Okay lemme explain: Yes this is how Dragon Quest has always been...and it's a huge part of why it struggled in the US. First person battles are boring because you don't get to SEE your character fight. 8, 9, and 11 are HUGE upgrades because of the visible characters and when DQ3HD was announced and we saw that screenshot of the back-views of the characters we thought "FINALLY! My biggest complaint with this game has been fixed!" so to see it switch to first person was REALLY disappointing. ESPECIALLY in a game with a custom party. I love create-a-party RPGs. They're my favorite kind of RPG. DQ 3 and 9 are literally the only entries in the mainline series I enjoy. But unfortunately, most make-a-party RPGs don't let you SEE the character you make. There are also those out there who do not like make-a-party RPGs and not seeing your characters in combat makes it even harder for them to feel an attachment to the characters. The attacks do not need to be long or elaborate, simply a sword swing. It adds a LOT to the game. Even when I'm fast forwarding through, I'd like to see my bunny girl slap a monster in the face. It really REALLY adds a lot to the game. If nothing else it makes it more clear who is attacking and makes the characters more than a faceless bundle of stats. It LITERALLY adds character.
It's not a deal breaker for me, but it is a crippling disappointment as yes, the lack of on-screen characters really was my biggest complaint with the original Dragon Quest games. Existing DQ fans obviously won't be bothered, but the newcomers will be.

Because they would have to animate all the armors and weapons to match two or three animations for each class and both genders. Or, they can give us this and hope we'd be cool with it since the originals were in first person during combat. 3 animations *40 or so armors*10 classes*2 genders. 2400 animations if they try and cram all the possible movements into just three animations. Or, cut the possible animations and return to first person so the battle animations for the monsters and attacks can have that familiar feel

If you call them remaster that is fine cause people can expect to play the same game again with minor upgrades but this is clearly just a polished version of the same game NOT a remake!

It's a dealbreaker, I want me sprite in action.
It isn't about making the feel of the original anymore, It's about updating the original in modern gaming era.
You can probably make a first person one and a 3rd person one.
But the best one is always the 3rd person, because it can show and express the character you are playing as. This isn't FPS, it is an RPG.
Why only update the background and setting but not update on how you see your character battle?
Also you are re-releasing an older game, you have to cater to newer audience who probably played the newer titles and who plays Final Fantasy in which all these years you can see your sprite.

I'm a huge JRPG fan, I've been playing them my entire life (I'm 26), but just played my first DQ game this year with DQ11, I didn't even know DQIII was getting a remake until a few months ago, and at first I was super hyped, but the camera is a deal breaker for me, some people would say that my opinion doesn't matter bc I'm not a DQ fan, but at the end, what it matters is how well the game sells, so we'll have to wait, hopefully it sells well enough.
I do enjoy to watch my party doing their animations in combat and lucky for all of us this year is full with JRPGs, so bc of that I'm gonna wait for a big discount on this game, I completed Like a dragon IW in may, Just finished DQ11 a couple of months ago and now I'm completing SMT V:V to 100%, haven't played P3R yet, and Metaphor is near to be released along side to Romancing Saga 2 remake, so I'll just wait when until it gets a big discount bc the camera really put me off.

Personally speaking, "quality of life" improvements seem more like crutches. The gbc version had enough additions but no crutches. That will remain my preferred version. As for the remake, it isn't necessary to play every game ever made as not all games will appeal every persons taste. The important question is how will the remake do in the dragon quest homeland.

  • @JeanKP14

People have always been like this about Dragon Quest. Many people refused to play them/thought they were boring until DQVIII. It's kind of sad, because they're great games, and the animations in this game and the DS remakes look GREAT. You have fully animated beautiful monster sprites, come on! I think they would get used to them if they gave them a shot.
I'm pretty sure the only remake that added third person battling was VII. So it's clearly a deliberate choice to keep the first person in a remake of Japan's FAVOURITE Dragon Quest.

I'm not going to play it because the people behind it are racist. I've played DQ3 many times in my childhood and I've ccme back to it over the years, and not once in my life did I EVER have any inkling in my imagination that the trolls look like black people. Now they've deeply disrespected Akira Toriyama after his death by implying that he's a racist and by removing the trolls lips because his artwork was supposedly based on black people. I find that TRAUMATIC. Only a racist could see the trolls as black people. It ruined the whole game for me. I'll never look at the trolls the same again without feeling negative thoughts about the racist people who worked on this HD-2D Remake. This game is sadness.

I haven't even seen these redesigns for them or other monsters, but while I only beat the latest mobile port for the game that came out on Switch a few years back I'm of the same opinion on them and other monster or human designs they might do. I never once thought anything was inappropriate. Trolls are supposed to be terrifying and ugly creatures in mth lore. They eat people that cross bridges and small children. Akira Toriyama probably thought that was the best way to represent that at the time, and I don't really think it should be changed because this line of thinking would also mean they'd need to edit every episode of the original Dragon Ball too as people with big lips or other similar features were shown a lot. It's a drawing style...

Hardcore Dragon Quest fans would have thrown a fit if they took out the First Person Battles. I think I would have just felt weird about it, it's not a new Dragon Quest game, it's a remake. I feel like Remakes should try to feel like they are representing the original game, not just story. Still, you know, a compromise would probably have been sweeping camera work animations that transfer from 3rd to first person. Sure they have that a little now, but I am talking bigger and different depending on attacks. That said, I feel like most point people would put it back to first person anyways just to be able to speed through some of those encounters.

The idea seems to be to keep that same nostalgic feel that the old versions had. Octopath and Triangle were new IPs with no preconceived expectations. And Live-A-Live never came out of Japan before so that needed a fresh coat of paint to get a new audience interested. Dragon Quest on the other hand is legendary and Square-Enix found that middle ground to keep both old and new fans of these classics interested all over the world.

I like the first person view. I feel like "I " or "we" are fighting rather than "my characters" are fighting. I feel like i stand eye to eye with the monsters which add to the feeling of immersion. That is part of why I love phantasy star 1 and 4. But maybe adding a short sequence of the character attacking right now whilst the others are hidden, like in phantasy star 4 would be a good compromise. I am curious about other first person jrpgs like 7th Saga because i like this view. Especially if the monsters are a bit scary (sometimes Dragon Quest is a little bit too cute, I want to feel a little bit like what I am fighting is actually dangerous, especially if it's a hard fight ). Another point: If all turnbased jrpgs would be seen from the side i would feel like we only had different versions of Final Fantasy. Like, all other sub-genres from the genre would be erased from history and we would get a streamlined experience that is always almost the same. I am loooking forward to this game.

I love the option that now you can speed up the combat. I noticed that spells affecting a group of enemies will show the damage to all of them at once, instead of the old one-by-one impact. That’s a huge improvement compared to older games in the franchise. To me, this is not a problem at all; in fact, now you can see your characters preparing for battle. It's just a moment, but they are actually there, unlike in previous games where you jumped from the map to the combat in first person in a second.

Seeing the people battle like in DQ11 would be nice, but there is a difference. That isn’t a dealbreaker for me for DQ3 (it is for DQ1 because that feels like the only thing they could add in DQ1 to not be like the other DQ1 Switch game and wouldn’t totally change the story). DQ2, this isn’t a dealbreaker either, but I hope they make some changes to 2. Because why I would by DQ 1+2 if it is just the same thing as the other Switch version of 1 and 2?
For 3, my dealbreaker is this… they need to have the same amount of content as they did in the GBC version (with improved methods of obtaining monster medals, not make it so time-consuming) and possibly add more. I absolutely despise the earlier Switch version of 3, as they took out content (they didn’t need to).

Played DQ 11 and also have DQ7 and 8 on the 3ds. Because of the more recent games, I need to see the characters attack in battle. Adding that 3rd person view in DQ7 for 3DS made it that much better in my opinion. Like others have said, why not allow players to toggle 1st person or 3rd person for battles. As a hardcore JRPG player, being able to see the characters in action makes battles more fun in my opinion.
This remake looks nice even if the graphics aren't completely overhauled on the scale as let's say Trials of Mana (Seiken Densetsu), but yea no 3rd person view is a miss. I'm sure the game will be fun but I would expect just a bit more from a game not from an indie company. To those who buy this, please enjoy the game!

I'm not really sure why this would be a deal-breaker for some people, but then again people have diffrent values. i may not understand why its a deal breaker, but i am not going to try and convince them to chance there mind. thinking about it i can understand why they would have first person battles:
    1. its a remake of a very early dragon quest game. even if the remake will give more quality of life stuff for the game, they probably won't make unnecessary changes. they will probably try and keep the game as close as possible to the original to not alienate the old school fans.
    2. there is a tech issues. from the few clips you showed, in battle, the charecters models hold whatever weapon they have equip on screen. now that is fine, but making the battles in 3rd person would add a lot of work for the developers. you will need to make frames of charecters weilding the weapons, them attacking with the weapons, moving on the battlefield, defending, casting and the gadabout goof-offs. you would have to make a ton of frames and animations for charecters using each weapon (and double the amount for the girls because they also have swimsuit models). by the time you try and caculate the number of stuff you would have to make, you will immediatly decied to go 1st person because that is what will allow you to make the game on a deadline.
and you couldn't use the fact 8-11 had 3rd person battles because those games were 3d games with 3d models. also, its when they went 3d, that dragon quest charecters also put limits on what kind of weapons a charecter can equip. starting with 8, characters started to be limited in what they equip. early dragon quest games had the charecters equip whatever they come across.

This is a franchise that I'd like to get into, and while I do think that someone labeling this as a dealbreaker is being ridiculous (The gamers who said the same about the font in the Final Fantasy remasters come to mind), I do see it as disappointing. The main draw to me when compared to the collected mobile port trilogy is that they put so much work into the animation of the enemies, so why not give the heroes the same treatment? Why remake a game if it's not to improve every aspect you're capable to? Why not satisfy everybody by giving the player an option to toggle between what is essentially zoom settings on a camera? I love Earthbound but the whole not seeing your characters battle thing is one of its aspects that I think lessened the experience. As someone who often isn't gripped by RPGs, seeing my party battle could help me get into the game more easily rather than seeing them as mechanical experiences.

Instead we got what I now know is the battle system of other dq games where you select all their moves at once before they play out in succession. Oh well.

^_@ THAT is your deal-breaker? Dude, have you EVER played a Dragon Quest game before? They are ALL in first-person combat.

Oh wow I had no idea, definitely won’t be getting it now, not a big fan of that dungeon crawler battle system apart from the censorship of the game.

My guess it's either people don't like the idea of first person view in battle or the whole woke thing about changing the characters gender and edits something like the Troll's lips that pisses people off. The whole first person view in battle does sound disappointing. But it's not an big problem and won't ruined the game. That's just stupid. Now the whole Type A & Type B rather than just saying Male or Female gender and changing lip thing I can kinda understand why people are upset with it. But let's not forget this isn't the first time something like this happened. Elden Ring & other games before this game has the Type A & Type B as well and they edited Toriyama's characters from the past. Like Mr. Popo from Dragon Ball.
