I wish SNCF and RENFE would get on board and take sleeper trains seriously again. I love RENFEs Trenhotel, but they've been cutting the routes so much. The west of Europe really has been left out. A Brussels/Koln to Barcelona/Madrid sleeper would be amazing. (either using high-speed lines, or a Talgo set on regular track). There's a TGV Brussels to Perpignan but only as a day train which is a real time-waster, and hardly a comfortable journey, and having to do that *then* change again to an onward train is absurd in the 21st century. We want a god damn sleeper with a god damn shower and a nice menu with those nice fluffy rolls you get on Nightjet, godammit. Oslo to Frankfurt/Berlin is a real missing link too - Norway really has fallen off the map.
"NightJet has almost single-handedly saved overnight rail travel in Europe". Pardon? In *Western* Europe. Sleeper trains have never been interrupted in Nordic, Central and Eastern Europe. I don't know why West Europeans always believe that Europe is limited to their part of the continent
They need dining cars, or at least bar cars, but otherwise they seem pretty luxurious for modern trains! I only hope the windows will be openable for a long time to come; it should be required by law. :-D
The fact that there was ONLY a delay of 2 hours amazes me. you probably know that that was one of the worst rain storm in belgium/ german/France history. Great review, love the video.
As far as I know, the confirmation of delay (27:30) is not only so that you can justify yourself to your employer or something. With 120 minutes delay or more, according to the European Rail Passenger Rights, you are also entitled to a refund of 50% of the ticket price.
do you know how that would work if you had a say eurostar connection but with a non refundable ticket ?do OBB do a single ticket Wien to London with this change in Brussels ?
@@dazlebluefrogify To avoid such problems you should book the entire trip with the same company. I had a journey from Nice to Brussels. Nice to Paris by SNCF, Paris to Brussels with Thalys. But I booked everything with SNCF. The Nice to Paris night train was cancelled, and so I missed my Thalys train. But SNCF then gave me a ticket for the next Thalys. If I had booked the Paris to Brussels train with Thalys, I would have had to pay for a new ticket.
As someone living in Germany, I can safely say that rail service in Austria feels superior. In my experience the Railjet/Nighjet trains have always had functioning wifi and air conditioning, and the stations throughout the country feel far more modern than Germany. Hope that in the coming years the DB goes through a large scale modernization of its stations and infrastructure.
Actually, it is the “modernizing” of DB that is the problem. Unlike OBB, the politicians and managers in Germany demand that DB act in the way they think a private corporation should act, to pursue profit. So everything DB does is focussed on getting an outcome as cheaply as possible. So they give minimum service, minimum repairs to their trains, minimum amenities to passengers, minimum customer service, minimum comfort on trains, minimum track servicing. Instead of focussing funds on core operations, they spend grandiose amounts on megaprojects like the new Stuttgart station and putting in high speed rail everywhere, even though it is massively expensive and isn’t needed by 95% of passengers. They also drain their funds on corporate empire building by acquiring companies in other countries. Now they don’t even buy loks from German companies anymore, instead they are buying them from Spain. Overall, DB is the ugliest collision between a once-glorious train service and extreme neoliberalism. Thank God, OBB and SBB have not been so badly infected by this deforming disease as DB and seem to have more sensible and grounded leadership.

As an American, I have very little knowledge of European trains but of all the reviews you've done this Nightjet looks to me to be the hands down winner. WHAT A TRAIN!!! Gorgeous front to rear, fast, quiet and all the amenities you need. I particularly loved the window shade instead of the usual curtains...PERFECT. Wonderful report. Love the new Hauptbahnhof in Vienna (I can actually remember the Südbahnhof in 1971!) and OËBB. One small comment: at 10:20 you describe traveling eastwards to Germany - it is really westwards.
Tried the NJ in September. We arrived in Vienna 45 minutes late, which was ok, but during the night, we had no electricity. That means no light, no water, no flushing toilet and no air conditioning or even fresh air. That spooked me in the tiny Deluxe jail cell, so I went looking for an attendant somewhere in the train twice. They couldn't fix it, but somehow everything worked again at 4h40. I filed a complaint and half of our ticket was refunded for the technical breakdown. The delay of 45 minutes wasn't enough. Would like to try the NJ again though.
You need to know, that this day, a huge flooding in the west of Germany between Aachen and Cologne, the south of the Netherlands and Belgium occured, that destroyed many railroad track, as towns and did cost many lives. The locomotive is changed in Aachen. The ÖBB locomotive goes there (NS Vectron taking over the Amsterdam portion in Köln West). The nightjet Zürich - Amsterdam will have older sleeping-cars rebuilt from T2S, no private bathrooms/showers and only 160 km/h. You have found a wondrous life, riding trains each day and capturing the experience, and making money from it. Bravo! I love that view from the cafeteria, looking out the long line of windows at the trains! Reminds me of a few scenes from Star Trek (A TV episode and a movie) where people are looking out a long line of windows at the ENTERPRISE in a spaceport.
Ah, das ist die Reisekultur! Just like it was shocking to arrive at Südbahnhof from Czechia in the 90s it's still shocking to arrive at Hauptbahhof these days. There's so much little diffrencies that the overall gap is simply gigantic. Staying envious and hoping I'll get one more chance to get in there for a visit. I am not saying it's NCC Enterprise but it exactly shows how the job should be done. Design, efficiency and simplicity all in one. And the trains are pretty long too. That's always a good sign. For me more than enough. Yeah, even railways could be working I told myself. Thank you for your report.
Back in 1999 i took the CNN City Night line train from Vienna to Cologne, luxury single cabin with dawn feather blankets, shower in cabin and bathrope and private breakfast incl. Champagne. Great vlog as always, your content is first class, agree that 10am arrival to far to late if people are using this for business in Brussels, once again Nightjet nailed it, Nightjet should seriously looked into what it would take to travel through the Channel tunnel and start Sleeper from London, as they’d making a killing.

With an arrival time of 10.00., the alternative would be an early morning flight at 7.30 or 8.00 catching which would mean getting up at 5.00-5.30 to get to the airport and deal with security. I don’t like early starts and prefer to arrive the evening before. Otherwise it is a choice between a short night at home and early start or longer sleep time in a bunk.
Inspired by your video, I just took the night jet ( sleeper car) from Venice to Vienna! What a great experience, service and alternative to flying! Thanks for sharing your videos.
When did you do that trip ? In summer 2021 there were very severe floods in the region, and the Aachen to Liege railway line has been interrupted for almost 2 months (mid July to mid September).
What a great trip, and yes, Overnight Train arriving after 8.00 is considerably late. For me, Overnight Train should be arrived at before 7.00 or between 7.00 and 8.00. Great Room, great amenities, and yes Great breakfast.
I SO disagree about the arrival time. I hate it when you get woken up at dawn on a sleeper! I'm NOT a morning person, so arriving 2 hours late is a bonus! Brilliant trip!
Right. I once took a night train from Paris to Castelnaudary. Since Castelnaudary was the first stop, we arrived already at 5.40 am, on a public holiday in November. Imagine being in the station of a completely deserted small town in the dark, with the first train leaving only two hours later.
Love the sound the engine makes when starting. What a pleasant way to say "Look out I'm moving". I prefer 10 am to 7 am arrival times, I am not a morning person. And nothing is open at 7 am. So you get there early and have nothing to do because nothing is open.
I agree with the last part. I used to take the night train from Milan to Brussels in the 1990s. Arriving at 7.00, I used to pass the time in the wonderful Metropole Hotel drinking coffee and reading newspapers before the city woke up. Sadly those trains do not exist any longer and the Metropole also closed its doors due to Covid and the side effects of pedestrianisation.
Wanted to take that train the other way around, but corona just fucked everything up. so scheduled to next year. Gonna start in Aachen (my hometown), head to Vienna and from there on further to Slovakia. At least, now I know what to expect from the train, so thanks for the video ;-)

Do you know where that diversion went? At 22:29 the train passes through Pulheim (which is northwest of Cologne), but in the south-east direction, i.e. opposite of the overall direction of the ride
just a few adjustments to your videoblog: the tables from your cabin are not supposed to be stored where they are now. the breakfast in included in the price. it has already been paid for. however, a certain amount of items are included. any extras are available at cost. a refill is free in sleepingcar, however it must be either coffee or tea.
Your videos are fantastic about these trains In South Africa we have a VERY VERY bad railway system as they steel the rail tracks and the copper cables for the signal system. The say it could take ten years to get the system working properly again
Deluxe accommodations and service! Except for the delay, you couldn't ask for more! I hope that they will continue to offer the ensuite toilet/shower as an option. In the US, the newer trains have eliminated them.
I took a Swiss Narrow Gauge train tour in 2010 that included, Bernina Express, Glacier Express and Golden Pass. I remember eating mouthwatering gelato in Tirano.
It's fun to see how almost every European rail company has stopped running night trains because they are unprofitable, and ÖBB is expanding it all over Europe because they can run it with a profit, even without subsidies.
no. they cant. on certain particular lines they might get +- 0. but overall this is the result of a countryvhaving the interest in establishing a rail communication network because it benefits them. öb where asked ti expand in to the nordics but as there where no subsidies available at the time they declined.

that is accurate,VERY ACCURATE
I saw this train pass by between Leuven and Brussels the other day ! It's strange because at this point it's only 4 cars !
Gulp. They'll probably axe it, then?
@@goqsane I understand that they split it in Cologne with some cars stopping there and others going on to Amsterdam. Would not make sense to have three separate trains leave Vienna.
VIELEN LIEBEN DANK...FRIEDEN und FREIHEIT...
I think the 10:00h arrival is perfect. Very civiised!
srsly the locomotive has a starting melody, that's dope
Between Welkenraedt and Liège your train took the freight line via Montzen because passenger line via Verviers was already damaged
You've convinced me to take overnight trains on the European continent I'll check out your other vlogs for the other routes you recommend.
That is a sleek fancy train!
Back in 1999 i took the CNN City Night line train from Vienna to Cologne, luxury single cabin with dawn feather blankets, shower in cabin and bathrope and private breakfast incl. Champagne. The round trip ticket costed 750 DM back then the equivalent of 750 Euros today with inflation considered. I'll never forget that luxury night ..there was even a bar/nightclub car on the train. Perfect experience!
Cool, Holger. The past form of 'cost' is 'cost', not 'costed'. Het beste.
@@goqsane oh and btw , next time and before you embarrass yourself again, you should double check online. It's free!
@@methefugitive Hey Holger. I'm not the one who said costed for past form of cost. It's not a mistake. It's your absolute ignorance.
@@methefugitive I still have a screenshot of your incredibly narrow-minded racist primitive thinking. You must be a pretty sad man, huh?
Good evening Holger. Did you finally get to spend some time with an English book? Make sure to read on the 'irregular' verbs part. You might be surprised it's 'put' and not 'putted', as well.
Great vlog as always, your content is first class, agree that 10am arrival to far to late if people are using this for business in Brussels, once again Nightjet nailed it, Nightjet should seriously looked into what it would take to travel through the Channel tunnel and start Sleeper from London, as they’d making a killing.
You mean getting half of the old Renaissance train sets in Canada for ÖBB Nightjet London St Pancras Wien Hbf via Aschaffenburg Hbf Main Spessart Bahn Schnellfahrstrecke Köln-Aachen Westbahn Linz Wien Hbf. Locomotives are Class 92 Calais-Fréthun to London St Pancras Calais-Fréthun Lille Brussels Midi Liege Aachen Hbf SNCB HLE18. ÖBB1116 1016 DB BR182 Aachen Hbf
8:28 So the Taurus uses the same VVVF as previously used on (Japanese private operator) Keikyu 2100 series?
The thing on the wall 16:19 looks like a loudspeaker to me! (German frequent rail traveller here...). Those sound really tinny.
🤷🏾♀️
Thumbs up for the review. I especially loved the shower part. Oh and, Benjamin, you might want to trim that bush a bit. :D
Natural body, natural shower review! :)
WHAT A CRACKING VIDEO!! Good job Thibault, congrats.
When did you do that trip ? In summer 2021 there were very severe floods in the region, and the Aachen to Liege railway line has been interrupted for almost 2 months (mid July to mid September).
It was a few days before the disruption (early july)
Vienna to London Nightjet service would be nice too!
Agreed. I hope that will be possible.
Great tour of the shower compartment and little else
Nice ride! The price seems fair, considering you didn't have to pay for a hotel room.
Bonjour.
Do you know where that diversion went? At 22:29 the train passes through Pulheim (which is northwest of Cologne), but in the south-east direction, i.e. opposite of the overall direction of the ride
Well done Benjamin. OBB is great.
I'm in New Orleans and that video sent me here! Love this channel,❤️
just a few adjustments to your videoblog: the tables from your cabin are not supposed to be stored where they are now. the breakfast in included in the price. it has already been paid for. however, a certain amount of items are included. any extras are available at cost. a refill is free in sleepingcar, however it must be either coffee or tea.
Awesone trio report!! Awesome accommodations!! Sorry for delay and rainy weather. But arrival safe and sound😀😀♥️♥️
8:28 you can tell it's a heavy train (14 carriages!) by the slower and slightly irregular Taurus tone when departing
Your videos are fantastic about these trains
In South Africa we have a VERY VERY bad railway system as they steel the rail tracks and the copper cables for the signal system.
The say it could take ten years to get the system working properly again
Deluxe accommodations and service! Except for the delay, you couldn't ask for more! I hope that they will continue to offer the ensuite toilet/shower as an option. In the US, the newer trains have eliminated them.
That's what gets me, Bob; why _did_ Amtrak get rid of them?
In the Deluxe compartments, you have another electric outlet in the bathroom.
That breakfast with a view was love :)))
This is something I want to do on my next trip to Europe. It is amazing that you were able to book this for about $245 U.S.
Very interesting and so special review 😉 Thanks!
You should try get an OBB train from Wien HBF to Hallstatt. I tried that. It is so beautiful. You can see the mountains and lakes.
Omg that departure sound!
Amo tus vídeos, este verano quise tomar el tren nocturno desde Viena a Florencia pero ya estaba todo vendido.
Un abrazo desde Santiago de Chile 🇨🇱🏳️🌈
I took a Swiss Narrow Gauge train tour in 2010 that included, Bernina Express, Glacier Express and Golden Pass. I remember eating mouthwatering gelato in Tirano.
Very cozy sleeper train, can take a sleep for over night with a great place
Wow 14 Carriages is a loooong Night Jet.
@@johndoe1909 Too long distances with too few inhabitants. And restrictive rules for trains in the two tunnels to and from Zealand. It's much better to focus on continental routes.
In ten years, maybe, when the new Danish-German tunnel is ready, if demand for night trains then is sufficient.
My friend ...now in. 🌍Europe is not option ...Climate. Change ideology will destroy the airlines company's ,so the rail night travel must become nr 1 ..
@@jmolofsson The issue is that Sweden, Norway and Finland all have night trains of our own, and Denmark isn't exactly the hottest market. It's more likely you'll see SJ open up more of the old sleeper routes they used to run.
great sleeper! wow
Nice video did you enjoy the breakfast it does sound very austrian with the rolls & jam.
Great video !!
Been wanting to go on this train since February 2020. Time to get on it.
What a nice video, thank you for sharing. Thumb up to Siemens !
Did alot of people actually travel to Belgium or did most of them get off in cologne?
I know this is probably too late for a reply but I'm kinda intrigued by that mysterious red-white train set parked across from the lounge at 2:25.
Doesn't look like any current ÖBB or DB livery.
That's the local express (REX) train to Bratislava. It's usually mixed carriages, the front ones (that you can see on this video) are Slovak ZSSK coaches, the back ones ÖBB.
If there is no deluxe sleeper with ensuite toilet, what would you recommend: private couchette or private sleeper (wash basin) for a couple. there is about 40 euro price difference
The heavy rainfalls were in southwest Germany :-) not in South East Germany
We’re they not in the Köln area and over the border in Belgium? As a foreigner, I don’t consider NRW southern but simply western.
I have a question to you: have u considered to make a video at the nightjet from Amsterdam Centraal/Brussels Zuid/Hamburg-Altona to Vienna? Or is it in production?
That was very informative, obbnightjet certainly have the european sleeper market covered very well..
Fun fact for those who know: The sleeper train from Vienna to Amsterdam has the number 420 😉
At 22:30 you passed the station of Pulheim (Little city after cologne), has the train changed his direction in Rheydt or Mönchengladbach?
Great video. That was a beautiful train. Thank you for sharing your videos. I look forward to seeing your next video. Very exciting.
Wonderful journey 😍
I'm sure I overlooked it trying to read the caption and see what was going on, what did it cost?
