europe you don’t HAVE to fly around. There are so many options to see our continent for every budget and level of income. The continent is our back yard and we like to play in it!😊
So many beautiful things to see still, I also think it a hands down deal to use the train as conveyance and sub out a hotel for the night you travel.
This one was really fun, waking up in Vencie
Bar to Belgrade train journey....put it on your agenda , you guys would love that trip really enjoying your European series
Thanks for the idea, we will look into it!
Thank you Both❤️Great Info
Thanks
hehehe... I love the obligatory Allie eating video that appears in most of your videos. Those rolls looked delish, though breakfast perched on the suitcase looked a little unwieldy. I assume the train did not have separate luggage storage for your larger bags? The morning views were well worth it though (I loved the random digger on a tiny raft surrounded by endless water!). I definitely see the value in the Night Train (food, accommodation and travel!) but I'd love to see all the scenery as we travel through.. decisions, decisions.
Boring background music! Find something better and more exciting. This is making me sleepy 🥱😴🤤
Now do you really mean U.S. dollars? Some videos you quote in euros and then you do a conversion approximate, and some you just State dollars. So I find it a little confusing. Please just reiterate if you are quoting US dollars or another currency. Thank you
I wouldn’t class that as Deluxe after travelling on the Indian Pacific sleeper ,way much more room and the bathroom is way bigger
We love your videos 1st and foremost! I'm struggling trying to figure out how and when to book our night jet tickets. I have the Omio app. We want a private sleeper room for 2 people with in room toilet. Every date I put in says not available whether it's tomorrow or 7 months from now. What am I doing wrong? Thank you. 😶👍
Hello beautiful video thanks enjoy it maybe one day or someday.Take care all happy trails to you both.🤟🌈😊😊🌞😱😱🙏🙏
Thank you! You too!
2:00-The goodie bags are something that Amtrak (and VIA Rail here in Canada) need to consider giving out for passengers on long-distance routes (especially if they paid a lot of money for a sleeper berth.)
It was a nice touch for sure!
I guess the Euro rail pass that you could buy before you go to Europe is just for Coach seats? If you happen to see this maybe you'll answer, or maybe I'll find the information online. Again thank you
Wow awesome train. I've been watching Trains in Japan. They're also amazing.
Thank you very much!
I've taken this exact train only in the other direction. Unfortunatly I found the wheels to be extremely loud on this particular car. I believe the other Deluxe sleeper in the set is a bit newer and quieter. I'm disappointed that after many years I could still hear the loud wheels and some banging sound in the background.
otherwise a great product.
Great review you guys! The room and views look great! And, Rob is living like a king in his "above suite"! Lol
That was quite the top bunk!
I love watching this couple they are so down to earth with such a happy vibe. Rob will be sleeping like a King
One of the best sleepers for space ever! Thanks so much!
Nice room/set up and bathroom not a wet room. Rob got kicked back up to a penthouse. 😆Enjoy, hoping to catch you live.
Thanks!
What time you started the journey? Its looks early? And just check their train timetable that need changes many trains before you sleep hmm?
The views and the music are just perfect.
Thanks! Venice is beautiful to ride into!
The best view is deffinetly when you come out of the station and stand in front of those old buildings, the canal, the church its breathtaking
We did the Vienna to Venice overnight in a standard sleeper (rest room down the hall) - I loved it and slept well, my wife didn’t and hated it.
I think we took that one from Zurich to Vienna, it seemed as you described at least!
the price is per person or all together for both of you?
It was for both of us
Oh look, there's Alexandria now...dts/usa
It's great to compare the differences in accommodations with other countries. I need to continually be reminded that European countries are smaller than states in the U.S. & that train travel there can be no more than 12 hours. Getting coast to coast by rail in the U.S. takes 3 days.
That is the big takeaway for us from our trip, you are on Amtrak so much longer than a sleeper train in other countries.
@@GroundedLifeTravel, this _could_ be made faster if all rail in the United States was electrified, and with most of it being HST's like a TGV or Shinkansen, or just standard EMU's that can accelerate and stop on a dime. Biden needs to look at a long-term goal of electrifying most of the U.S's railway lines besides just upgrading the infrastructure generally so that sleeper trains can be a lot faster than they are now.
take into consideration the fact that Amtrak outside of the NEC rarely goes faster than 79 MPH (and most of the time the top speed is even slower than that) and is always constrained by freight trains, whereas here in Europe even sleeper trains consistently run at speeds up to 125 MPH with minimum interference by freight trains.
@@FSantoro91, that also happens here in Canada with VIA Rail
Totally awesome travelling 🚉
Thanks!
I loved the video, especially the music at the end. Thanks for sharing!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Is there a way to tell in advance which trains are double (up & down) vs single like this one? Is it by route, or a certain train designation? How can you assure yourself the higher ceilings if there are choices?
Good question, I'm not sure you can tell. We booked a double, but this appeared to be a triple that they just gave us. We did one other double and it was really small, but not deluxe. So... we would recommend getting the Deluxe if available.
if youre talking about the double decker - those are only travelling vienna-zurich and zurich-hamburg
I've just discovered your awesome content. I love the detail and practical tips. My wife and I have now booked a "deluxe" Nightjet sleeper from Amsterdam to Vienna as part of a holiday from the North-West of England.
Awesome! Have a great trip!
You guys are super cool and amazing couple, and give insightful info. I can’t wait to go on adventures like this with my girlfriend.
And your super amazing for replying to all the comments!

Can’t wait for the next video :)
Thank you!
Was there space below the bottom bed to slide those big luggage under?
No, it didn't fit so we had to put it in the corner. Something thin would fit
I grew up in Austria. I was born in Salzburg and have not been back in almost 50 years, I miss the family I still have there and the country. My family lives in Vienna. I am now almost 70 years old and just seeing glimpses of Vienna made me want to be there. Have fun in Europe.
I visited Vienna at few months ago... Love it. You have a nice country.
Spectacular video! I truly appreciate you two for taking me along on my TV via UA-cam. You made this trip especially exciting. It was luxurious.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Is there a you guys in Venice video?
There will be but not yet, we just left Venice a few days ago
As always, love following your travels. If you are somewhere with warmer temps when see this post, it was snowing in Gwinnett this morning. Brrr, enjoy your trip!
Wow, snow at home! We are from Sugar Hill. We are in Italy now though!
Truly enjoyed the video. I’m glad you guys had a great time.
Thanks so much!
Also a great video...:):):)
not bad,but i would prefer to fly!
That train needs updating no USB sockets.
Hi, is there passport control on the train?
length and price please
Q: Does the train (or the Intercity Notte) offer other places on the train to sit? or did you have to stay in your room the whole time? We're planning to go later this year in 2023 and your videos have been so helpful and interesting - Thank you!!!
I love the detailed tour of the sleeper! Thanks so much!
Glad you liked it!
The Deluxe Room is soooo much bigger than the standard Double you were in on the way to Vienna. You were both so good natured about the tight fit on the previous run, but this looked far more comfortable for you both. I know what I will be booking if I do the same trip. Thank you so much for sharing!
Not feeling the food
That is a stunning approach in to Venice.
We agree! Really love seeing the water!
Is there a window on upper bed?
I don't think there was one, it was pretty high up into the roof of the train
@@GroundedLifeTravel the train I saw had lots of headroom.
What’s the cost?
You two are just awesome! Love that you share your journey with us!!
Thanks so much!!
Great vlog. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
on the Scottish overnighter first class you did not need steps as it had a double bed not bunks
Oh wow!! Fabulous video!!
Thanks so much!
Lovely video. Seems a bit strange that there isn’t a window in your room on that train. That’s a bit bothersome….but everything else looked very nice. I was actually impressed by the swivel sink. Smart.
That was the first sink like that we've ever seen!
quite amazing trip!
Thanks!
Doesn’t the language barrier freak you out a bit? My friend was supposed to be going from Florence south to Rome. Somehow she got on the northern train and ended up in Bologna. Luckily, they let her get back on the train and ride back to Rome, but it was all in all kind of scary. She may not have been the most savvy traveler, but still . . .
Looks like you guys had a nice set up; thoughtful snack bag from Allie!!
My ancestors are from Italy, so I’d love to see it! Only Italian phrase I could master was Me Scuzzi!!!
National railways can be a bit old fashioned but even there nowadays I don't think you'll get around just fine with English only. If you talk to locals, it's just always nice if you know a phrase or two in the local language, no matter where you are. Europeans from other countries will most likely rely on English too when in Italy.
Most people will speak English. It’s not hard, you just have to find your bearings.
We haven't had any really language barriers the entire time in Europe. One hotel check in was complicated because we were extending and upgrading a room in German, which we don't speak at all. But... after a few minutes it was resolved. My phone is supposed to translate well, but I keep forgetting to try it!
@@GroundedLifeTravel I am surprised there are still hotels around where people aren't speaking at least sufficient English for the job but maybe smaller old school hotels might not always do? In any case young people should be fluent in English more often than not, across the EU.
Of course, off the beaten path, on the countryside it can happen that you don't find anyone who could help you in English but I wouldn't be too worried about it. Never tried smartphone translation but apparently that is a thing nowadays.
Fun fact : this train leaves Vienna with a section to Zurich and gets cars in Salzburg From Munich
Very interesting, thanks
