  • Pine Creek Canyon - The most FUN technical canyon in Zion National Park
    Zion is an amazing place for canyoneering. There are canyons of all difficulty levels from the beginner friendly Keyhole Canyon to the Experts Only Heaps canyon.
    But everyone talks about one canyon in particular; Pine Creek Canyon. Pine Creek Canyon has it all. Fun rappels, amazing narrows, the Cathedral, the 100 foot free hanging grand finale and a relatively easy exit.
    I don't care how advanced you are and how many times you've done it, Pine Creek Canyon is a blast. You can't deny it.
    You park your car at the exit and either have a shuttle or stick out your thumb and hitch a ride. A quick but scenic drive, punctuated by the tunnel and you're at the top. You walk from your car down a short hillside and...you're there. That's the fee for entry. A rarity in canyons, for sure.
    Immediately you are faced with a pothole aptly named The Intimidator. They say if you struggle here, it's time to turn around. I disagree. I ALWAYS struggle with The Intimidator. It's just awkward. I was relieved on this trip when my canyoneering crew all had issues; they're much more comfortable climbing than I am. Well, maybe Nick nailed it on his first try.
    After The Intimidator, Pine Creek Canyon immediately narrows up and presents you with rappel after rappel. Next thing you know, you're in one of my favorite places in Zion National Park; the Pine Creek Canyon Cathedral. Stop and appreciate what you're looking at before you head down rappel. The Cathedral is truly a special place.
    At the bottom of the rappel, you'll quickly have a feel for what the next section of the canyon has in store for you. You'll either be standing in a shallow puddle, signifying you're going to be walking on mostly dry ground, or you'll be swimming in a chilly pool. If you have the latter, which we did on this trip, you'll soon be faced with several long swims through amazing, tight and windy sections of canyon. There are spots that are almost completely dark. I love this section.
    Then you're back 'outside' in the light. A couple more rappels and you're at the grand finale. A 100' free hanging rappel into an amazing grotto. Take care when getting on rappel; the footing by the anchor is often on top of flood debris that could give way, sending you straight down into the grotto prematurely.
    This is one of my favorite rappels.
    A quick downclimb (slide) into a pool and you're out. You've done Pine Creek Canyon. Boulder hop/boulder problem solve your way down canyon and back to your car.
    Pine Creek Canyon. I've done quite a few canyons by now, but this is the one that made me fall in love with canyoneering. If you haven't gone through Pine Creek Canyon yet, make plans. If you have, make plans to go back.

    You dauntless athletes and great equipment and intrepid skill and my new Dell laptop make it possible for me to visit and explore where my 84 yr old body could never have done. Thanks much. I hope you stop occasionally to just appreciate how fortunate you are!

    We did Pine Creek last Monday. Interesting to see the subtle changes in water levels and the Cathedral log soup in just a few days' time.

    Great video Jerry! You are seeing some incredible places with the canyoneering. I can't even imagine the Water & Time it took to create some of these gorgeous slots. Plus a great food stop in Kanab!

    Woah, that looks awesome. Also, horrifying to think what that would be like filled with water - I see what you meant about this one in your video from Keyhole.

    • @JerryArizona
      @JerryArizona  2 роки тому +1

      Keyhole drains into Pine Creek. I've seen a flash flood video of this one full to the very top of the Cathedral (> 100' of water). Terrifying.

      @@JerryArizona No joke. Crazy to think that one of the Keyhole Seven got carried 5 miles downstream into Pine Creek Canyon. The power of water.

      This is one of the most amazing canyons I've been in. Definitely encourage taking some classes and doing some of the basic canyons like Bear or Christopher Creek and see how you like it.

    Great trip! Could you make a video about how to build the skill step by step for this kind of trips?

    • @JerryArizona
      @JerryArizona  2 роки тому +1

      I'm really not qualified to give canyoneering advice. I know enough, but not enough to teach. I highly recommend you take some classes. If you're in AZ, AZ Rock and Canyon is the place to go. Tom and Jeremy really know what they're doing.

    Jerry the Spider !! Love the face in the sandstone at 2.13 ! Is this your longest vertical free repel ? If so how much rope ? Awesome video as always ! You got some great buddy’s !

    Around 1:18 in the video, going down rhe cathedral, what knot do u got going on there? Its 4 small and a loop. Havent seen it before.
    Video looked amazing! Cant wait to do it myself!

    • @JerryArizona
      @JerryArizona  2 роки тому

      That's a CEM. Pretty slick system for easy rope pulls. You definitely need to practice it a ton.

  • @forbiddenair

    What time of year did you do this? Is a 3:2 wetsuit borderline sufficient?

    • @JerryArizona
      @JerryArizona  Рік тому +1

      It's been so long, I can't remember. I think this was late summer? Maybe August/September. At the tail end of monsoon season, which isn't advised. I have a cheap wetsuit for this one. Probably a 2~3mm. When it was more full and colder, I went through with a 5mm. Really just depends on the conditions when you go. It's been a crazy winter for rain and snow. Wouldn't be surprised if it has flow right now.

    What is the name of that knot you're using at the anchor? It looks like a variation of a Macrame. Amazing video btw. We're heading to pine creek next month.

    • @JerryArizona
      @JerryArizona  10 місяців тому

      Not 100% sure which rap you're talking about, but I'm guessing it was a CEM knot. Nick was on a CEM kick this trip.

      Love all your videos. I’ve watched them many times.
      About 6mo’s ago I started canyoneering, wondering why/when do you use the CME or Macrame instead of a block?
      Hoping to get out to Zion (zion area) this Fall.
      Thanks for your insight on this.

    what knot are you using at 1:25 to retrieve your rope?

    • @JerryArizona
      @JerryArizona  2 роки тому

      A CEM. Works great for a lot of raps. Much easier to retrieve the rope than using a block.
