  • Microsoft Mike (previously known as Mark Lund) was one of the most "natural" sounding voices for Microsoft from the Windows 9x to Windows XP years besides Microsoft Sam.
This year, I discovered the earliest version of Microsoft Mike (Mark Lund) found in a video by Jake Gross called "Speech Synthesis Demonstration CD". Watch here. [ • Speech Synthesis Demon... ]
The file called "track76f" was found in the "wave" folder in a zip file called "SpeechCD", and originated in the "Speech Synthesis CD-ROM" page on Internet Archive. Visit here. [archive.org/details/speech-cd]
Fun Fact: This is the default voice used for "‪@TheFormidableRobot‬" channel when narrating random Creepypasta stories, and also used for this channel when talking about random topics and other problems.
Anyway, you can download the L&H and Microsoft voices here.

I am glad the master WAV files for the speech synthesis CD that were sitting on my hard drive all these years and fairly recently discovered out of pure boredom are getting put to good use. In my opinion, the master's thesis that these are part of is an interesting read if you are ever curious about how speech synthesis works. This is actually what really got me interested in understanding speech synthesis technology at a deeper level, and I am glad I preserved a high quality copy of it.
For anyone who is curious as to how I got this, I downloaded a bunch of text to speech engines several years ago, and Mikropuhe 5.1 (a Finnish speech synthesizer) was included among them. This master's thesis was included as bonus content with that particular engine.

Would you happen to know if any versions of Lucent Technologies' text-to-speech programs still happen to exist? It seems like the TTS program was shuttered when the company downsized in 2002, and since the program was website-based, it doesn't seem like any archived versions of the website exist in a functional state. I ask because I've heard anecdotally that the announcement VOX for the game _Half-Life_ (1998) likely used the "Big Man" voice parameter from the program, and I wanted to confirm it for myself.
I've also heard that the voice can be replicated in the Watson and FlexTalk SAPI release TTS programs, but can't figure out how to verify it for myself.
