The problem with American basketball in general, and NBA basketball in particular, is that the game has been totally disrespected. Offensive play is clearlhy favored, and the most complex strategy is the pick and roll. Big ,men are useless (with a few exceptions) and coaches are merely an ornament. A lot of iso, a lot of "this is my team", and amazing athletic displays, but lack of fundamentals and team play. The US has amazing players and the pool to choose from is huge (most countries in Europe are smaller than some states in the US), but the way the game is being played and officiated has had a negative overall effect. To me, it is a lot more interesting to watch a Euroleague game than an NBA game, even though there is less individual talent. The game has a lot more intricacies and, thus, more interesting. Strategy is more complex, and team play is favored over iso play.

Exactly the average NBA fan just sees the athleticism and apparent "skill" and accepts it, not realizing the league has manipulated the rules for a visually pleasing game. The NBA is very much a commercial product today.
That's the reason former Euroleague players are dominating the NBA today, Jokic, Giannis, Luka, Porzingis, Markkanen, they were brought up on physical, team-oriented play.
I think that's why Jokic wasn't celebrating when he won the NBA championship. He knows it's not the best competition.
The rest of the world is catching up because they didn't sacrifice the integrity of the game for offense. The 90s NBA players played through physical era so of course they dominated in the Olympics. The Dream Team was also more team-oriented, still fresh from the 80s. Today's players are used to rules that accomodate offense and rules that favor them. So when USA teams play international teams, they're not prepared for the physicality and the execution of other nation's national teams. Even the Olympic team with Durant suffered 3 losses. They barely won gold by 5 points over France.

@@zachsabbath1 Doesn't change the fact that NBA today is soft and overrated. In 2021 a Team USA squad of Durant, Tatum, and Lillard LOST to Nigeria. They also lost to Australia. You can even go back to the 2006 FIBA World Cup, when Lebron, fresh off averaging 31.4 ppg and Wade, a Finals MVP and NBA champ, and Top 10 scorer Carmelo Anthony LOST to a Greek team with ZERO NBA players.

I saw on TV, once I got out of the class that Argentina was actually ahead on the score and ran home, around 500 meters, at top speed to catch the end of the game.
That game, and that argentinian team, was INSANE.

Also remember that Arenas were mostly empty...one of our news reporter were walking around the arena and asking the random passersby if they knew what event is holding in the arena, most of the people didn't know nor cared.

I mean, we won all the golds since 2008 in the Olympics so not sure what you’re talking about but hey, that’s just my take. Honestly though, and not to sound arrogant, do Americans really care about FIBA tourneys? I mean, I’m mildly interested but I think why these teams don’t have better talent is due to the grind of the NBA season plus the playoffs. It seems like most of those guys wanna rest their bodies for the upcoming season plus the interest seems like it’s just not there for the elite players. That’s why we usually do terrible in FIBA play imo. But the Olympics….that’s a whole different ball game. The rest of the world has definitely caught up to us but if we field our “top” talent, we’ll always be tough to beat.

With such a roster of SG's and forwards they couldn't get any top-class playmakers (neither Iverson, nor Marbury could organize the team offence) and Centers (Duncan is much more PF than C). When all these young guys want to do is crossover dribble shoot 3's and dunk (no ball movement or defense )the future is bleak in international competition.

no one is making the Olympic team from that team except maybe Ant… and that’s a stretch if KD, Lebron Tatum, Kawhi, Booker Mitchell PG play even he might not make it. Now imagine the best player on the team who lost to the champs by 2 barely making if not missing the actual Olympic cuts….

On May 30, 1992, the United Nations Security Council passed UN SCR 757. It banned all international trade, scientific and technical cooperation, sports and cultural exchanges, air travel, and travel of government officials from the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. Federal Republic of Yugoslavia did not participate until 1998 ,she won the first place and then in 2002 again

The olympic USA team looks like the 1st tier team while the WC team is 2nd and 3rd tier team. As long as USA thinks WC as low priority, they will loose more.

The problem started when the nba became a European, 3 point shooting, zone defense playing league. This feed into the slow, no defense, no athleticism playing European players hand.
