When I went to school in Tonga, I had Chinese friends, white friends, Fijians and Indians. They all spoke fluent Tongan. Looking back, that was probably one of the coolest things about that experience.

My grandma is the opposite. Learning English was the only way to succeed was a common attitude from the People who moved and then came to live in NZ in 50s and 60s.
Matt L yea my grandpa refused to teach my mom apache as she was apache and the reason she refused is because growing up in the 60’s and 70’s she was taught by the boarding schools to only speak english and the only way tk be successful in life is to speak english and thats why my grandma didnt teach my mom apache cuz my grandma was taught to never speak her language

And those who say oh so do you know how to speak it but you can't. It's not because it's our fault, it's how society shaped our grandparents and parents to raise us. They just wanted the best for us. Many take for granted being able to speak their native tongue in New Zealand but it wasn't always that way. To be taken seriously you had to learn and adapt to the culture of the times. People take this for granted nowadays just speaking their native tongue and not having to be forced to learn and speak only English. I'm happy for them though.
