The tensioner failure is common on vehicles with a build date of 10/2012 or earlier. 2012 builds after October will have the revised tensioner; timing chains should be replaced around 120k on any car normally just not as big of an issue on a belt, the chain can still stretch. You missed a lot of other huge problems as well like water pump, the waste gate actuator, intake manifold (not major but still a normal issue.) High pressure fuel pump is a very rare failure. Other minor things to look for are old revision diverter valves (2011 and below.) Jerky DSG shifts aren't a definite sign the mechatronics are bad either. Sometimes you just confuse the computer on what it needs to do
Thanks for the feedback - I don't agree that timing chains should be replaced at 120 000km as part of normal maintenance - Preventative maintenance, Yes. Many cars running on the road without issues, these are just prone to fail on the G6 GTI. Tried highlighting how important FSH is on the gearbox and that you tread with caution, I love DSG's (when they work). I tried my best to highlight the Top 5 issues - our blog article covers everything you mentioned that we missed out. Hi Musa, sadly these common issue occur more often than one would like and many owners are simply unaware that even exist. That's why create the vids, the Golf 6 GTI is actually an awesome and reliable car if you keep your hand on it and do regular preventative maintenance as well, like replace the timing chain, tensioner and chain guides before the tensioner goes bust.
who did the work for you? I suggest taking it back to them. struggling to start can be fuel related and the rough idle can be timing related, timing can also point to the camshafts.
It depends on what you want out of the car. The ED35 is more powerful and has fewer issues, but the CDL engine is based off the old Golf 5 GTI platform with a bigger turbo, stronger internal and a better intercooler. If replace the timing chain on the G6 GTI and keep up with normal maintenance you will be fine. The EA888 engine in the G6 is much more fuel-efficient than the ED35, if that's something you care about.
Oh Yeah! The old 1.9tdi's are amazing, we love that engine and it's amazing diesel consumption. There's no free lunch with a high performance car, especially not a GTI!

lol He's definitely South African
You forgot Water Pump, intake manifold, and carbon buildup
Thank you. Solid advice
it's our pleasure.
Great vid. Is it worth it to buy a 2011 Mk6 GTI Manual with 142000km?
Yes, definitely. Just keep money aside for DSG repairs and replace the cam chain tensioner.
What is the price of doing the timing chain ?
What do you suggest if the timing chain is replaced but still struggle to start and has rough idle like diesel

No water pump problems like the mk7 or mk7.5?
No, the waterpump is not a common fault issue on the Golf 6 GTI.
Lmao broken timing chain was a huge expense my valves got bent :(
Unfortunately it's an expensive repair if the timing of your car goes out. What company did the repair for you and are you based in South Africa?
Does it get carbon build up as well cos if direct injection or is it port injected?
it's direct injection
is getting the edition 35 a better idea instead?
