Dirk literally beat a super team without no legit number 2 co-star. Ok, he had a solid supporting cast with Terry, Tyson Chandler anchoring the defense and what was left of Jason Kidd running the point, but Dirk as a lone superstar, had arguably the greatest playoff run to a championship in NBA history.

That 2011 Finals is one of my favorite ones to go back and watch. Amazing what Dirk did that year. Very chilling once the final buzzer sounded, he got over the scores table and went to the tunnel to have his personal moment knowing his life was never going to be the same ever again and how it wasnt necessary to share a “sportsmanship encounter” with James and Wade.
As a Lebron fan I actually don’t think Lebron is the player he is today with the legacy he has if 2011 didn’t happen. I’ve always liked Dirk and I’m glad he was able to get that ring even if he got it against Wade and Bron.
I don't think a lot of people even know how real this beef actually was. I still remember how intense a lot of the regular season games between the Mavs and Heat were, and even with LeBron being there, it was usually Wade who stepped up for the Heat in those games (not all the time, but it was a regular thing).
I sure didn't until I watched this. I'm a pretty casual BB fan but I knew '11 was a rematch because I make sure to catch the playoffs every year. Now I understand the fire Dirk played with in that series so much better.
When Nowitzki beat the LeBron, Wade and Bosh-led Heat in their prime in the 2011 NBA Finals with injuries, fever and no other stars, it was a real treat. The 2010-2011 season's Mavs championship ring value is one of the best in history.

Dirk's ring in 2011 was the most meaningful NBA championship run in the 21st century. He got the last laugh over the superteam Heat after losing in 2006.

I’ve met and chatted with Dirk and have always heard of how thoughtful and sensitive he was about his career. There’s a reason Dallas loves Dirk, they named a street fro him and erected a huge statue for him. That 2011 Championship goes down as a Top 5 Championship run of all time. Sure, Miami and Wade have 3, but that one of Dirk’s will always be remembered as such, greatness.
It's up there with Cavs-Warriors 2016. I might be in the minority as a Heat fan, but for me, 2014 felt far worse. I can feel happy for Dirk & company earning their ring in a hard-fought series, but the Heat getting completely annihilated by the Spurs in the last three games of the 2014 Finals was such a bitter end to the greatest era in franchise history. But so it goes in sports
Me being a Heat fan, I must say I have the utmost respect for Dirk. I thought we were going to run through the Mavs in 2011. Damn was I wrong. Mocking Dirk didn’t work out at all.

@@clarencebell1101 I think it was mostly because Lebron wasn't playing so hot. Pierce gave him fits in the ECSF. Meanwhile, Dirk was red hot. Just one of those things you had to see to believe. As a Lakers fan on 2011, the Mavs deserve 2 NBA rings for the 2011 NBA season. Dirk did something what Jordan never did and that is win an NBA championship as the only all star in that squad and without your 2nd best scorer in the NBA Finals who had to face a super team in their primes.

This is satisfying professional beef. Two legendary competitors who just so happened to get in each other’s way. Nothing too personal or out of bounds. The closest thing was the mocking Dirk’s illness but even that was fairly tame goofing around. Both sides come out looking good in the end.
If you're a Mavs fan, you remember every part of this beef. Probably the same if you're a Heat fan. I'm not sure the average hoops fan did, but this was a cool video to back & recount the memories. Didn't know Wade had the Finals record for Free Throw attempts, but it makes sense. You still can't convince me the Mavs weren't cheated in '06. That was David Stern retaliating against Mark Cuban for being so public about NBA officiating in the early 2000s.
Damn you hit it right on head. I forgot Cuban was criticizing David Stern and the officiating. In 06 series I was in awe on how much calls Miami was getting. Thanks for bringing this up bro
Cuban hired an investigator to look into the 06 Finals, and was told there were grounds for a lawsuit. He ultimately decided against it knowing it could destroy the league.
Anyone who lived in Dallas can tell you Dwayne Wade was one of the most hated men in the D. This rivalry might not have gotten a lot of national attention, but it was very real out here
Since they didn’t cover it here, 2007 was injury plagued for the heat and while they got mostly healthy for the playoffs, were swept by the Bulls. Missed the playoffs in 08 because Wade got injured, Shaq traded away. 2009 and 2010 for the heat was just Wade on his own getting the team to a lower seed while playing great. Lost in 7 to the hawks then swept by Boston.
I loved that 2011 team. A classic tale of old timers who suffered numerous heartbreaks & setbacks, now in their waning years, banding together to shoot their last shot at glory...and pulling it off in the most shocking way! Dirk was on a mission that season, eliminating teams they had no business beating.
Man, I was a new basketball fan in the early 2000's, and the 2006 Finals were one the first that really hooked me. By the end of that thing, I was desperately rooting for the Mavericks, if only because it started feeling rigged with all the free throws! Seriously, watching those games start to finish, it felt like all Wade had to do was throw himself in the lane & he'd get 2 shots. It was maddening! I've never seen anything so frustrating, and I can only imagine how it felt being on the court & wondering "wtf am I supposed to do then?!"
Every time someone has this take which is basically every mavs fan ever I cringe. If you actually watched that series like you say you'd know the mavs were beating wade up almost every drive to the rim. Atleast 95% of the foul calls were obviously fouls. If you actually watch the games and look at the plays instead of the numbers, you'd see he should have gotten those fouls. the mavs could not defend wade straight up and so they fouled him on almost every drive.
@@Rageinggames1 BS. The Mavs blew out the Heat in the first two games. And then magically, every foul gets called whenever Wade touches the ball. He broke the record for FTs attempted ever in a playoff series despite not even needing a 7th game.

The 2011 championship makes up for every Dallas meltdown in the 2000s. Also one of the few titles that weighs a LOT more than some other multiple title teams.

Let's be real. Shaq always got away with offensive fouls, and when that wasn't enough, the league gave Wade all kinds of phantom fouls this series. You're vid emphasizes the one at the end of the game, but it was way worse than that. Mavs got robbed like many teams going against marketable superstars get robbed. Wade's comments about leadership probably did steel Dirk's long term resolve. Watching him beat Lebron and Wade was pretty gratifying at the time because of how they conducted themselves in that series
Shaq got mauled every time he got the ball, if they called fouls on guys guarding Shaq like they called on everybody else Shaq would be going to the line more than any player in NBA history.
Calls Wade was getting in 2006 was insane, literally anyone coming close to him at all, I used to joke with my dad calling fouls before they even happen, never seen anything like that before.
Exactly. And I believe there were at least two games in that series where Dwyane Wade had more free throws by himself than the Dallas Mavericks had as an entire team
It says a lot about Dirk that all the comments here (at least those that I managed to read!) are centered around him...one of a kind player but more importantly a class act who was humble and stayed loyal to Dallas even though he had every excuse to leave..his one championship is worth 10 of those won by superteams

it was so lovely seeing the best thing to happen to our team end like that. i just wish we can do something with luka. dirk had so much undervalued key pieces BUT also was so crucial himself! edit: dirk literally changed the way lebron and wade played the seasons after.
I said it the and I'll say it now. Tyson Chandler was the center piece and the reason Dallas won that championship. What Dallas always lacked was defence. Tyson's defensive play rubbed off on all his teammates, and set a tone. After they let him walk, didn't surprise me it was back to score score score, play no defense and hope we win.
As a German kid, when I grew up and played BB Dirk was like this mysterious legend. That there is this tall, lanky, german guy who is playing in the NBA. Playing with the giants of BB in America. Taller than any of us and an exceptional shooter. We never saw any games because the YT wasn't a thing. There was no local club we could go to and the only thing on TV was soccar. Just pictures and posters in magazines and from that we tried to mimic the fade away. The only time we saw him on TV was for an AD for a specific german bank, which was funny because at this time only we as BB kids knew who he was. But know being able to rewatch everything what I missed of this mans career is like a wonder to me. Glad BB found me.

I think this is one of the only beef history videos with absolutely zero footage of either player doing something to each other (not even yelling at each other) on the court. Two of the most mature stars of their time, both realized they would gain absolutely nothing by bringing beef to the court instead of relegating it to sensastionalist media crap and locker room trash talk
"Beef is not a clean source of energy but it is a good one." *chef's kiss* Dirk winning his by taking one away from the Miami super team was legendary.
Never forget that in a single season Dirk's Mavs beat the Blazers, swept Kobe's Lakers who were looking for a threepeat and beat a Young OKC that had 3 future MVP's to finally get his Ring 🐐
Dirk is a true legend that’s why the Mavs got a statue for him. He made it okay for a big 7 footer to step out shoot 3s and not be in the paint all game. He single handily molded the game for modern 7 footers. People often forget that. Man I wish I could have seen Dirk play in todays NBA his stats would be insane. All respects to KAT but DIRK is the best 7 foot shooter of all time.
2011 was the best finals IMO. Dirk IS Dallas. He overcame everything. He didn't abandon ship. Lebron and Wade tried to clown him and got chumped. Was golden watching lil JJ Barea lock up 6'9 Lebron in the clutch lol

Another excellent video, as always, by Secret Base. This Beef History video featuring Dwyane Wade vs. Dirk Nowitzki was very entertaining and interesting.
So happy to see more and more attention getting drawn to the terrible officiating in 2006. Tim Donaghy is on record calling that series rigged and it's obvious af to anyone who actually sat down and watched it. If Dirk had never had 2011, that would've destroyed his legacy.
Shaq does not get enough credit for Miami's success. The guy shows up and the Heat go from being bums to being contenders. Shaq was the runner up for the regular season MVP award not Dwyane, and Wade only got the finals MVP because the refs gave him every call imaginable
Honestly their beef is so good because of their stark contrast of one another as well, dirk is a tall skillful shooter, wade is smaller athletic ultimate slashing guard, one plays for glitzy Miami the other plays for an all American Texas city Dallas, one is fro Europe the other Chicago, hell even down to their contrasting uniforms and skin tone (not making it racist just noticing contrast) their career trajectories we're even opposite of each other. it's a fantastic chapter in nba history about the time that damn whiteboy from the blue team beat my heat.😂 it's like they're two sides of the same coin now it's honestly really Cool to have lives through it an look back on it like this.
Dirk and the 2011 Mavericks probably the NBA's best storyline ever, maybe even in all sports, probably only one that surpasses it would be the 2007 Giants, it's amazing how a supporting cast and star of mostly ringless veterans finally pushed through against all odds to delay the superteam era against "Not 1, Not 2, But 7" team to cap it off
1. fc kaiserslautern 1998. you wont find a better story including the beef between otto rehagel and the bayern frontoffice who released him before kaiserslautern picked him up. sorry that mavs team and their story is boring compared to that.
I'll never forget Wade and LeBron mocking Dirk for being ill by pretending to caugh and then Dirk going and schooling the Miami super team winning a ring in the process.
wade outplayed dirk in that finals, I guess thunder could have trash talked them all they want, bc they own them, they swept them a year later, and spared the embarrassment
That 2011 was such a juxtaposition of teams. One was three stars with the most barebones, bargain basement support I’ve seen in the finals, and the other was a single star with one of the best supporting casts I’ve seen.
Surprised this didn’t mention they’re gonna be in the same HOF class. And too many videos/stories about Wade’s career just skip from 06 to The Decision, they should’ve talked more about how highly rated DWade was at that time even if the Heat were bad to partially explain why The Decision was so big, and further demonstrate how big an accomplishment 2011 was for Dirk.
Dirk was then and still is one of my all-time favorite players. There's been a lot of great players who the playoffs made them Legends dirk would still be an all-time great without a ring, but with one and winning the way that 2011 team makes him a lot more revered, i was happy for him when he got that there's certain guys people root for even if he's not on your team and Dirk was one of them..
See, this is exactly what no one is talking about. Everyone gave flak about how the Heat were getting so many calls during that Finals series. But no one talks about how the Mavs were choking and not like they weren't known for not choking before. Dirk was literally being called out by the media too because he was really inconsistent during that series but people will only keep on looking at the free throws disparity and not Dirk choking on the 4th quarter during game 3, Dirk having an "off-night" during Game 4 (will be called choking nowadays). The game 5 clutch call was debatable and even more so in today's game, calls like that would even be normal today. Hell some even get away with less. Players drawing many fouls would eventually be seen normal like in today's game and there wouldn't be as much crying. That being said, I am glad Dirk would get his redemption for a championship after multiple straight seasons of Dallas' playoffs meltdowns and win a special one in 2011.

That is why I don't follow the NBA since Kobes retirement. It got dull and boring that the NBA had to make rule changes in order for players to help score more easier.
I know that and it doesn’t change what I’ve stated in any degree cause they still had in my opinion the most challenging sequence to achieve it. I’m not going to enter apart from dirk and chandler they were all way past their prime.
@guilhermelemes7490 Kidd was 38 years old, definitely beyond his prime, but still a really good player. Kidd was always known most for his passing, defense, and legendary craftiness... Well he led all players in the 2011 playoffs in Assists and Steals, so it's safe to say he was still really good at passing and on defense, and his craftiness only improved with age, as evidenced by the backcourts they triumphed over. Dirk was 32, Terry was 33, Marion was 32, and Chandler was 28... 32-33 years old is not that old in the NBA, many players play at a very high level at that age, or sometimes even the highest level of their careers at age 32-33. Maybe athletically they weren't what they were at age 25, but most of that can be offset with the extra years of playoff experience.
Also worth noting that Dirk was amazing in the 2006 playoffs before the Finals and purely spectacular in the 2009 playoffs. He was a great playoff performer with one bad series and one bad moment.
Anyone who thinks Dwyane Wade got too many calls haven't watched him play in his prime. Dude literally did not care about his body. He was going straight to the paint and taking contact like no one in the league at that time.

My favorite chips in the modern era? Dirk's 2011 chip and Spurs' 2014 chip. Both wanted revenge....at the expense of LBJ and Wade, ironically.

This was also before the Donahy scandal broke.
They screwed the Mavs over royally.

Every time someone has this take which is basically every mavs fan ever I cringe. If you actually watched that series like you say you'd know the mavs were beating wade up almost every drive to the rim. Atleast 95% of the foul calls were obviously fouls. Europe the other Chicago, hell even down to their contrasting uniforms and skin tone (not making it racist just noticing contrast) their career trajectories we're even opposite of each other. it's a fantastic chapter in nba history about the time that damn whiteboy from the blue team beat my heat.😂 it's like they're two sides of the same coin now it's honestly really
Cool to have lives through it an look back on it like this.
2011 should go down as the single most impressive title run made by a superstar player ever. So many people underestimate how great Dirk really was.
I'll never forget Wade and LeBron mocking Dirk for being ill by pretending to caugh and then Dirk going and schooling the Miami super team winning a ring in the process.
Everybody talking tough while they up
wade outplayed dirk in that finals, I guess thunder could have trash talked them all they want, bc they own them, they swept them a year later, and spared the embarrassment
A day when a Beef History Video is getting uplaoded, its a good day.
Dirk winning the championship after Dwayne and Lebron mocking and belittling him was the ultimate revenge. Who says Karma isn't real?
As a Wade fan, it was definitely distasteful and was hard for me to want him to win... I bet he'd take that clip back cause Dirk took that personal
And now we got Luka taking out the #1 seed Suns after Devin Booker mocking them. These Euro stars don't mess around 😆
That 2011 was such a juxtaposition of teams. One was three stars with the most barebones, bargain basement support I’ve seen in the finals, and the other was a single star with one of the best supporting casts I’ve seen.
Dirk has probably long forgotten and moved past the mocking coughs. But LeBron and Wade will never forget them.
I heard Dirk still sends cough drops by mail to Lebron and Wade during christmas?
“Everybody acting tough when they up!”
Wow. I never knew about this beef. And you did such a great job of in depth analysis. Immediate sub! 👏🏽
Wade was so good in that 2011 series. I’m still pissed Bron choked that one away.
I needed this man
Dirk earned everything. I’m a Heat Fan.

Dirks 2011 is the hardest title run of all time by far and there is no comparison. 1st round Blazzers(Aldridge/Roy/Batum), 2nd round champ Lakers( Mamba/Gasol), 3rd round Thunder (KD, Westbrook,James,Ibaka), Finals Heat big 3. Without another star he defeated a combine 7 hall of famers. And it is very sad that we don’t have this type of beef in the nba anymore cause everyone is now is all about being friends camping kumbaya.
Holy crap. I was 12 in 2006 and never knew D Wade and Dirk had beef. This'll be an interesting one.
If Dwyane Wade isn't playing a future HOF/Basketball Mount Rushmore player, he gets bounced before the conference finals
Bullshit
