  • Changing the oil on my airplane equipped with an oil pressure screen rather than a spin on oil filter. Preventative maintenance - including oil changes - is one of the privileges of a private pilot certificate.

Probably the best oil change video I've seen on the interwebs. Thanks!

Thanks for the nice words! I no longer have the pressure screen as I've added the spin-on oil filter adapter. But I knew I was going to add that when I made this video so I had a window to show what it was like.

Around JQF they really like to fly right in front of departing or landing airports.

I'd suggest having an oil filter adapter put on your plane. Can get 50 hours out of an oil change. Lot less mess and lot less of a pain to take off and put on. I had that done to my Decathlon this last fall. Did cost about 800 dollars but the ease of now changing the oil is well worth the cost to me.

    • @1dullgeek
      @1dullgeek  Рік тому

Yep. I did that during the most recent annual. Oil changes are easier. And I get more hours on the same oil.

Yes, you made a mess but nice seeing you can change you own oil.

I could just see the bill from my mechanic now….. “Part: $1.15. Labor: $125.00 total due $126.15.” 😂

@@1dullgeek I need to replace a gasket in each of my tip tanks. The total cost of the gaskets are about five bucks. Mechanics like “I hope we can get both done within a day of labor.” 😳

I subscribe to savvy aviation so that I can ask someone if quotes like this are reasonable. I've got my first annual coming up and I'm really glad I have these guys helping me.

This actually took a lot longer than I thought it would take. I hope I get more efficient at it as time goes on. When I switch to a spin on oil filter, safety wiring will be a fun new challenge. For now, this is what I have to do.
So far I have been consistently shocked at how dirty my oil gets after only 25 hours of engine operation. 100LL aviation gas leaves a bunch of particles that the oil has to clean out of the engine. My engine is rated to take ethanol free unleaded car gas. It's better for the engine and less expensive than avgas. I should really start using that more often, but it's not exactly convenient to get this gas to the airport to put into my airplane. I have a 14 gallon take but it weighs over 100 lbs when filled.
Any suggestions on how to easily use car gas rather than dirty expensive avgas?

I used to fly flight simulator but ever since flying a real airplane I have lost my taste for flight simulators. They just don't feel the same.
That said, I will definitely be practicing instrument procedures in a flight simulator. I just can't do the takeoff/landing thing. Because it feels so completely wrong.

Probably the single most annoying thing about being a student pilot was the imprecision of the federal regulations around preventative maintenance. I had many discussions with different people with different opinions. And where I landed was that even though I own the airplane, my student pilot certificate was insufficient to permit me to do preventative maintenance - like an oil change - without being supervised by an A&P.
It’s possible that I’m misreading the regulations. They appear to be written by lawyers for lawyers and pilots who are lawyers. But I’m not a lawyer, so I don’t want to pretend to know what is legally correct or incorrect. But the position I took, if wrong doesn’t get me into trouble. Whereas if I did my oil changes as a student pilot, and I was wrong about if I was allowed to, I could be in trouble.
Anyway it’s now 100% clear: I am a private pilot and I own the airplane and it’s operating under Part 91, so I can change the oil on my airplane without needing to hire an expensive A&P mechanic to either do it or provide supervision.
While not my favorite benefit of having my private pilot certificate, it’s surprisingly high on the list. If you’re a pilot, what is your favorite part of having your ticket?

Oh man I've forgotten. What I did was go and buy a couple of tubes from the home depot and kept the one that worked best and returned the others. I *think* it ended up being 1/2" internal diameter but I honestly don't remember.
