    I’ve taken multiple observational drawing courses. Some online and some in person. Only about half of the time were these principles emphasized. The rest of the time, it was basically a free for all.
    Now I’m in the situation to tutor some peers who are struggling with the subject. I won’t let them down by neglecting to mention these techniques, as some of my other teachers had.

    As a practising artist going back to college to further his education, and with the need to be good at observational drawing, I find this film a great source of inspiration and practical guidance. Thank you so much Best wishes Tim from England

    Thank you so much! I have already shown your SI video to Art 4s and this will be shown to Art 1 tomorrow. I am currently writing sub plans for a teacher that did not return and it was too late to find a replacement before school started to thanks for making these!

    Good summary of the elements of drawing.
    A person couldn't go wrong taking this advice on board.
    There is so much to drawing and painting and I hope some of your students derive lifelong pleasure on this journey.
    One never knows at what age a person will produce their best art work.
    I love delving into old art magazines, particularly the English ones, which are never slick.
    They have a wealth of practicality and philosophy.

    Great overview.. curious as to why you would direct people to never smudge.. I find that is a great starting point for the value challenged young artist. They see immediate results.. then we graduate up to more complex shading techniques.

    • @theartproject
      @theartproject  4 роки тому +1

      this is true. I personally don't like the way the smudge with a finger looks as well as the use of a tortillion or the lighter pressure on the pencil to create the shading. But you're right. the smudging would probably be of great help to the beginner.

    Number 5 is completely wrong. “Draw what you see, not why you know”? Please. You must know how a thing is constructed to draw it correctly. You showed a hand as this point came up, which is utterly contradictory. If you see a hand in life, and just draw what you see of the hand, it will be flat, lifeless, and boring. You need to know the anatomy of the hand, the rules of contour for the various positions of the fingers, and the fundamentals of light and shadow, beforehand in order to draw what you see properly. If you exclusively draw what you see, you may as well draw an outline of it or a really messy sketch as they will both show the same thing.

    • @theartproject
      @theartproject  2 роки тому +4

      You misunderstood. Anatomy is very important. Light and shadow are so important. If you know those things drawing what you see will include those things. If you don't know those things but you draw what you see, it will be better than if you draw only what you know, because you don't know about those things. Like a camera. A camera knows nothing about anatomy and light but simply records what it sees and it is usually quite realistic.
