I love golf. I'm 2 years in now and I'm glad I picked up the sport.
Same here ... I'm 58 and only started playing about 4 yrs ago. I fell in love with the game and wish I would have given it serious consideration years ago.
You will at some point fall out of love with it
I got to the point where I had just had enough of it and took a break
Took 3 years before I picked a club up again
Didn't take long to be back in love again though
@@jackkinoff6943 eh don’t agree
How's your golf game these days?
Mr. B, you're very wise and so reassuring! I love this and live by these tips in my golfing career. Golf is made so complicated by many through convoluted instruction, etc. Stay with what's historical! Love this! Thank you again!
Thanks very much Allan!

Encouraging video. It all starts with the mindset.
thanks Jim, glad you found it helpful.

I think this is one of the most important concepts. You can fiddle with details on the range for a while, but afterwards you need to focus on big picture/feelings again. It took me ages to "crack" what are the crucial thoughts for me and after years it has basically crystallized to three detail-thoughts that I use on the range to get ready: rotate body properly in backswing, thrust hips without lifting up the left hip and get the butt of the club down as fast as possible, these thoughts assemble the whole swing with loads of lag, shallowing, great speed. Then when I have these things "programmed" I focus on one thing only during play: finish the swing in a nice balanced position. This process (together with a proper setup) has really been the game changer (literally) which took me years to find THE critical points for me. But since then the game turned into a real joy, those pure irons, the long drives, the nice divots and backspins. But I think these are highly individual and other people may need to focus on other things.

Wow! That was a deep one Adam, but as usual every word made sense. I've often felt that thinking about more than two things in a swing is overload and sometimes even two things seems a lot. You've confirmed the way I approach improvement. Thanks.
Thanks Hunter!

A British player whose name I have forgotten, whose swing Jack Nichlaus praised, told me that his one swing thought in play was to keep the butt of the club a constant distance from his sternum. That seems a pretty good one to me, maybe combined with the 'right pocket back' one of Greg Norman during practise swings to make sure your hips are turning and you are not swaying off the ball. In play though you shouldn't have more than one thought. A good book for this is "The Inner Game of Golf" which talks about keeping the 'mind' quiet. Much of the reason tennis player grunt is to keep their head 'quiet'.

Thanks Adam, your inclusive generous leadership style has helped to shift my own golf swing from bad to good, from grief to delight, and from sadness to joy, .. so my only unqualified comment to you is that your current golf swing looks to have improved somewhat, in execution and linear orientation from a side on view, pardon moi, .. 😢 so as the mentors have told me, i would say this to you and anyone, 👉 slow down, shorten and flatten your backswing , focus aim left to 12 o'clock exactly, square up, watch only the back of the ball, hit fluently and softly, listen for the ping, and under all circumstances keep your head down, and never DO NOT LOOK UP OR RAISE YOUR HEAD UNTIL AFTER FULL COMPLETION OF YOUR FOLLOW THRU THEN ONLY AS A SEPARATE ACTION FULLY AFTER COMPLETING FOLLOW THRU AND ROLLING OF THE WRISTS OVER THE BALL. shifting club head weight fully from back to front, as based on written instructions taught to me by boston ivy league golf instructors and pupils in the 80s. Old fashioned i know but the way of success remains the same. Based on the law of averages. Many blessings, pardon moi. 💝
Thanks for the comment Michael.

Very helpful thoughts, Adam. I always think that there is a very small sweet spot in golf between being too controlling and mechanical in swinging at one end and being too careless and inattentive at the other. When I find the sweet spot I can play OK, but finding and staying in that sweet spot is the challenge of golf for me.
David,
I agree 100%. It’s a challenge for me too, by the way

You're talking about the topic of "motor learning," and, for example -- the doctrine of prior entry. Good stuff.
Thanks for the comment John.

Great tips! Not only for golf but also I think in life. Really enjoyed this Sports Psychology type content. Thank you!!!
Thanks, and glad you liked the video

The most important thought is the one that is currently working…until it ceases to work and then on to the next one lol.
In all seriousness a very good video especially about the conscious and subconscious mind. In all my time playing I’ve found success using internal thoughts (some mechanical queue), external thoughts (swing shape, visuals) and even the holy grail a neutral thought (not at all golf related). The key is there is only room for one thought in there and the simpler the better 🏌🏻♂️

In my youth, my swing thought concentrated on the backswing - (never really performed well if it was downswing related). I felt I could control the backswing but the downswing was just a reaction - goes too fast to think about it! But lately - trying to get the squat and rotation proper: I really am a mess with my mind/swing thoughts. I need to remember to turn-off the “swing analyzer mode” when playing.

At the top of my backswing I say pause in my mind(so I don't rush my downswing) & then shift & then I let it go. Seems to help me with tempo.
Glad it’s working for you!

Great tip. Wouldn't be surprised if Adam was 4 time coach of year one day.

Aside from avoiding "quickness", to me it is all vision. I only visualize the shot I want to hit. And for sure I don't visualize the shot I don't want to hit. Once visualized, I just let it happen all by itself (ex-Touring Pro Ivan Gantz once told me that psycho-cybernetics was the most important thing in golf ). I once hit a five iron to an elevated green with water in front of it. My playing partner was second to hit from about the same spot. I said to him after he hit, "I'm sure glad I didn't have to hit it over that water". And he said back to me, "You big dumb ass, you just did".

My best golf shots are when I focus on hitting the middle. I do all the thinking of mechanics, shot shape, target line in the pre-shot routine. Once over the ball all focus is on strike. If I have any 'thinking' during my swing I get all over the place.
Thanks for the comment Ashley
@@Scratchgolfacademy you are welcome
Great video! I hope you see this, but if you do, sometimes I birdie a hole and then the next hole I feel so much pressure to keep up the good pace and my thoughts go everywhere. It often results in a bogey or worst. Any tips for this?
Thanks Aris.
It’s not easy to do, but try to stay in the present, shot by shot

Sheesh, such a smooth swing.
Thanks!
I seem to always have a swing thought or two as I'm about to pull the club back. One time as I was starting my takeaway, I recall thinking to myself, "Oh, crap. I forgot which swing thought I was going to use." Too late. I had already started. Hit one of the best iron shots ever. I''m going to the range tomorrow and try to think of not thinking of a swing thought! Wish me luck.
Best of luck Jim.
Thanks, Adam
That's why I think it's more of a detriment to always come onto UA-cam to watch a thousand instructional videos. You already know what we needs to be done, but you're always having to go to these videos for reassurance and validation. If we stop that, our games would be much better. Sure, a tip or two here and there or when we are struggling, but why look when you're not struggling. Means you are doing something right!
How do you make swing changes with awareness, process?
You rehearse what you want to do (feel) then you see if that’s what actually happens when you swing. Most people are thinking so hard about what to do they don’t feel anything

Good Advice.

Give the body a simple task to do. My swing thought is to "cleave," through the ball. Cut it straight down the middle, through the north to south poles. I line up every tee shot by using the line on the ball and aiming it like a putt. My natural hand-eye and body coordination takes over while performing this simple task, of cutting through the ball. My driving has never been better or more consistent and it works with all of my ground shots. I don't think that this should be confused with "hitting at the ball." It's all about using the whole body to hit through the ball.

“You’re human. You’re imperfect. The world we live in is imperfect. You are going to struggle fairly often in golf.”
Aristotle-like advice from AB
Thanks Stuart!
My swing thought is always during my backswing is that I don't feel in sync and feel I'm not rotating correctly with short irons either that or my feet are too close together as I'm 6 foot 2 inches and probably need a wider stance than the recommended feet in line with shoulders and sometimes top or slice the ball 😩
Hope you make progress Rory.

I heard the tip of write a swing thought down on your card before the start of a round
That's all good during social games but I don't think it is right to be doing it on the card of who you are marking in competition
As a result I put a message on a bit of masking tape and stick it to my buggy each round
Just something that is to be my focus through my round
Every time I go to my bag there it is
Glad you found something that's working for you.

Is shallowing also like hitting it from the side?
Yes, I’d say it is.
All the best, Adam
@@Scratchgolfacademy Thanks! This could be a break thru moment for me!
I can be having a great round. Driving the ball straight and long. All hazards, water, trees, bunkers you name it don't even enter my head because I am so full of confidence Then coming on to the 18th tee any hazards are highlighted in my thoughts and the pressure is on. Yep you guessed it. I am now reflecting on what could have been. Oh well that's golf eh!
17 holes is pretty good JH.

This is a valuable “lesson” for me, since my brain tends to go wild during golf. But I do need to occupy it with a (single) task “thought” or it goes wild with dire results!. And yes, a temp or rhythm thought or one single mechanic thought is when I do best.

I put a song in my head as I'm lining up the shot. It allows for my body to work like I've practiced and that seems to quiet my mind. Usually "Sound if Silence". I have a tendency to to have TOO MANY swing thoughts. My mind goes through the shot with the song playing in my head. Otherwise I'm thinking about every aspect of the swing and the shot failed before I even swing.
I like it Anthony!
Sam Snead used to hum the ‘Blue Danube’ (I believe) to himself.

@@Scratchgolfacademy Didn't know that about Sam Snead! You learn something new every day! LOL
Hello darkness my old friend 🤣
That was a very useful video Adam. You could follow up for your audience on the difference between practice and playing. The game of swinging is not as you know the game of golf.
As Homer says : Garbage in ; Garbage out , Let today’s garbage be better than yesterday’s.
When you PLAY it’s best to use only one idea for that day. When you practice you can and should work on some chosen swing component.
By the way , your demeanour and professionalism is unsurpassed on UA-cam
Cheers: FJN.

I'm going to write my swing thought on my left hand with a sharpie. No glove as I don't wear one, right in the skin....
Hope it helps Bryan.

So the the best swing thought is maybe to have awareness and no swing thought
Bo,
Awareness, not swing thoughts.
All the best, Adam
one must consider that different people's brains work at different speeds...therefore, one person who may need one swing thought and another four...why we listen to sports psychologists who contend "no thoughts" or "never more than one" and not the greatest major champion of all time, Jack Nicklaus, who has admitted that 3 or 4 worked best for him is beyond me...IS IT NOT POSSIBLE THAT NICKLAUS WAS NOT ALONE? now professional educators in elementary schools dealing with children with attention deficit disorder are teaching us that some people NEED multiple cues or anchors while others fewer...as golf instructors we must learn how that student processes information and identify the optimal number of thoughts which occupy the conscious mind and prevent it from distracting the subconscious -- much as Gallwey describes in THE INNER GAME OF GOLF

Mine is usually, ohh shit mkje the green keeper is here on the first tee box, don't enbarass yourself. Just get it airborne please
Might want to try a more mellow thought Michael.

My best thought is “please don’t shank it into the woods.”
Hope that works for you!

@@Scratchgolfacademy …it doesn’t……hahahahahha
Awareness through the unconscious mind or conscious mind? Lost me when you said the conscious mind won't give up control
The tendency to tell the body (subconscious mind) what to do, and how to do it while swinging.
All the best, Adam
Invaluable advise. The 6 inches between your ears is where u play golf. My ego is my nemesis. Slow it down. This guys swing is effortless. Video yourself is my hint. Then stop trying to monster the ball. I dropped 4 strokes by dropping my club head speed. FOLLOW THROUGH is so important.
