  • Importance of Observation for Drawing & Painting. In this video, I discuss the importance of observation when it comes to creating art, a drawing or a painting. It's really the first step I take in the process of anything I create, especially from life.

Observation is the key. First you need to see your subject accurately and as it is; not as you think it is. Then you need to see what you are doing, so you can correct the errors.

@@subarugoat69 What do you mean? It should be easier to just draw what you see rather than add your own thoughts to it, etc. Just draw and compare it to what is actually there.

I taught my first private art lesson this week and I litterly said all of this to my student! Observation is SUPER important! It's the foundation and using shapes are the building blocks.

When learning to draw, Not only are the physical skills important, but also observing your subject.
(Very important because without observation, it can be difficult to render/draw it accurately)
Observation is one of the first things he does before he starts a painting/drawing. (Any subject)
    --
    1:37 - Mental Notes
Just Observe/Take note of things even when you're not drawing.
Artists are meant to be observant.
Just take notes of things in whatever situation even if you're not drawing you can do this anywhere.

Very good video. I think observation is part of the importance of being mindful when drawing. I think most beginners tend to "wing" their drawings without actually thinking about how to go about it, ending up drawing mindlessly. I think a good first step is to simplify the forms when observing the subject, and to think of these simple forms in 3D, keeping in mind perspective

Well said and great point! I think having a reference two is super important as well for beginners. So easily overlooked - helps to not draw mindlessly as much.

When i was 5 i drew (not so good) people. thier head would be a circle a dress would be a triangle a shirt would be rectangle and small squares for the arm holes. legs would be lines or rectagles and shoes where ovels. it wast the best but thinking now whith other drawing i did when i was little i did with like siple shapes, and drawing now you do shapes and turn it into what you what to draw more less. But if i want better drawings than a 5 year old im goings to need to be even observation and see shadows and shapes and how things work and all that. Guess me drawing when I was little wasnt so bad (even if my drawings where bad and still kind of are but im learning).

To observe correctly you need to observe from life. This gives the shapes in volume ,play of light, subtleties not available to the camera.

Hol a macskád?
