Because of this channel I've been drinking more whiskey than ever before. As I just don't get wasted like I did in my 20s. Now 31 I'm starting to enjoy what's in my glass. Just bought Glenlivet 15 and yes I can really taste banana bread.
My favorite combo is savory, salty, sweet and chocolate notes with peat such as the Bunnahabhain Moine Olorroso Single Malts. It sounds like the Westland Garryana hits also those notes but without the peat. FYI, both John and Lazarus are referred to as "the one Jesus loved" or the “beloved disciple” (John 11:36).
Whiskey blows my mind how everything is almost blueprint yet Soo many flavours. It's all about that Barrell...yet every other step can change things...I thought it was much simpler...thanks to you guys and well STILL IT. without him I wouldn't be here.
The Garryana wood is protected and can't be harvested until nature falls the trees and then you have to have a gov't agent with you to determine it was natural, hence the rarity of the wood to be available to craft the casks. That blah blah aside, I totally agree with Rex and his passion for this bottle, just amazing! So happy you had a chance to review and share your thoughts!
That may be true is some areas around Puget Sound, but it is not true in Oregon. Rogue for example is making their own barrels from Garry oak grown near Newport, OR.

Actually Garryana oak is used in quite a few whiskeys up here in the NW. There is only one barrel maker, south of Portland the story is interesting. But all of Eastside's distilling whiskeys, some of Mcminnimans distilling, and Trails end bourbon are a few that come to mind.
Garryana is magical stuff, indeed! I was lucky enough to get to taste it at Distill America XI, and was transfixed. I can't wait until this year's version comes out. Hopefully my Total Wine will get it...
I had an earlier Spirit Hound single malt bottling and it was brown sugar all the way, simple but pleasant. They also make gin and stuff I haven't tried yet.
Y’all need to make a trip out here to Seattle and do an event at Westland. A symposium or something. The Balcones guys were there doing something similar for their Peat Week, but I unfortunately couldn’t go.
Have you guys ever sampled or reviewed South African Whiskey? I would love to see a review on Baines! Love the channel. My collection is growing steadily.
Westland sources their peated barley from highland, so it would be more like Balvenie and less Islay peat. But in a couple of years they will have a Washington peat smoked Washington grown barley.
I'm not a huge fan of the various Islay cults... but Bull Run and Westland make me want to start a NW Whiskey Cult... (and McCarthy's, and Westward, and so many others)
Westland cannot even cut down down this species of native oak since it is protected , they are paying experts to source mislabeled stock of "cedar" just to make new cooperage. In a way it is like Japanese Mizunara oak but luckly doesn't need 20 years of aging to make the desired effect. It is a really awesome whisky from a great distillery and I highly recommend anyone that can to take the distillery tour to do so. Cheers
I doubt this. Particular trees inside city limits or protected areas might be off limits, but Oregon Oak in general is plentiful. Because it warps more than other oaks it usually isnt used for more than firewood, but Westland shouldn't have any trouble buying barrel staves since it is being used for wine barrels.
You cannot cut down Garry Oak, it has to fall down naturally. You can look it up. In 2016 they produced 2500 bottles, in 2017 they did 2600, 2018 they did 1638. Their supply ran so low they couldnt replicate as much.

If you are lucky enough to find the 16, 17, 18 of westland, they are all incredibly different.
I believe Eastside Distilling in Oregon is using Oregon White Oak as well. Probably was doing it first. Oregon!
It is definitely an Oregon thing now. Bull Run and Burnside Distilling use garryana too, but McCarthy's was probably first.

I was smart enough to buy 3 of each edition of Garryana. 2016 had the most peat, 2017 and no peat, and 2018 was right in the middle

Spirit Hound is great. They'll serve you a flight from several barrels if you visit the distillery in Lyons (like 'lions')

Spirit Hound is really really great. It's a necessary stop on the way to Estes Park.

I think bottles are only available at the distillery. They dont have enough volume yet to support distribution.
