Benny Goodman - Sing Sing Sing pt.1 (Drum Cover) (Tribute to Gene Krupa)

- Hey guys.
So a little different genre, then what I've been normally posting.
So exactly last Friday, October 16th, marks exactly 47 years ago, when the legendary jazz, big band drummer "Gene Krupa" passed away. So I decided to do a drum cover of one of Benny Goodman's signature songs "Sing Sing Sing" that Gene Krupa was most memorable by, as a tribute. I also decided to dress more formally for the video, just to look more like the big band style.
I used to play this song a lot with the Toronto All-Star Big Band as an encore or finale and I had a drum solo feature, which was always very fun, so this song always brings me back great memories.

Musically Buddy Rich did nothing for me ....Gene Krupa on the other hand , now that is musical drumming
The sound of drums, combined with the clarinet - just those two instruments -creates a haunting, exotic mood of the jungle. Primordial feeling. Both Benny Goodman and Artie Shaw used this combination profusely, during the same period in the 1930s, and I'm not sure who stole it from whom. But I think that Artie was the first who developed it into an art form; and when 'Sing Sing Sing' was performed by Benny, it became "melody and beat standard". The emphasis is on the perfection of beat and melody, and it is the golden rule that all dance music (which came from swing), is judged by. I was told by a player who played in Benny Goodman's orchestra, that Benny was precisely counting tempo and beats, sometimes using a stopwatch/metronome, and INSISTED that the tempo and beat are perfect; otherwise, dancers will go off the floor.
IF I was a drummer and I was condemned to play only one song for the rest of my life, “Sing, Sing, Sing” would be it. Well played, mate.
This is just the basic sing sing sing. Listen to what he does on the Ed Sullivan show.
It's another tribute to you. Since I sang this song a lot, I can listen to your performance more. I look forward to your next performance.👏👏👏👏👏🎶🎶🙂🎶🎧🎧🙂🙂👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍🎆☃️
Even in your today's costume, you can feel the courtesy and respect for him...you are really great.👏👏👍👍👍
this is a song written by Louis Prima.. Originally titled Sing, Bing Sing, as in Sing Bing Crosby.. Louis and Bing were close friends.. Louis wrote this when they were at a race track..telling Bing to Sing out the name of the winning horse to be..
The Tux, and then the black, and white, put this over the top. Thumbs up!
Thank you!!!!
Tux is so right for this elegant music, perfect!
This diude needs a good women....however he never really understood the logic of picking up a good woman....gooooood drumming dude
Dude seriously...I know you need a good woman
This is how you do it>
Excellent. Gene Krupa would be smiling down at you!
Thank you!!!!
@@drummarkdrum you is fantastic
Very clean job. I always felt Gene Krupa's playing was, well, sort of more musical than many others. And every time I hear that recording of the 1938 concert I wish I had been born early enough to have been there. What a night that was. Benny Goodman was nervous that it wouldn't be well received. And now almost a hundred years later, it is STILL well received.
Gene Krupa was not better then all drummers, but gene Krupa was BETTER than all drummers
Gene was my favorite drummer of all time. I had the LP of the 1938 Carnegie Hall Concert which I played over and over, endlessly, much to my parent's chagrin. Even in the car today when I play it I can see Gene hitting the skins. That was a wonderful rendition of that classic song. Kudos to you sir.
Love it but skin heads would sound better, just my opinion.
drums sound awesome...hard to get a good floor tom sound...
I love this and can't thank you enough. Thank you!
@@AC-gw4qu Thank you for watching and commenting!!!

This brings back such fun memories of you playing this with the Toronto All Star Big Band....like you mentioned above. It was fun for you but it was also sooooo fun for me watching you. Pure joy!
Gene Krupa the legend. So many fabulous percussionists around back then. Second to Gene, Lionel Hampton.
Lionel Hampton was a drummer before he switched to vibes, that's why he was so good rhythmically.
Awesome! Ya know that Peter Criss from Kiss was a Gene fan and had met him ...check out his solo from Kiss Alive! ...100,000 thousand years!
That was really good! Great job Dude! I love Gene Krupa, he is one of my greatest influences as a trap player next to Joe Morelo and Bill Ward. Keep up the great work! 😎
Amazing performance, spot on drumming with such a great feel. Cheers!
So Nice

When I was a kid Mr. Krupa and Mr. Rich was the reason I wanted to be a drummer and then I herd Mr. Bonham
I played trumpet from 4th to 6th grade. I have nothing to add here.
Nice dynamics and feel. Well done!
Thank you!!!
Great, thanks for doing this!!
Well done! You rock, brother
Thanks John!!!!
Holding the sticks in the match grip is not a tribute, it's an insult...
Super cool.... I'm more of a metal drummer who loves this song... Though yea.. I'll play along.... Ok... It's hard!!! Total props!!!! Gonna learn this song now for sure!!!!!
Thank you very much. Nothing wrong with being exposed and playing multiple different genres.
No kidding, way back in high school Jazz band I thought John Bonham was God. Then my band teacher turned me onto Krupa. Krupa was a monster player.
Best big band tune and you slayed it. Good job and beating those drums in a black tie even!
Thank you!!! I intentionally wore a suit just to fit in with the style.
“It don’t mean a thing, if it ain’t got that swing...”

You’re 100% in jazz music and you don’t use traditional grip ?
Gene Krupa would be mad
@@musicisthecure6934why are you so angered on what grip people use.
