• Xavier: Renegade Angel...
A recreation of the phonebooth scene from Xavier Renegade Angel S1 Ep10. As I mention at the start of the video, this was a good scene to replicate to become familiar with facial mocap. I'm happy with this result for my first attempt but I need to work on expressiveness moving forward.
Rendered in UE5. The animation is a motion capture performance using a Rokoko smart suit II. The mocap data was cleaned up in Blender. The facial animation was made using the Faceit blender plugin
Xavier's model comes from an old contest that was hosted by the creators of Xavier. I upped the resolution of the model and changed a few things around. I originally updated his hair but i couldn't get it to have that classic Xavier look so I just ended up keeping his hair as is which is honestly the most jarring thing in the video lol
Frittata!

Dude, I am floored. I was one of the original directors/animators back in the day, but not this. Ep. 1 and 8. I'm so glad you uploaded a side by side because I saw the original video and really struggled to believe that wasn't just a rip of anim data on new models. Is it perfect? No but it's insanely close, and the thing about this show was that it was intentionally bad- Which, let me tell you, as an animator who was just starting out, that was a punch in the mouth! Anyone who thinks Xavier had good animation or that you're reaching for some impossibly lofty height with these recreations, needs to take a step back and look at what you have going on here.
1. Extremely similar acting in a mocap suit, which means you didn't even get to clean it up and refine it for better acting like we did after the fact. You must have studied the hell out of those moves.
2. Nearly identical camera angles and motion sometimes. Not easy! Probably did that with unreal engine's camera, which is even harder than what we used.
3. Nearly... perfect facial capture on those weird mouths? I wish I could tell you how bad the software we were using back then, was. We tried doing a voice to mouth animation trick, but it was awful and so we did nearly all of it by hand.
Oh yeah and each episode took about 6 weeks, start to finish. So we were rushed like crazy and tons of the purposely bad animation was a result of having zero time to fix it. The fact you recreated those problems *on purpose* with mocap performances, is crazy. Anyone from the team would be knocked over to see this kind of dedication. My hat goes off to you, wild man!
For proof of my involvement, heres an old reel from.. oof! 13 years ago.

I hope you've seen Xavier Jedi Master. He belongs in a galaxy far far away.
P.S. Good show. I like the bit where the dog ate the ketchup. That looked really realistic.
Xavier Renegade Angel is a rare masterpiece that is discovered to this day
Thank you for helping us appreciate the work put into both the original and the new!
Thank you for Xavier, i really hope (but impossible) that we have more one day !
@@fremenondesand3896 Xavier Jedi Master?
I prefer the surreal sunset and smeared textures of the original desert setting, since I think the dreamlike nature of Xavier's world is an important feature, but otherwise the recreation is excellent.
Making it be high noon in the scene does make sense as it's gunslinger's showdown with words.
@@diegodankquixote-wry3242 good point
The facial expressions to me seem to be a bit off as well, but in general this is pretty good
Also I love the facial expressions Xavier has in the original, I get that face is the hardest thing to animate so I get it, but yeah the original definitely fits better imo
Xavier is one of those superbosses in all adult cartoon shows.
@Harrish Romero as do they all, but his is like an aura of bad karma following his wake
@@christiangottsacker6932 And within that wake is a beauty of a woman sleeping waking up in a nightmare of an acid trip, and the only way to escape is by sleeping again in the manifested world of dreams.

Something to note when looking at the original is how all the shots look more “centered”, since in 2008 HD TV sets were still very new, so studios had in mind a “safe zone” on the edges, so the picture would still look nice on 4:3 TV sets of the time. Look at old recordings of TV news and you’ll see text cramped to the center, and many series of that time very often avoided shooting characters too far away from the edge.
I already knew this because of Defunctland. They changed the Disney Channel logo for the same reason.
Oh,yeah?! I recreated something called a thuritto. you don’t hear me bragging about it.
Idk man, i think this is pretty significant
@@harry2597 you are not better than me!!
Wait.. does it happen to be a burrito inside a burrito within the heart of that same burrito?
I heard you're a survivor. They're a dying breed.
As much as I absolutely love the recreation, it was definitely lacking some of the true expression Xavier would always have on his face throughout the shots
It's crazy how much better Xavier looks in your version. I don't agree with all the directing choices, like not using panning shots when the original did, character spacing in some shots, but there's also a lot you improved.
Is it better? I kind of like the vibe of lower poly shit.
@@theothertonydutch I perfer it too, but you have to appreciate the advancement of the model. In pretty much every way it's been "improved", when it comes to clarity anyway. That's where things get difficult because technically better isn't always actually better.
No way you said the original had dead eyes, if anything the eyes are way more expressive in the original. Look at 1:25.
@@TheRealFlamingNinja Yeah, I straight up am talking out my ass arn't I?
No way, the facial expressions are much better in the original.
It's an awesome way to view the same scene. I wouldn't really say one is better, because I think everything in the original was intentional, but it's so fun seeing the same moments done in slightly different, completely valid and very entertaining ways.
The low quality jankiness of the original has a lot of charm but I really like the new animations a lot
One of my favorite details about this scene is that Xavier actually swaps places with the evil version he made up.
It symbolizes shifts his perspective back to “I am not the bad guy.”, and shows us the mental gymnastics that he pulls off every time he questions if he is the bad guy or not.
I feel like they needed to be closer in your recreation when they go face-to-face
Otherwise, very well done!
As an enjoyer of the short series, i highly appreciated this recreation, and hope you plan on doing more with Xavier in the future. It’s really well done and I can tell you put a lot of effort into recreating it as close as possible
Exactly how a remaster should be just make what's good look better
aw if only the sky had a bit more color. splitting hairs at that point, amazing render
I completely forgot about this show. I remeber the first time I saw it… I couldn’t take my eyes off the screen that late night haha
You seriously killed this! I’m sure this took a TON of work
When I first saw your remaster it felt satisfying
Pfr would be proud
first off great effort with this.
However, Xavier is pretty much the ideal candidate for a demaster.
Even more blurry 240p resolution. Even more incomprehensible dialog that keeps me coming back.
Genius masterpiece that still baffles me now on.
Btw that dog that ate ketchup? Dead now.
This is awesome, a recreation of a show I love. My respects
Yup, this is indeed art
"you slumber, a cucumber" is a line that goes unnecessarily hard.
35 Years of technologicly and here arrive
amazing! thank you
Pretty cool to see something new in relation to XRA!
The newer on looks better and smoother than the original.
You slumber...ham
I think the remaster has better animation, but I like the original background environment and lighting
at first i thought this was going to be some wierd, unexplainable, and shitty video. but then i found out that it was actually pretty funny, and that i was also correct about the first part.
Ahh the sky was different, that's what bugged me
In your recreation now its obvious how their heads are tilted way too much back
I would love to see a remaster of the series released. Even more so if they made a new season like this
Man that looks like it must’ve taken a lot of work, great work! One thing to work on is the details of the eyes and facial expressions when they’re talking but that is a very minor nitpick
I never did understand what's "you slumber a cucumber" even means
Beautiful…
This was really well done
I think I prefer the original version of the argument at around 0:52, where the two Xaviers are really getting right into each other's faces and invading their personal spaces, whereas your version has them keep their distance.
"I'll be beauty. Will you be my beast?"
Keep up the good work!
Gotta say, while the fidelity is better in your remake, the faces and movements of the original are far more expressive
It's a hard comparison ngl, given how godly the original is
Incredible job!
i see this and i really would like to see a "visual update" of Xavier. maybe without any jpg backdrops to keep some feel of the original show. i also didnt realize from the previous video that the Xavier model was touched up! it looks nice.
Really great but you forgot to make them blink.
Do you think we could get _Succotash and The Bird in the morning_ reanimated at somepoint?
I feel like in the original there is a lot of expression in xaviers eyebrows to emphasize his talking manner, and its kinda lost in the recreation. Other than that pretty good.
Yeah this is fucking amazing still
the original have smoother animations but the recreation looks better visually
I hope you finish the scene!
C U C U M B E R S O U P
Some parts, the original was better. Some, yours were better.
Examples: I loved your face at "mouth-faucets".
Your camera work is much better. I especially love the shot from 0:30 to 0:38. The way it pans over just in time for the line to be spoken, but they are a bit too far from each other in most shots where it counts.
I could flip-flop about the general movements. The "might be better than me" is better in the original, but "I am better than me" looks better in yours.
Overall, for a first jab, very impressive.
The quality is great, but i did notice how the hands are a bit stiff in your remaster. Really great though.
amazing
so cool
What if an xra video game was made? I think that would be rad.
Did a good job but i love the original just cause it feels like the show
i like the collage of Ultra-realistic vs. well... Xavier. But i still prefer the original look. PS2 graphics just work for XRA, you know. still dope
these where very long two and a half minutes
Good job
this looks amazing, but a true xavier remaster would make the graphics look worse
Its not 1 to 1 but still pretty good
OG has very nice animations that look very natural but urs look like almost raw performance capture (gittery). Still not bad
The original had SOVL.
why does he sound like he is one of those AI sounds
Yeah, animation is not perfect, in some scenes it even changes the meaning. Like with cucumber, you changed it to just waving a finger, where in the original Xavier wanted to exaggerate the rhyme.
xavier was made to look bad its part of the comedy imo. great job though
can you do the whole series please and thanks?
It took a whole team months just to make a single episode, you can’t be serious…
Am a small channel so please like/comment/subscribe to help me out :)
Hey, i loved you video! Did you make the 3D model of Xavier? I'd love to download it if possible!
