Lyrics:
Lookin' at you through a misty moonlight
Katy did sing like a symphony
Porch swing swayin' like a Tennessee lullaby
Melody blowing through the willow tree
What was I supposed to do
Standing there lookin' at you
A lonely boy far from home
Maybe it was Memphis
Maybe it was Southern summer nights
Maybe it was you maybe it was me
But it sure felt right
Read about you in a Faulkner novel
Met you once in a Williams play
Heard about you in a country love song
Summer night beauty took my breath away
What was I supposed to do
Standing there lookin' at you
A lonely boy far from home
Every night now since I've been back home
I lie awake drifting in my memory
I think about you on your momma's front porch swing
Talking that way so soft to me
What was I supposed to do
Standing there lookin' at you
A lonely boy far from home
Maybe it was Memphis
Maybe it was Southern summer nights
Maybe it was Memphis
Maybe it was Southern summer nights
What was I supposed to do
Standing there lookin' at you
A lonely boy far from home

Who's listening in 2024?! Timeless jam!
Me brother. Pam tillis a goddess
I’m
Cotton fields! I’m half Haitian and French! Watching it as a teenager didn’t see any thing wrong! Again I was baffled about the Martin Luther Movement! We have been freed since 1804, I couldn’t understand Blacks in as early as 1950s had different water fountains! Granted the southerners are one chromosome from being a potato! America is America! Never understood homosephians anyway! We are due for another deluge! Not before my wonderful Irish Haitian French Norwegian give me some grandchildren 😅
I Love this song so much
Right here next to ya bro
Hello, operator? Where can I get a ticket back to the 90s?
Jusus. I wish I could go back
Do they even have operators anymore? We're too old!
Grab one for me while you're at it, would you?
grim reaper " booth three good luck"
90s country music rocks
Who else was randomly just sitting around and had “MAYBE IT WAS MEMPHIS!” Just pop into their head all these years later.
It just happened to me today! That's why I'm listening to right now
me just now
Happens all the time. Random songs will pop in my head. Lol. I love this song. 🌼. Pam music is so lovely. I love her voice. Spilled perfume is one of my favorites. "There's no use crying over spilled perfume" 💘
me just now out of completely nowhere. 😆
To the 432 thumbs down I can only guess you are deaf.
I grew up on this song as a kid in the 90s, and I'm still listening to it
I heard her music for the first time in the 90's also & I have loved her music since. 🎶
Pam Tillis, literally one of the best country singers ever! And even to this day one of the cutest😊
She is cute in her country, southern style. ♡♡♡♡♡
One of the most underrated ladies on the planet.
Got that right jack
I totally agree
I rate her 10 for 10
Yep. She has a beautiful voice
Yep
It’s so crazy how just the melody of a song can take you back to so many memories. This song takes me back to being 16 all over again. It was my favorite song then.
Well I agree with you on your comment, Hello Patricia how are you doing 👋👋👋
You should see Kip Moore's video with the song "How High"
Same! I was younger than 16, but I was with my Daddy. I was a Daddy’s girl through and through and wouldn’t let him go anywhere without me. He LOVED country music and country gospel. Anyways, we’d be together in the car and I’d sing my little heart out to this song. Windows down and all. That’s what this song takes me back to every time. He’s been gone 12 years now and I find these songs to feel closer to him. ❤
Golly, nothing like a Saturday errand day, in my new lifted dually with this song playing.
When I was a kid I never really understood why my dad liked listening to the oldies so much. Now I know why. 80s & 90s Country just takes me back to when life was better!
This is good country music when country music was country music .
Yes you can say that, Hello tommy how are you doing 👋👋👋👋
Yes you can say that, Hello James how are you doing 👋👋👋👋
I miss when people could sing like this
Takes me back to 1992 on an open stage in Detroit. Michelle Wright, Mark Chestnut played, Pam was next and it started to rain... They wouldn't let her play because of the rain. It started to let up and she came out with her acoustic and started singing to those of us that stayed, rain stopped and her band joined in, it was most memorable concert I`ve ever been to!
Awesome!!
Was it at the downtown hoedown?
@@hurtlockerr8661 It was an Miller Genuine Draft sponsored free concert, not the Hoedown (as I recall, but it's been a while). She didn't owe us anything, but she still played in the rain.... now that's true Country! Pam is awesome.
@@nealdeford321 cool I just thought it might have been the hoedown I seen a lot of new Country artists starting their careers at the hoedown . Like Clay Walker Clint Black . I even seen Hank Williams Jr there way back in 82 or 83 it was I think the first year for the hoedown. To be honest with you I didn’t even know who Hank Jr was at that time I went with a buddy of mine that used togo school in Tennessee and then come back to summer in Detroit his parents didn’t want him going to Detroit Public schools . I lived in southwest Detroit & went to southwestern hi school class of 84..I was 16 in 82 and I only listened to rock . But after that I slowly started listening to some country music.
@@hurtlockerr8661 Yeah, I grew up listening to WRIF & WLLZ but when I finally got my hand me down `78 it only had AM... welcome to WCXI country!
Put this on Alexa. Knew immediately the lyrics and melody. God bless the quality of the 90scountry and being born the right time to enjoy it ! Sorry kids today. Nothing compares.
Hello Susan.. how are you doing?
You are so right about that
Garth Brooks, Clint Black, The Judds, Dolly Parton singing with Garth Brooks, Travis Tritt, Trish Yearwood, Shania Twain, to name but a few. I was never a big fan of country music until I heard these artists who made country music, current and relatable to everyone. Miss those days!
THis dropped when I was in 1st grade. It was a fun 5-10 years, wasn't it?
I can a m
Some a few too
I think 80's 90's country is better than anything from 2000 to present
Gosh she had a angelic voice !!! 😍 this takes me back to a better time and a better place of country music 🎶
It was Memphis and it was right. What I would give for that time again. ❤️🥰😘😢
Hello Toni... how are you doing?
The nice lady has a point. You could blame a lot on southern summer nights 😂
This could easily top the country charts even now. It holds up extremely well.
One of the best songs ever
So much better than most of the country songs out now. Not the same any more.
Not enough references to blue jeans or partying and drinking.

This metalhead is saying this, this woman can BELT IT!
S A M E!!!
Fellow metal head here, but parents raised me on country... it's amazing how much rock there is under the country veneer in these older country songs. Love it.
Autta hear her live
Oh yeah!
Another metal head right here and when this song comes on a playlist, you can bet I’m crankin it to 11 and belting it out right along with her! She has such a powerful voice!
I was pam's security guard when I worked at the E -center in SLC. I'm 6 foot 5 and 250 pounds and stutter. I told pam her dad was my hero and she got in my face asking, are you messing with me? I told her no I stutter and she said oh bless your heart. What a class act lady. I'm glad I got to talk with her.
I've met her and if she got in your face, she would have had to climb you like a tree. She is one tiny lady.
@KarmicSalt
Well that's a typical repulsive response. From a pathetic male who only thinks. With the head of his little weenie! Unlucky with us ladies huh? I'm not a bit surprised! 🤣
@KarmicSalt yes, yes she is... petite alright... but you damn sure wouldn't know it, when she gets ready to belt one out.. the little lady has one hell of a set of pipes on her !!! If she wants you to hear her, then by damn, ur gonna hear her..!!! I absolutely LOVEEEEE that about her... takes that back after her daddy...I could listen to her sing all night long.. one of the best female voices in country music today.. has a damn good range, to go with it also..!!! I'll be going here in a matter of a few weeks, to see her in Franklin Kentucky, at the Mint Gaming Hall... can't wait..lol 😊😊
Patty, Reba, Trisha, and Pam were the last of the true female country singers. I miss true country music. Especially a powerful female vocal.
What about Tanya Tucker, Suzy Bogguss, Kathy Mattea, or Mary Chapin Carpenter?
I heard Loretta Lynn when speaking of who she liked of the younger generation of singers mention that she liked Trisha even though she “isn’t Country”. Not even sure what “true Country” means to you, but “Maybe It Was Memphis” is a Rock song. There were a number of fine women singers on Country radio in the 90’s. Categorizing some as “true” while by default implying the others were false is just toxic.
@@direfranchement "Toxic"... 🙄
Reba doesn't have anywhere near the pipes as Pam and Martina...it's like Reba was just packaged for the masses and was given some decent songs.
@@KP-zi6jx True.
Pam Tillis is a fine wine. That only gets better with age. This song is 30!! Way to go Pam!!

Who is still listening to 90s country in 2021? Absolutely love Pam Tillis❤
So true:)
I listen to a little of everything but I like Pam Tillis voice rsnge
I love Pam's singing. Excellent vocal range. I enjoyed the first concert of here's I attended in early 1990's and afterwards. 1990's Country music was and is still the best music compared with country music from about 2003 to present. I was fortunate enough to have played with several rock and country artists/bands over the years. Truly a lifetime of wonderful memories that I cherish.
oh, my. memphis has changed!
7/1/21!
Me
No one can ever say country will be this good again. Something about that passion in their voice blended with the bass guitar with suttle hints of 80’s is irreplaceable.
You can tell this was written in the late 80s and arranged by an early 90s Nashville producer.
And that tender acoustic in the break... Pure gold.
I put this on my Spotify playlist in the barbershop and everyone loves it!! 90s country was the absolute BEST
it's a great song!

Country music doesn't sound like this anymore. It's a fact.
You said it!
I love some country artist like rascal flatts but you said it nothing better than old school country
DJ DJ I meant this is 90's country. The new shit does not compare.
And people said that when this type of country was popular back in the day. Said it was "too poppy, or bordering on southern rock".
