RJ wasn't with Team USA in 2002 when they lost in the World Cup at Indiana. While they dominated the FIBA America Cup the following year (with those players he mentioned), it was the same story for the '04 Olympics and it's not as if the system was any better for the '06 World Cup until now. They just have more unguardable players. Those select teams with guys who played in World Cup qualifying defend better and look like a legit FIBA Team than anyone USAB can pick from the NBA over an off-season.

I think it’s crazy that RJ has the same 3pt percentage as Larry Bird, when Larry Bird didn’t grow up with a 3pt line; it didn’t exist. His first organized basketball experience with the 3pt line was his rookie season in the NBA. And he still shot as well as someone who grew up with a 3pt line their entire life. A lot of those older players who said no had personal and career issues that year, legal problems, contracts, injuries, relationship with their Olympic teammates. They were putting all of that above the interests of the US national team. That's why the young squad was sent in, they were still pretty good, but just way too young.
