Pretty sure the Trenitalia driver hasn't even been properly trained on troubleshooting faults of the equipment he's operating on, that's actually quite common especially when the rolling stock is new and lines are just being inaugurated. And having the pax disembark was probably an operational request from ÖBB control center, only allowed to Rome empty for safety reasons. It's just poorly organized altogether, but it doesn't seem to be the fault of "one single person" here. Chain of events, of course very disappointing. Hope these teething issues get solved soon.

@doc7austin Oh yes, typical, push the guilt towards others. Trenitalia (probably answer): "It was OBB decision"... Just thinking about cost for compensation, multiply this 200 times (passengers), and there comes the "worthiness" of journey cancellation. I think OBB should attach some service car to each NJ2 with Siemens engineers just in case...

No, it was probably a Trenitalia operation centre decision because of big delay.

@@doc7austin most likely you won't get kicked out of the train next time. It is one thing that Siemens was getting delayed and didn't even bother to produce a train that just runs properly in passenger service. It is another thing to say "Avoid this train under any costs" while I for once was really happy in my little couchette capsule back then from Vienna to Bregenz. And it was affordable, too! So as long as ÖBB is able to operate the train almost entirely on their own infrastructure, you are fine. But when it comes to operations abroad, we get into trouble.
Though last time I went on an older train from Vienna to Milano it worked fine, aswell. You just had bad luck tbh.

The NJ2 is the best thing that ever happened to night train traffic.
Just the fact that you can travel alone for low price (mini cabin), not needing to be in contact with any unnecessary stranger while travelling, not needing to be watching him, listening to him snoring or smelling his ass, is what makes these trains top!
This is the way the train industry should go everywhere. Completely dividing passengers and prevent any unnecessary contacts. People travel alone in 95% and want their own privacy.

    • @doc7austin

(except travelling in full seating compartment, of course.)
Mini Cabin is a perfect couchette "replacement" for solo travellers. Remember: 75% of people live and travel alone, and in 10 years it will be 95%. Even the 4-berth couchettes will soon be replaced by Mini Cabins.

  • @LucasTheElectrostar
    @LucasTheElectrostar 3 місяці тому +5

In my opinion OBB should've never ordered these trains in the first place, as I can already tell they will not be able to operate with half of their Nightjet services anyways. This is because of the following reason:
    • It seems that the coaches are not compatible with other sleeper carriages, therefore they are isolated to a full trainset. If one coach fails, the whole of the train fails.
This brings me to the conclusion that rather than ordering a whole trainset, they should've ordered separate carriages, and despite this being more of an expensive option, it would allow them to be compatible with all of Night Jets services, allowing them to couple to other carriages from other trains. E.g A Night Jet carriage couples to a Hungarian MAV sleeper.

I dont think so, I took a nightjet recently and the new Nightjet 2 9 on route vienna - hamburg (i think) was coupled with the old nightjet (that I took) vienna - utrecht. THey split them off somewhere along the way.

Well I think the reason for this disaster is from the Trenitalia staff: maybe they don't know how to operate this kind of train, or they screwed up the technical device,... I don't wanna defend them, but the NJ 2 is still good enough: I have been on a trip Vienna-Hamburg, except of the defect keycard make my room can't be opened (the staff find another one at the same top bed after 10 mins) and the AC was pretty weak, all was ok, the staffs from OEBB are nice. I've never tried the nightjet before and now I'm curious if this happens more often or not? I live in Salzburg and here some NJ services start or go through with a stop... The NJ2 was "published" way too soon, they needed more tests. Also they ordered Vectrons for these trains, but you see Taurus (ÖBB 1116 /1216) more often, because the delivery of the Vectrons is delayed.
Of course the critical issue happened after takeover by italian staff and they don't know what to do so they just got the train out of service... typical - they needed more training

Don't passengers have a right to be brought to their destination, even with trains of another company?
In that case it would mean free ride with Frecciarossa/italo (doesn't matter).
Nightjets between Austria and Italy are among the most delayed trains in Europe, this is said to be because of nightly trackwork in Italy but as we see in this case it is because of a problem on the train.

When introduced, Nightjet was a great offering but they have been spoiled with their own success and I think that, unless they change their strategy, it will be doomed! I paid over a €1000 for a return comfort deluxe sleeper for 2 between Amsterdam and Innsbruck in June in NJ1 stock that is in dire need of refurbishment (climbing ladders that are bare metal is no joke for a 75 year-old in the middle of the night). It is going to cost me more next year and I have just done a calculation that it will be cheaper next year to do the journey by ICE with an overnight stop in Frankfurt (Maine), even after factoring the cost of the overnight hotels. OK, the return journey will be two days longer but the cost will be better and, with the state of the stock, will probably be more comfortable.

Google translated that error message to "A Gross Error" 🙂The problem with the new Siemens cars is that they are permanently coupled, so if one car has safety issue, then all cars hace a safety issue since they can't take deffective car out of consist.
Air valve would likely be related to braking which would be very safety critical. For all you know, the conductor kept his thumb pressed hard on the leak all that time so that they train could make it to the first station where you can catch a train to Rome. But interesting that the train later made it to Roma train station (I could have understood traim limping to Rome's maintenance shops but not to the train station, unless they though problem had been fixed and the return journey would proceed. (so it all depends on what time you got the notice of cancellation).
The problem with your door handle is really poor workmanship on brand new trains and there is no excuse for that.
The old Viaggios were very old/conventional steel design. Not sure when they stopped production. If they had to hire new employees to not only restart production, but also get that plant to start working with more modern aluminium trains, fixed couplings etc, it is quite possible that Siemens has has quality assurance problems (like it does assembling old steel viagios in USA (called Venture due to all the USA modifications made, they are no longer Viaggios)
I get the feeling Nightjet is victim of its own success and unable to keep spare equipment for last minute substitutions when there are problems like you are experienced, and likely have such high utilisation rates for the trains that there is little time for maintenance.
The Nightjets are not RIC, but the marking on the car indicate, next to the 230 speed rating that it has been quaified for A, D, I and CH. have no idea wat A is, but suspect D for for germany, I Italy and CH for Switzerland. ( Being based in Austria, ÖBB need not list Austria as a country where its non RIC carriage is authorized to be used). BTW, I find it interesting that a foreign conductor would be in charge of mechanical aspects of the train. You would think an OBB employee that remains on board through the journey would be.

Excellent video as always - thank you. However, I think 'avoid OBB NightJet at all costs' is a bit unfair. I know from personal experience - sleeper bookings that go wrong are more difficult to navigate than cancelled daytime trains, i.e. when the problem(s) leaves passengers stranded at night. Rail Operator and/or Credit Card Insurance (here in the UK) will usually refund costs - but finding a train full of people somewhere safe to stay late at night is not automatically easy. For that and other reasons, I prefer daytime trains and hotels overnight. That said, our experiences to date with OBB NightJet have been good.

RFI is responsible for not allowing Nightjets onto their high speed network, Siemens fucked up the train software, Trenitalia conductors didn't have the knowledge of operating the train properly and informing passengers rightfully (although they announced you can take the highspeed train to Rome at 9:33) but yet ÖBB is blamed?

Which software is the "problem"? Where are all the "bugs" said in video? It's a complete shittalking of ÖBB without any reason. If there is a problem because of that "valve", the first blame is the Trenitalia conductor and maybe their training procedure on new units. Who is responsible for that? Trenitalia, ÖBB or Siemens? And I doubt it very much that the cancellation in Florence has any connection with the valve. The Trenitalia operation centre just shortened the train route because of big delay (they are doing it often) and sent the passengers to Frecciarossa, and then transported train to Rome as an empty stock, as there are many train paths full at that time (2 hours later than planned) and the train could have had even bigger delay because of it (195 min means they managed to get the train to Tiburtina quite fast, they could have 200+).
Which are other "bugs"? Broken handle? The software error and lights on happened when still in Austria, nothing to do with RFI or something. It's very probably a safety mechanism that when hard error happens, all the lights are turned on to ensure evacuation if necessary.
How was the ride itself? Comfortable ride, good sleep? Nothing mentioned in video, just complete shittalking. Where are highlights of Direttissima between Bologna and Florence with the longest tunnel in Italy? Normally these things are in videos, but this one had to be negative from the very beginning. It is a purpose of this video. Already the "Train not safe" title, while there is not a single thing in video to support that.
And at the end... Where are 1000 EUR? I only read less than 500.
And one more remark: Italy does not start on Drauwechsel bridge in Villach. It just starts some kilometres before Tarvisio.

It's not that I enjoy your suffering, but 5 minutes into the vid and I'm truly captivated as to what could've gone bad, and boy... did the train deliver.
I mean, you had more than one hour delay, look at the bright side: you're getting your money back. Due to the complexity of the trip... idk 25%, 50% or full refund. I guess it will serve OBB well. Keep up with these defects and their budget won't handle so they'll press Siemens charges for delivering them ... a brick.
In Romania (I'm from Romania) chances were you could pitch a 9-hours delay (this year's record) AND not get your money. So you'd be poor, hungry (no restaurant/breakfast option), tired and irritated.
The Nightjet 2 felt indeed on its inaugural journey: plagued with issues. To be honest, a little amazed because I'm sure tests have been made, but undiscovered by now?
Either way, the OBB has that app which allows you to report any defects. REPORT EVERYTHING.
And good thing you reported that Italian chap. Rudeness shouldn't be tolerated!
But on a brighter note, you may have seen that in Romania, most SH western or malfunctioning rolling stock gets imported and put to use. If the Nightjet 2 is of no use, throw them over here :) they'd be good as they are.
    Fancy lights? Don't need them?
    wireless charging? nope.
    breakfast? absolutely not.
ipotetically, as long as the cabin door shuts, the rest are perks and it's good to go on the Ro network.
SO if this was horror, try a Ro national sleeper wagon class 71-31, let's say from Timisoara to Iasi, it'd change your view on these Nightjets :)
    Cheers!

I totally get you as a fellow Turk. Honestly, even CFR's couchette beds are comfier than the best TCDD offers.
As for the delays, Romania and Turkey are in the same boat. Europe’s passenger rights are amazing compared to Turkey. Here, even a "fast" train can have a 30-minute delay on a 3-hour trip. And don’t even get me started on the night trains-they’re officially 13 hours but always run at least 3 hours late, and TCDD doesn’t even adjust the schedule.
So yeah, it’s no wonder we see Europeans as "crying babies" over minor delays, especially from a Balkan perspective…

So what do you pick? Starvation and cold/sauna in train or book and overnight for your trip the following day?
