These guys just happened to be doing it for the Commander in Chief that day. It's very, very normal to have a few soldiers tasked to fetch and carry for superior officers on any given day. The theory being, this frees them to do the work that only they can do. The President was simply using his perogative as a superior officer. It's very, very, very normal.
And 100% guarantee you they loved it and felt proud doing it. They now have a cool story to tell their kids and grandkids about how they helped out the President of the United States.

From what ive heard of Marines, this is a complete honor, and also a simple task. Im not in the military, nor in great shape, and i could probably hold an umbrella up for an extended period of time. From what ive heard of Marines, this is a complete honor, and also a simple task. Im not in the military, nor in great shape, and i could probably hold an umbrella up for an extended period of time. The Marine Corps is about duty, service, sacrifice, honor, pride, tradition, and integrity. When the President calls for the Marines, no matter how small the job, the job gets done and with pride. If you have never served in the armed forces hold your judgement. 1st and foremost not everybody who serves in the military respects their President, and his policies but they must show respect. In no shape, form, or fashion is it disrespectful to not follow an order from the President when the order given is not even one you should follow. There is no form of standing at attention while holding an umbrella.
You may think it is being nice, respectful, or doing his DUTY, if you will… but it is not. I don't ask Marines to come home from war to hold umbrellas because it is easier then the job they had overseas… I thank them for making me safer cause they're men. Men don't hold umbrella's and only women ask for men to hold it for them. The President is confused and so aren't yourself. Our military deserves better than to have it's subordinates appear as servants for the higher officials.
