So refreshing to see a review of something I can actually get 😉. I live 3 miles from the distillery and they do a great tour and tasting. Sipping along with the Seattle Kraken edition of the standard single malt. You nailed the flavor notes 👍
I like these Flight Fights. Short, sweet and to the point. Nicely done Peter. 🥃 I have not tried the single cask bottlings. Of the remaining three, the standard release is my preferred expression. ISC stands for Independent Stave Company out of Lebanon MO. I believe "5 Malt Barley" refers to the five different barley varieties in the mash bill.
I had a hunch the 5 malt barley was 5 different types. They use a bunch of different barley types in their whiskey. So that wouldn't surprise me. Thanks. Cheers!
YAAAAASSS!!!! I live a little north of Seattle and I’m definitely into Westland! The Garryana 5th Edition is my favorite of what I’ve tried (they are now on 7th edition). I also have a Single Cask that was aged in an ex rye cask that is very interesting in a fresh yet spicy kinda way. I’m always on the lookout for their single casks and the Outlook Range releases are usually well worth the money. Westland does wonderful things!!
I agree. They do wonderful things. I have the 7th edition ordered along with the 1st edition of the Solum. I'm looking forward to trying them once I get back from a 10 day camping/kayaking/fishing/hiking trip up on the Mogollon rim in Arizona. I ordered them before I left and didn't realize that the order was going to be shipped while I was gone. So I'll have some presents waiting for me when I get home. I'm a big fan of Westland!
@@whiskeyisajourney Nice treat to come home to!! I did a tasting of the Outpost Range at the distillery and the Garryana 7th Edition lacks the peaty touch that the 5th Edition had. The Solum 1st Edition is made with Pacific Northwest peat and is a much different take on peated malt. My favorite of the range, at that tasting, actually ended up being the Colere 2nd Edition which really surprised me.
Great roundup! I've had some Westland, but all samples from barrel picks. I will have to seek out a pour of the Gurryana, as that sounds the most interesting to me out of that line up. The future is looking pretty bright for American Single Malt.
These sound interesting, I'll have to give one a try. The Garryanna is $200 in my area which is very high for an ASM so I'll probably stick with their American single oak.
Their outpost range offerings are too expensive so I don't blame you for not wanting to spend that much. Their standard American single malt is a good one to stick with at a less expensive price tag. Cheers!
I had the core line Sherry matured one and it was like a young brash Macallan to me. Nice for when you’re in the mood for it. I had a single cask that was a delightful chocolate bomb. I’m lucky that my local Total Wine has these and that a lot of the patrons don’t buy it. I can wait and get it on discount for at least 25% off retail.
Would love to get your thoughts on the newest offering in the outpost range, Solum. This is using peat sourced from Washington (first American-sourced peat). It is quite a different flavor than your traditional Scottish peat and makes for a very unique experience. Copperworks out of Seattle also has an offering with this Washington-sourced peat. I have had the Copperworks one but have yet to try the Westland one (which has received quite a bit of high praise).
I'm out on a 10 day vacation, but before I left I ordered the Solum and Garryana 7th edition. They will be waiting for me when I get back home. I'm looking forward to trying them. I'll check back into this post or find a way to get it onto the channel. Cheers!
Oh wow sounds amazing! I've just had their standard one, I am guessing the single casks are only available from the distillery, sadly Ohio doesn't make it easy to ship alcohol. What is the name/brand of the lids you use?
I got lucky and saw a single cask at Total Wine and More, but the other one I ordered from their sight and had it shipped to AZ through Reserve Bar. I picked up the glass lids from Cairn Craft. I have the glass lids and the wood lids. The glass lids have numeral engravings on the top and the wood lids have carved circles to indicate the number.
Westland blew me away. Had it for the firsr time early this year. For me, the base release is super dense. I get a lot of orchard fruit. Don't pick up the peat nott.

Thanks. I just got back from a trip and I have the new 1st edition Solum and the Garryana 7th edition in a box yelling at me to open them. Cheers!

Lucky enough to get Westland’s bottles in SoCal. Garryana is unreal and finally had a chance to pick up a bottle of Solum. Also fantastic.
I have not had a bad bottle from them yet. Cheers!
Thanks for another great video, Peter! I’ve never tried American single malt. Maybe I’ll add it to the list for this summer. Thanks!
I think Westland is a good start if you have not had one yet.

100% agree with that statement. I am really looking forward to the next few years. It can only get better with time.

I saw some single cask offerings at total wine a while ago, but nothing recently. I'm a little bummed about that.

Also I’m happy the backing track is gone. Peter’s voice and how he speaks doesn’t need the backing track.
I enjoy their standard release. Haven't tried the others.
Their standard release is very enjoyable. I can see this being a "daily drinker".
ISC are barrel producers in Kentucky
Thanks for letting me know. I appreciate it. Cheers!

My sister got in my head. Now I can't not find it. It's subtle that I find it every time now.
Only have seen the standard release in my area for $104
$104! Ouch. Where are you located? Canada?
