I love how when I watched this as a child and thought how the father was such a tool. Rewatching it, the Dad may not understood Anarchy, but he understood that Steve-o's rebellion is just a phase in his life like when the father was young and went to Woodstock. One of the greatest coming to age films.
I must say this movie is a classic about under examined youth. It really resonated with me. I grew up in a somewhat small town with not a lot going on for a teenager. Similar to the characters and people living in SLC. Not a lot going on. So, the young and spirited youth try to scream themselves into existence. It's about identity, and I empathize. Saw this as an early teenager and before I knew it I was sporting a a mohawk in my small town!
When I first watched this I thought this scene was funny. But after my second go watching the movie I realized in reality the father is 100% telling him the truth and was right. It was all an act and he was going through a phase. That's the whole point of the movie. All his rants, all his so called wisdom, was all BS and his dad knew it. Which made him a good father letting him go through this phase.
On the DVD Commentary Matthew Lillard said he liked this scene in the script but asked Merendino if he could improv some new material while the cameras were rolling. About 75% of his lines from this scene arent in the script. He just got into character and went to town. He made this film.
Except when you just watch random clips on the yt you pick up on... how the same it is. The same message delivered the samely by the same kid. I mean, yeah, I get it, punk is predictable conformist boring pablum and he's driving that home. But "a punk is a 1:33 broken record ksh record ksh record ksh record for an hour and a half" isn't a great sell. It's like listening to "Brainwash" - Flipper. In COLOUR!
Stevo’s parents are former hippies and divorced. But they are proud of their youthful endeavors. However, Stevo is revolted by what he perceives as their "selling out" by becoming affluent Reagan Republicans, which they lamely try to justify.
Everyone goes through teenaged angst and thinks they know everything. You cringe at what you were like when you had no life experience, then cringe at how you come across to your own kids as a parent, because all teenagers think you are somehow out of touch with modern times. There is nothing glamorous about a punk lifestyle. You've got to live your life and everything, but even having lived through post-punk and doing some things, I am surprised all of my friends and I are still alive, albeit injured as shit from days of pounding beers and gaining back problems.
The only thing I found that kept my hawk higher than eight inches was wood glue.... I know it's fake, but is there anything that sets a two foot hawk and still flails like a damn floppy noodle on your head?
"Rebelling" in an upper middle class family living on the East bench of Salt Lake with every opportunity and convenience of life? I guess some people are just bored.
1) These are fictional characters you fucking slug 2) If you haven't lived as a mormon or been excommunicated by your own family over a band, then shut the fuck up you entitled twat.
@@n1nj4sp4rt4n EXACTLY - he is conscious of the unethical nature of the system that provided him with privilege and isn't thrilled about it. It's like the son of plantation owner inherits his dad's plantation and immediately sets all his slaves free or starts paying them wages. It won't make sense to an economist but it makes perfect sense to human beings.
But it's actually the honest representation of the punk scene: Heroine Bob and Steve-o. One coming from trash getting his anger out; The other rich with every opportunity wanting to burn it all out of rebellion. My brother started a punk band with his best friend. They took me along with them. All the kid's were like this. Even my brother and his best friend. My brother and I came from not so good family. I remember a week my mother not paying the electrical bill or heating up a pot of water on the stove for a bath. Meanwhile my brother's best friend came from a rich family. His mother was literally our landlord at one point (btw she kicked us out of there for not paying rent lol).
Hot take: All top leaders of any successful rebellion came from middle class or richer family, that paid for the education that makes them successful leaders. Washington, Robespierre, Marx, Engels, Lenin, Mao, Castro, Guevarra all had privileged childhood Even freaking Bin Laden was a rich kid of a billionaire.
Nobody in Harvard Square would have been baffled, y' square. The only thing they'd have been baffled about in 1995 would have been "why's this poseur still look like this in 1995?"

Now that I'm older I have a new perspective on this movie. Stevo makes me cringe, not his parents. It's the same stupid bullshit every "non-conformist" punk spews.
"I didn't sell out son , I bought in. Keep that in mind." lol
Just like Steve-o does in the end. "That kid is gonna make one hell of a lawyer."
I think about this quote often

me too and at the end of the movie it sort of plays on that
I didn't sell out, I bought in.
best line
fucking legend
I love the accepting tap Stevo gives his dad after he says that.
Low key his jacket goes hard. Whoever in charge of wardrobe did good.

True man
You can tell your kids life is tough.
But you can't explain how tough it is.
Real shit man, so true.
complete and utter bullshit. Exactly what pro-capitalist, greedy, machiavellian douchebag sell-outs say.
this movie should be watched by every radical ( communist Anarchist etc). It does a great job at showing the short side of this type of thinking.
Matthew is perfect for this role.
"It's difficult dear" 😆😆
Lolll
3 Ideologies in one room.
Aaa
Mom: Liberal (probably)
Dad: Conservative lite
Steve: Anarchist
Christopher McDonald is an underrated comedic genius.
Facts. He's an actual actor too. And by that I mean a good one. Lets face it, Lillard is Lillard.
Yes!
Shooter McGavin borrows heavily from this guy
Shoota!
Instead of going to university, Stevo went on to become a detective along with his K9 Unit.
He did though. And did really well there.
The little signs he keeps giving the camera is hilarious and i felt it
This scene is one of my top favorites in the movie! Really good about the give and take. The dialogue was absolutely spot on!
This needs a sequel where Stevo has this talk with his millenials/Gen Z kids.
There is a sequel
There is a horrible sequel
@@birdgizzard and it is absolutely awful
Nah lol. This movie needs to stay as it is
These parents are much better then mine
I never had respect from anyone in my so called family
It’s funny how you can clearly tell that’s a rubber Mohawk
Well, I'm not wearing my glasses so I didn't pick up on that, but I did think... is that how they did them in Utah? Bleah.
This movie is a classic. Fucking loved every second of it

Crazy to think he’s like 29 years old here and that’s how old I am was 7 or 8 when this movie came out
I was 2
He’s 52 now
I wasn’t even born
HELLO, GENTS, EVEN AT 53 YEARS OLD, I'M STILL A PUNK ROCKER OUTFIT AND ALL,......NO STUPID DRUGS OR DUMB ALCOHOL JUNK,......MARIUS(PUNK RULES).

God I love this clip
Matthew is good in this. Hilarious.

"He's a son of a bitch." Nice self-own there, Stevo's mom!
This film is like the American version of Human Traffick (British movie but instead of Punk it's rave culture and Ecstasy).
"I'm baffled." lmao
Stevo’s parents are former hippies and divorced. But they are proud of their youthful endeavors. However, Stevo is revolted by what he perceives as their "selling out" by becoming affluent Reagan Republicans, which they lamely try to justify.
And he does the same thing in the end
I Think of this movie is the sequel to Grease 2. This is who goose became and the boy he raised. I could do see it! 😂
3:20

I AM THE FUTURE
4.0 in DAMAGE
hOLY FUCK THIS SCENE HITS DIFFERENT SEEING IT AT 40 AS HIS DAD BASICALLY VS WHEN IT CAME OUT AND BEING HIM

Elmers glue and a clothes iron
Gelatine
My cousin and I were told by Jorge of The Casualties to use gelatine. You could bend your hair down and it would fly back up.
He'll never win the gold jacket with that kind of attitude 👉 (bang!)
