We used to use an Akai S2000 years ago (yeah, w that tiny ass screen lol)... but I notice something interesting after some years w software like Ableton (and sw sampler plug-ins). I notice that the IDEAS come out entirely different between messing w those he samplers versus mousing ariund software. Also some of the crazy nice filters i recall from the Akai and minute sample degradation/resolution/conversion(grit) is missing from software.
x, THANK YOU for sharing your experience with your old Akai samplers...your comments are SO GOOD!!! I agree wholly my friend...'crazy nice filters'...YES!!! Those Akai samplers had a very unique sound and as you point out, the filters are MAD crazy!!! Dwayne Goettel (RIP) was, in my own experience, the absolute KING of the Akai sampler...he did things with those filters I've never really heard since...quite extraordinary! Creating field recording libraries is good for this purpose as well. It’s amazing how much can be added to a project by effecting, time stretching or mangling an organic, and otherwise benign sound. Wind, birds, crunching leaves or the carbonation in a glass of soda can be completely psychotic.

Most of my banks are commonly recognized samples re-edited in weird ways, or where this video parallels-spending time seeking out and sampling cool vinyl records in weird ways!! banking the goodies is a great way to never feel the “lack of cool options” and develop your sound... play in an hour or so per record, backwards, fast, slow, ‘scratchy’, blow on the needle, get weird! (direct drive table) then chop up your rewards...another unmention aspect of why this and ken’s technique works so well is --You will never save a sample you dislike!!!! instant inspiration. saw deadmau5 (for example) stream his bank just about a two thousand drum breaks he collected while working at a record shop when he was a teenager....now that i have my own i can see how worthwhile and forever-lasting this can be

When I first started producing music for EA back in the late 90's, there was an incredible atmosphere within the company. There were probably 10-15 really talented musicians working under the various franchises, and they were sharing resources...it was sort of a new concept to me at the time, and an invaluable experience to be a part of. That time in the business was pretty cool, EA was producing original soundtracks under almost every franchise...it was brilliant! This is great practical advice! I have a ton of original samples (foley, field recordings, acoustic instruments.. etc). I have them all organized nicely on my computer, but rarely put them into a sampler, until/if I have a need for it. I am going to start taking this extra step immediately! Thank you!

Ken, I know you worked on some of the latter tracks on Skinny Puppy's Myth Maker, but I wanted to know if you knew anything about the production of one of the earlier tracks on that album; Dal. In the song there seems to be some kind of effect going on with Ohgr's vocals, and it seems to occur around the last word of every line he delivers, like when he says the lyric "A call that's never caught", the word "Caught" seems to have a subtle, but noticibe downward shift in the pitch that is hard to describe Do you have any idea how the hell this was done?
Great question Franken Hole, thank you for sharing here ;-) So much of the vocal processing was often done before I even put up the first fader of the mix during that SP era! I've mentioned just how instrumental Mark Walk is in these productions, and so many of those subtle, and cool vocal effects were likely Mark's magic ;-)) That was also a time I was using a lot of vocoders and other pitch devices to 'force' notes so to speak. Hi Ken, many thanks for your channel. Unlike any other it demystifies many of my favorite sounds and the studio techniques that created them. With that in mind I have a question you might consider addressing: much of the music I compose and record is "hard-rock/alternative metal" (traditional drums/bass/guitars/vocals/synths arrangements). I want to incorporate a lot more of these industrial/electronic elements into my songs but I'm not sure how to go about it. Should I compose the music and incorporate the "f**king sh*t up" stuff as I go along, or would it be easier to finish the song as a straight-up rock arrangement and then go in afterwards to treat it all as a remix, adding sounds and effects, and chopping it up after the fact? Ken, I know you worked on some of the latter tracks on Skinny Puppy's Myth Maker, but I wanted to know if you knew anything about the production of one of the earlier tracks on that album; Dal. In the song there seems to be some kind of effect going on with Ohgr's vocals, and it seems to occur around the last word of every line he delivers, like when he says the lyric "A call that's never caught", the word "Caught" seems to have a subtle, but noticibe downward shift in the pitch that is hard to describe

Great question Franken Hole, thank you for sharing here ;-) So much of the vocal processing was often done before I even put up the first fader of the mix during that SP era! I've mentioned just how instrumental Mark Walk is in these productions, and so many of those subtle, and cool vocal effects were likely Mark's magic ;-)) That was also a time I was using a lot of vocoders and other pitch devices to 'force' notes so to speak. Hi Ken, many thanks for your channel. Unlike any other it demystifies many of my favorite sounds and the studio techniques that created them. With that in mind I have a question you might consider addressing: much of the music I compose and record is "hard-rock/alternative metal" (traditional drums/bass/guitars/vocals/synths arrangements). I want to incorporate a lot more of these industrial/electronic elements into my songs but I'm not sure how to go about it. Should I compose the music and incorporate the "f**king sh*t up" stuff as I go along, or would it be easier to finish the song as a straight-up rock arrangement and then go in afterwards to treat it all as a remix, adding sounds and effects, and chopping it up after the fact? Great question Craig_M, thank you for sharing here ;-) I've used a number of platforms over the years, but I seem to always fall back on MachFive. Battery has been a go-to platform for years as well, and I have a few libraries for it, but prolly 90% is on MachFive. I would love to hear ideas from other users experience, let's keep the conversation going, cause I for one, would love to hear what people are excited about!!!
