Lyrics:
Mary was married with children
Had the perfect suburban life
Til her husband came clean with the help of Jim Beam
And confessed all his sins in one night
Said he'd fallen in love with a barmaid
Said she made him feel reckless and young
And when he got through, what else could she do
She just let that pony run
You do what you gotta do
You know what you know
You hang on til you can't hang on
And then you learn to let go
You get what you want sometimes
But when it's all said and done
You do what you gotta do
And then you let that pony run
Mary moved to West Virginia
After the shock wore off
She got a divorce and a chestnut horse
And a barn with an old hayloft
And sometimes she rides by the river
Says it makes her feel reckless and young
She closes her eyes and she holds on tight
And she lets that pony run

Even though this song is 30 years old it still sounds as good as it always has. It never lost its touch. Pam Tillis is really great
To all you women out there who were faithful, good wives but we're treated this way...stay true to yourselves
Thank you!!
"You hang on 'till you can't hang on..."
😭😭😭😭
You learn to let go
This is the first song that I ever remembered word for word all the way through. It's a comforting song and I love Pam Tillis.
I could so relate to this song. My ex confessed his sins one night & life was never the same. These classic country songs got me through.
In my case she didn't confess her sins I was just told that she made some decisions. I had to drag the word DIVORCE out of her. But I got the dogs and my Lawyer went so far as to name them in the divorce decree. So I got the Mustang I always wanted and "I let that pony run" fast forward to the present time I met a wonderful woman who I never would have met otherwise. Life only goes to shit if we are willing to let it happen. There's bad times in life, but the dogs or horses in our lives are always there for us. If you're lucky enough to have a great family to help you out like I did, you guessed it, life moves on.
Been there Done that.
Do what you gotta do!
sometimes one minute at a time.
Worst thing you could do going through a divorce is listening to slow country songs. Lol
@@jayr178 this was the only one I could. I had loved it as a teenager just for being a beautiful song...like most of her's were. Never had any idea back then how much it would mean to me down the road, but I think there's a legion of us that would love to thank her for it. Aside from this, I could listen to only classic rock or completely lose the lone shred of sanity I had left..so yes, I have to say I agree with you.
1992 wasn't long ago but how simpler the times Felt.
I know right. 1992 seems like yesterday bro. Where does the time go.
183 wasn't best lon whether Peace it either
Ay your the best mel tiIla's
Sure nougffs lol.
I been here alone ice he sty this parade bay why I not see me . An with me eat bleeding s love ore ya
So True!!
Have not heard this in awhile Pam - forgot how much I loved this song! Thank You! :-)
This album got me through a really horrific divorce when I was only 21. Guess what? You helped me grow up quick in a MARVELOUS way...🐢💖🎀💥
Was it back in 1993?
My mom used to play this when she picked me and my sister up from school she passed away and loved Pam tilling her music reminds me of her
Wanna get a drink later?
Wish i could learn to let go
Ahhhh when Country Music was good! Love her voice and songs! Way under-rated
FOESHOW
body ain't bad either!
It is still good
I love Pam !
2024 and still listening to this song. Pure Country Classic.
This woman is really beautiful. That dark hair really makes her eyes stand out. Those blue eyes remind me of the ocean. The way she sings can really reach down inside of someone and reach to their heart. She sure has a beautiful voice too. She inherited her dad's talent and used her own talent to make herself stand out. She is definitely one of a kind. She is really great
Wow you make a great point you make here, Hello how are you doing 👋👋👋👋
@@stevenbuck644 I 'm doing good. How about you?
@@shawnduncan5779 I’m fine, thanks, so where are you from??
@@stevenbuck644 Tucson, Arizona
@@shawnduncan5779 wow you lived in a very nice place, well I
Lived in Houston Texas, how long have you been in Arizona???
I am doing this song for my very last choir concert being in high school on May 7th. My choir teacher told us we could pick the song that we are gonna sing as a solo. I picked this song because I just love the song.
Wow. I needed to hear this amazing classic, to help inspire me to release a wondering eyed colt from my stable.
Pamela... Superior female vocalist. Often underrated. One of the BEST! ;)
Another one of my favorite country songs that came out during the late 1992-early 1993 period. This is one of Pam's very best, imo. I've always really loved this video and beautiful scenery, as well. Wish I was able to go back to this time.
Yes the songs like this take you back to that time of your life. Back to our younger days. The world was a better place back then.
This song never ceases to make me cry
You're not alone 😪
Me too
it's one of the best from Pam Tillis but in between the dances is best for all the time .
I hear you! It brings up many feelings of my past. I was fortunate enough to see her live in Eureka California in 1994! She was absolutely amazing &, so very beautiful! Her songs are all wonderful! ❤
Saw you perform this last night at Arlington Music Hall and loved every minute. I first heard of you in 1993 and as far as I’m concerned you are the best female country vocalist in the USA. I saw you perform once in the 90’s at Treasure Island Casino in Minnesota, and you had #1 hits but here you were, playing a small room with about 300 folding chairs. My husband and I met in 1993 dancing to your songs at a little gay bar in St. Paul, Minnesota. He surprised me with the tickets. I still think he “hung the moon” to use your phrase. He surprised me again with tickets to last night’s show. Your beautiful voice is perfect accompaniment to our now nearly 30 years together. That’s why I was wiping away some tears of joy last night. Thank you, Pam. See you next year.
One of the best voices there ever was.
She still performs from what I understand
Probably her second biggest hit behind Maybe it Was Memphis. Many would say "Spilled Perfume" but i prefer this one. Other notable mentions: Shake The Sugar Tree, Deep Down, Blue Rose Is, My Vida Loca, Don't Tell Me What To Do, I've Seen Enough to Know, and Land of the Living. I'm 47 of Dec of 2022. This was my literal childhood and teen years. The harmony, the twang, the powerful voices of this era is gone as we knew it.
The River and The Highway is one of my favs! I wish she would get more appreciation over that song, she sings it so beautifully! Love it!!
Just saw Pam Tillis and Lorrie Morgan last night in Waterloo NY. Five rolls from Stage and Dead center. WOW A Great Show. Thank You Ladies. Pam your Voice is amazing and Your a Beautiful Woman. Wouldn't mind Dating You. Incredible .
Who’s still listening to Pam tillis in 2022 !!! I am a lot of fond memories in the late 90s listening to her songs!!!!
I always liked this song when I was younger but never reallly listened to the lyrics...now that I'm listening at 35... damn.. this is a sad song...
THANK YOU FOR Tulsa State Fair performance so long ago. My Dot & me, singing together, precious memories.💘✊🙏✊🎶✊
"You do what you gotta do, and you know what you know." Yep.
Excellent point you make here, Hello how are you doing 👋👋👋👋
Yes. Indeed.
One of my favorites. Saw her live in Springfield, MA and she was absolutely amazing.
Yo! I can heard that '90s country song of Pam Tillis! I've got finally realized! 👩👢🎸🎵🎶🔊
This lady is fabulous and this song gets me bad! What's not to love?
As a young lad this was never a favorite song of mine, but looking back it really presents the mood of early 90's country music. Emotionally frank with a tender undertone. And without question, musically polished. A forgotten gem - thank you Pam.
The first country album I ever bought. Pam Tillis is so talented. I remembered all the words.
My story too.
Wow really,Hello how are you doing
A reason I love and appreciate country music is because many of the songs give valuable life advice,
"do what you gotta do, know what you know, hang on til you can't hang on, then let go...and when it's all said and done, just let that pony run." Best advice for knowing when to end bad relationships, to let go and to let that pony run!!
I've been there myself my ex dumped me for a Man who is a Helicopter pilot and left me alone with the dogs. So I got a divorce and the lawyer went so far as to name the Dogs in the divorce decree. I've moved on I had a few rough years but the dogs and my family got me through the loss. I got a Mustang I always wanted and met a wonderful woman who I would've never met otherwise, so I'm sure glad I let THAT pony run.
@@pointingdog7235 Huckleberry, glad you had your family to help you get through the rough days, that you got the dogs and the mustang "pony" that you always wanted (hope its a 65/66) and that you found someone special to ride along side you. Like you, I'm glad I let that pony keep running cuz life got so much better and I've never looked back. Keep rolling and enjoying life.
One in a trillion
Lookout when I get out of this cage....I just want to freefall....and not into another relationship either.....I just want to be happy again.....great video
@@valrobinson4002 Rooting for you to break free of your cage and start living again.
I discovered this song in the Anna Nicole Smith documentary on Netflix last night. Incredibly beautiful song, and it seems so perfectly descriptive of her life. The producers did not choose it; Anna chose it herself. It is playing in the limousine when she picks her father up at the airport and meets him for the first time (at age 24). God bless her (may she rest in peace) and may her daughter know an easier life than she did. 🙌❤
SCROLLING. You have never had a bad song.❤😂❤😂
Hell of a song!

Love love love Pam Tillis! She's already always been perfect for beautiful country woman for 2022! ♀️👠🎸🎵🎶
Just watched her tonight in Knoxville TN❤she is still amazing 🤩🥰❤️🥰
Man, the song remembers when. I'm going through a rough time and all I can hear is this chorus: You hang on until you can't hang on and then you learn to let go.
Pam, I love this song and your great voice. On Facebook someone asked what a good divorce song (as opposed to wedding songs) would be. I share this vid as it came to mind first.
Probably one of the best divorce songs I've ever heard. The reason is that it shows us that if DOES in fact go on.
Let the pony run alright
You are still wonderful!!!
Thats a sad song but its true😢
Réally sad song 😢 but you can,t help but listen to IT 🏆
Life that we knew 😢 gone forever
I took my youngest son and showed him where I use to condition my race horse in the Mississippi delta river bottom after a sad divorce as described in this song. I had four children to raise alone. I told him about the horse and how much he loved to run. All before I met his mom. I showed him where I would let him run from Church Road in the delta bottom by the old creek to the cotton gin by Walls. It made me think of this song that I liked, which came out after I started riding horses for the same reasons as “Mary” lol . Then I began thinking back. I have wondered about it honestly. My friend which I worked with at CaseIH; In-laws owned the house in Tunica. As going to the splash casino. The only casino at that time in Tunica. Pam Tillis came down and did a video at that house. The house is really unique. I always wondered if you Pam saw me riding down there in my part of the delta and my friend told you the situation? Who knows LOL anyway it wasn’t long after, this song came out and naturally, I loved it as I was already living it! Probably just a coincidence: but If this is the case, I would love to hear from you! 😊
Phillip Hall
My favorite of ALL her songs!
I need a time machine
Love Pam Tillis
Me to as well, Hello how are you doing
The best of the new revival of country music in the early 1990’s. I would definitely call it the real golden age of country music. The women were just as good as the men, maybe better. Just like the golden age of Hollywood. The best of times for sure. Pam was a big part of it.
This music got me through
As a kid, I thought the words were "let that homie run", coming through worn out speaker of an 88 Oldsmobile

This song hits different 30 years down the road.
I was with mine almost 14 years... one night we had confessions and it was pure hell we also live in W.V. 💔 we are about to permanently split and its killing me more than him I hope I can get through this...
Do what your heart tells you, if you're going to leave, don't hesitate like I did. Makes it hurt worse, but you'll be better off, been 4 years, but I'm in a much better place.
I was 2-stepping in Kansas City back then. Good times and better days!
Great song
Hello Ronda
I guess we all do what we gotta do. Sad as it is...hurt as it hurts.
This kills me internally
Should have had my chestnut pony a decade ago my sons would have been batterr off
2022 and this is what music is missing.
Love it
This wasn’t the reality in my first marriage. But the story here is something that every woman experiences when you become a divorced woman. We really feel like this. Life is hard as a single mother but we come through it stronger than most.
