Five minutes of flawlessly executed, multi-transitional brilliance. Their record company pushed them for years to produce a radio friendly single. This was their response. Astounding.
Hence the line, BUT GLITTERING PRIZES AND ENDLESS COMPROMISES, CHALLENGE THE ILLUSION OF INTEGRITY. Talk about saying f you to the record companies, in a nice way. BRILLIANT.
The best part is that they had already rejected compromising their vision and integrity when they recorded 2112. That was their response to the demand of a “hit single.” Rush rules! 👊🏻
I can't tell you what a joy it is to see you "young-uns" rocking out to this amazing band. This trio was on a level not matched by many mortals, before or since. Believe me, we KNOW how lucky we were to be teens in the late '70s, early '80s. Man, we rocked out!
I am a 57 year old man, blubbering like a baby...... so many wonderful people (who are now passed on) filling so many great memories dancing around these tunes.....
I was a 16 year old boy in 1980 who waited months for the release of this album. Placed the disc on my stereo and flew away to uncharted lands. Ran around for months to all my friends, "Dude! You have to hear this!!" I still feel that thrill every time this song plays. Happy to see the younger generation "Getting it". Cheers.
The speed at which they are playing and filling the air with notes is astonishing... especially how clear and crisp it all remains without getting muddy. Because all three of them are absolutely killing it. The guitar riff is rapid and complex. The drumline has super fast triples going. The bass and keyboards as well. It's just insane. The adrenaline this one causes is amazing. Got to see it live once, and oh dear God was it electric.
Not only was Neil Peart a master drummer, his lyrics can be just as amazing. It took me 30 years of listening to this song before I caught the connection between his lyrics during the reggae parts to the classic song by Simon and Garfunkel "The Sound of Silence". Neil takes the lyrics to that famous song from the more innocent "peace and love" era of rock and spins them into how that innocence was lost via music's commercialization and the demands made of the artists by the music industry. "For the words of the PROFITS (was "prophets" in the original) were written on the studio (was "subway" in the original) walls- a concert hall ("and tenement halls" ). And echoes with the sound- of SALESMEN" ("the sound of silence" in S&G's version). Clever.
@@scottstewart5784 "Today I Learned" Part B: Neil Peart makes another Simon and Garfunkel reference on side 2 of the same album on the track "Entre Nous": "We are islands to each other, building hopeful bridges on a troubled sea." This is a nod to the song "Bridge Over Troubled Water". You're welcome!
Thank you, CygnusKG. I came in to the comments to specifically point out the tie-in to The Sound of Silence. Your detailed breakdown of what Peart did with the lyrics is exactly the explanation needed.
64 year old Torontonian here. Two stories about Rush, which I've mentioned on other channels. The radio station they were talking about CFNY, was a really great station back in the late 70's, early 80's, and they would have such a great mix of music playing. Over the course of a day, they would be playing the newest post punk out of England, some reggae, heavy metal, weird art rock, lots of local bands trying to get their start, just endless change, whatever they wanted to play, they played, no corporate influence. Second is Rush played my high school in 1972 for a school "dance". Cost me $1.25 to get in and they played in the cafeteria on a bunch of tables pushed together to make a stage. They played a few songs off the first album which wasn't out at the time (the original drummer John Rutsey was still with them) and some Zeppelin and Hendrix covers. They played a lot of bars in Toronto and around southern Ontario, but one way to get us kids who were too young to get into bars to hear them was to play high schools. Saw them countless times after that, including the 3 night stand at Massey Hall when they recorded "All The World's A Stage".
Love Rush! ❤️❤️❤️ You are so right all the changes in the tempo were to reflect different radio channels. Please react La Villa Strangiato. Alex Lifeson's guitar work will blow you away!!
I love this! 42 years ago I heard this tune and it was my introduction to Rush. Saw my first show in Dubuque, Iowa in Feb of 81. Moving Pictures Tour. I love seeing today's hip youth discover this music just like I did. It validated the feelings I had at the time. You cats make us old guys feel young again! Now do side one from 2112! It will BLOW your mind. Trust us old Rush stoners from the day!! LOL
I saw Rush in the early 80’s, live in San Francisco!! The best concert ever!! I’m 62 and still listen to them almost daily!! It’s still hard to believe Niel Peart is gone forever. RIP Niel ❤️
I only saw Rush once, in 1980, and it was their first concert of the Permanent Waves Tour. I recently found an audio bootleg recording of the San Francisco (Daly City) date for that tour on UA-cam. This would have been almost 2 months after the concert I saw. It was great to hear the concert again after more than forty years. The set list, according to Set List FM was the same as the concert I saw. ua-cam.com/video/ciaFPI4oHJk/v-deo.htmlsi=cBGdewMoC2os4m4r
Ryan, I just love re-living all my favorite music of the last 45 years through your eyes & ears. Seeing you experience these classics for the first time is such a joy. Another kind of similar song lyrically, please React to Triumph's "Magic Power." Also about the power of radio to lift one's life and spirit.
The Three Bobbing Heads. LOL You guys are great. I love watching your generation enjoying the music I grew up with 40-50 yrs ago. YIKES, I'm THAT old ??!!
Back in the early-80s on the weekends, alternative music focused 102.1 CFNY used to send their DJs out into the Toronto clubs to broadcast their full shifts live from the dance floors. It was a cool concept that made the radio listener really want to join in. It also gave CFNY world wide recognition before the advent of the internet. Many a weekend we would hop in a buddies car and drive an hour or more to Niagara Falls NY to hit the clubs down there listening to DJs Martin Street and Chris Shepard all the way. Good memories
"All this machinery making modern music - Can still be open-hearted - Not so coldly charted, it's really just a question of your honesty, yeah, your honesty - One likes to believe in the freedom of music - But glittering prizes and endless compromises - Shatter the illusion of integrity, yeah" - Such a great truth bomb hiding in a song about the radio. How relevant is that still today? Neil you were something! RIP
I've seen RUSH live at least 6...7 times! There is no better sound of that intro when RUSH takes the stage! After that album...they opened all their shows with it! ***I cry knowing I'll never see them again!***
This rock classic was written by their late great drummer Neil Pearl. The Spirit of Radio is a banger that is a feel good song that sends possible vibes by all who hear it. Two of my favorite Rush songs are Tom Sawyer and The underrated Roll the Bones.
The entire introduction of this song from the “get go”!! It’s the bass that gets me.. Lee gets down! This trio just makes magic happen! It’s poetry in motion where they’re always in sync.. Music geniuses!! I can’t say enough about this group.. this was a staple band in our home! My brother was so inspired by this band, he picked up drumming and never missed a concert.. Can’t say enough accolades about this band. I miss them. RIP Neil Peart Jan.2020 How many bands can make music with the synthesizer and the bass guitar like Lee Getty!! Alex so calm cool and collected all the time.. just watch their live concerts on UA-cam.. their shows were always so mesmerizing… we couldn’t get enough watching them live in concert!! Everybody having such a great time.. this music just brings back all those memories!! I love it ❤️
Great reaction guys! Glad to see you appreciating one of the best bands in the world. I'm 70 years old and have been loving this band since 1968 and seeing you young guys genuinely enjoying them make this old man smile!
I saw Rush in concert twice, back in the '80's, and there were times that it was hard to believe it was just three guys onstage. Besides an amazing light and laser show, their live music sounded so full and the production and mix were flawless. So glad I was able to see them when I did.
Im in Toronto, they are putting out a 40th Aniversy of Moving Pictures, what is cool there are a a lot perks, but a 1981 concert from Maple Leaf Gardens never released was yeah ok,i was there, they would play New Years Eve 2 years in a row, yeah i was there, im now close to 62,saw thier names on high school marques when riding my bike around in Scarborough, dam i am old.
Lol, at first I thought you meant you were 53 when you discovered them in 81. I started doing some quick math & figured it was unlikely you’d be watching reaction videos & leaving comments at 94, though I’m sure crazier things occur all the time🙂
I saw RUSH live 6 times from 1974 - 1982. I never saw any other bands more than twice. The video for this song made for R30 or R40 celebration is great because it assigns some names from radio at that time, that were pioneering trendsetters of the business!
Now imagine that this 'spirit of radio', which was the motto of the radio station in Toronto (CFNY-FM 102.1) that this song was dedicated to, was playing around the time people were loyally listening to that rebel station. A time when most other FM stations had succumbed to the pressures of corporate radio commercialism. CFNY would, prophetically, fall victim to the same pressures, but for the moment, they were still a beacon of independence on the radio scene. This song will always be my favourite Rush tune because of its historical significance and just how bloody great that station was in its heyday. Long live the spirit of radio.
“It echos with the sound of salesman!” I worked in radio in the day and was one of those “salesmen” (Account Reps) Getty referred to. There was NO job I loved more and working in Radio was so freaking fun!
My first concert was Rush in 1976 I was 13 years old. It was at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago. Tickets were like $10 It was the All the World's a Stage tour. Setlist was the same as the live Album.
RUSH one of my all-time favorite band ever, i LOVE this song!! A good rock song about radio is from a one hit wonder band named Autograph and the song is Turn Up The Radio, i love this song, came out in 1984. Try this one!! Keep up the good work!!
Their studio is out in the woods in Canada so it's definitely awesome to see you guys digging this music! Always remember that is just three people too!
Holy $hit, I never made that connection that the middle dude made towards the beginning about Alex’s beginning riff sounding like flipping thru stations on the radio. Been listening to Rush for 36 years (I’m youngish), never made that connection….props dude
For those old enough to remember twist tuning a car radio, I've always loved how this song 'dials' to the rock bit, then to the reggae bit, then to the rock anthem bit, then back the reggae bit. I remember doing that: trying to decide between different stations, playing different favourite songs on at the same time. It even starts off with that 'hunting' sound of moving the dial past the station and then doubling back.
Please do another song by this legendary band, la Villa Strangiato. Rush has been the greatest soundtrack to my childhood. When we say we’re RUSH fans is an understatement.
First time here…great reaction guys! I’ve seen Rush 15 times live. When they play this song live, when the “concert hall” line is sung, the lights point out to the audience and the crowd erupts in cheers! No backing track needed…it’s a surreal experience. Masterful song. 😎
I was in high school when I first heard this song in 1980, I was blown away , there’s something about this song to this day that puts a smile on my face every time I hear it. As a 40+ year Rush fan I look forward to more great reactions , keep rockin guys!
First Rest In Peace Neil Peart🙏 I've Loved Rush for almost 42 years now ? I really didn't Love any particular musical group at the age of 12 1/2 but when i started hanging with a dude named Perry Lopez who Loved Rush, (now I don't know how he introduced me to their music, must have been a cassette tape or album he brought with him to my house) I couldn't believe how complicated their tunes were! All the other music on the radio, wbcn, or 94HJY, or wcoz, was good and all but Rush tunes made me work a little bit harder to figure out each song they had, it wasn't the boring verse, chorus, verse, chorus simple to understand and copy tune, Rush's music was hard to figure out and I freakin loved that, plus even back then they were master musicians, no three chord progression, or simple drum beats, or singing about partying and hot chicks, this stuff was DEEP and Very complex !! Their music also changed with the times, 80's 90's 2000's 2010's...Their music helped me through alot of TOUGH TOUGH times. It was an honor to have been alive during their Reign. God Bless them, all of you, Stay Positive & Keep Moving Forward ♥️🙏
Glad to run across your channel! I am a Rush fanatic from Louisville and this song is one of their best ever. Love seeing young people appreciate their brilliance.#RIPNeil❤️🩹❤️🩹❤️🩹
Rush has to be the G.O.A.T. band.....I cant think of any band with this level of instrumental proficiency at all levels. Tool is a very, very,......very distant second.
I grew up listening to Rush. It's great to have their music played for those who have yet to experience it. Always keep in mind that only three people were in Rush and always keep in mind that they could pull off live what they recorded in the studio. They were nothing short of phenomenal.
I saw Rush so many times over almost 40 years, and that song was ALWAYS one of the best! It was always a joy to hear them play it. It's an amazing and unique and wonderful song!
You really only hear this kind of tight playing, snap sync and zero instrument lag in a band who know each other this well, trust each other this much and love their instruments to this degree. Once in 50yr kind of band.
Radio is the entire point...radio, for all it's faults, made modern music...Is hard to realize but we heard the Beatles, Stones, Everyone on the radio....You fellows have No idea how it was back in the day, was all, ALL we had! No inet, no cell phones, had the dial phones, Yes, I am an old dude, but the spirit lives! Radio is still amazing, and , like they said, basically free, when FM first came out, was such a trip! Some dude would get on, you could tell he was stoned or at least comfortable, and they would play an entire album or album side, Rush did props just as Queen which came along much later, called it radio Gaga, Rush was warning of that...salesmen...I wish you guys all the best, that was a Great react! Take some time to really think about it...is worth it
Now imagine listening to that song, live!! I had the privilege, on March 4, 1986 to be at Rush's show in Montreal, with "The Spirit of Radio" as the opening song... 😛 Marillion had been the opening act, playing the whole "Misplaced Childhood" album. And Rush took over, setting the stage for the whole evening with this song... awestruck!
This song proves that innovation and musicianship are valuable in every era, The gift of music to humanity is vital for our ability to relate to total strangers, The people who were inspired by Rush, were my friends who wanted to be drummers and bass players, People who influenced by them became members of bands like Motley Crue, Metallica, Anthrax, Pantara, and they still have that effect now, it's fkn awesome 💜
Five minutes of flawlessly executed, multi-transitional brilliance. Their record company pushed them for years to produce a radio friendly single. This was their response. Astounding.

It still gets played on Canadian Radio
So good
Fly by night?

What about Geddy Lee's Amazing vocals, bass and keyboards
Same age. Yup.
brother, I am about to have 10 years on you, but I feel the same!

You have to hear this!!" I still feel that thrill every time this song plays. Happy to see the younger generation "Getting it". Cheers.
My experience was exactly like yours back then as a teenager whose world was shaken by this epic song and album by one of the greatest bands ever!
Then, at some point, you realize the singer is also playing bass and keyboards.
#forthewin
RUSH is the epitome of a beautiful Synergy !! Much love to a new generation willing to rediscovering some honesty
ALL OF THIS MACHINERY MAKING MODERN MUSIC BY THREE ROCK MASTERS FROM TORONTO, CANADA.
Three of the top musicians at their craft. How could it be bad? In my opinion, they are the best band ever. RIP Neil.
MASTERPIECE 😮
My 17 year old nephew can bust this out on bass. I just turned 50. It's kind of unbelievable when he comes over and hangs out. He makes me proud.
"One likes to believe in the freedom of music, but glittering prizes and endless compromises, shatters the illusion of integrity" Poetry.

First☝️of all, Rip 🪦 to the best drummer 🥁 of all time Neil Peart, Rush has great 👍 music 🎶. U guys need to react to Genesis 1987 Abacab live video.
More than a drummer.. he was a true percussionist. Neil was The Professor. That wasn't a drum kit as much as it was a full percussion orchestra.
Rush had a sparkle in the background of all their songs. It sparkles.
Neil, RIP, is THE premier Drummer. Geddy is an incredible bassist. Took far too long to get into the rock and roll hall of fame. Great reaction gents
I met my first husband at a Rush concert December 1977 in Dayton, Ohio. Still have the ticket stub! 😊

I saw them in Toronto twice. Grace under pressure tour and Subdivisions. What an excellent experience
My first concert was a RUSH......
Being a person who is mentally in flow with knowledge.....
Their showmanship was second to none.

Pink Floyd and Rush are on top of my list!
Love that you pointed out how the guitar intro that Alex wrote, if you see the music chart for guitar, it looks like an FM sine wave.
Triumph's song Magic Power is another ode to radio and the impact music can have on us. Great track!

The various breaks in the song represent changing radio stations. Genius. Rush is the greatest.
I've always though how cool it was when the bass and drums play exactly the same thing in the intro.
The greatest ever - Rush!
The constant change up's. Flawless, seamless transitions as if they all share and play through the same ❤️. Outstanding as usual for Rush.
That song just sounds like joy...
my favorite rush song, came out when i was a senior in high school. loved it then, love it now!

I heard that they prearranged every aspect of the music down to 1/20th of a second. That is how they all go off on a tangent exactly in sync.
RIP Neil. The Professor, the Goat.In the Early 70s.They were a bar band.Imagine that on a Friday at the Gasworks in Toronto a local live rock bar.?
First time here…great reaction guys! I’ve seen Rush 15 times live. When they play this song live, when the “concert hall” line is sung, the lights point out to the audience and the crowd erupts in cheers! No backing track needed…it’s a surreal experience. Masterful song. 😎
I was in high school when I first heard this song in 1980, I was blown away , there’s something about this song to this day that puts a smile on my face every time I hear it. As a 40+ year Rush fan I look forward to more great reactions , keep rockin guys!
as a 63+ Rush fan............
First Rest In Peace Neil Peart🙏
I've Loved Rush for almost 42 years now ?
Such a full beautiful sound from a 3 piece. Peart ❤
You boys crack me up. If I'm ever in town steaks and beer on me.
Glad to run across your channel! I am a Rush fanatic from Louisville and this song is one of their best ever. Love seeing young people appreciate their brilliance.#RIPNeil❤️🩹❤️🩹❤️🩹
Hey Suzi! Fancy seeing you here!
@@tomtompkins7546 Hey Tom! Small Rush world it is.
The ultimate song from the ultimate band. Rush.....there is NO substitute.
Rush has to be the G.O.A.T. band.....I cant think of any band with this level of instrumental proficiency at all levels. Tool is a very, very,......very distant second.
Have you ever heard of YES??
@@dougreed2257 a poor man's Rush, at best.
This song changed my life back in 1980 & got me hooked on a band that I've spent the next 42 years loving. A great band to believe in.
CFNY's promotional catchphrase was "The Spirit of Radio" in the late 70s.
Great reaction guys. This song is old, but NEVER gets old. Take care.
Love Peart's illiterations. Magic Music Makes your Morning Move!! 🌄
You really only hear this kind of tight playing, snap sync and zero instrument lag in a band who know each other this well, trust each other this much and love their instruments to this degree.
Once in 50yr kind of band.
Rush definitely they’re own sound! ❤
Forget that -Absolutely EPIC " "rush la villa strangiato " -their 2nd best song eh
Neil Peart.. the greatest rock drummer of all time. R.I.P. 🥁
i am from Canada so rush was big in their day heard them a lot.
Next time you react to a Rush song, might I suggest Subdivisions? It's very powerful...musically & lyrically. Thanks, guys!
Take some time to really think about it...is worth it
Wow, their music is like being in a vortex of their music! Yes!
Now imagine listening to that song, live!! I had the privilege, on March 4, 1986 to be at Rush's show in Montreal, with "The Spirit of Radio" as the opening song... 😛
Marillion had been the opening act, playing the whole "Misplaced Childhood" album. And Rush took over, setting the stage for the whole evening with this song... awestruck!
This song proves that innovation and musicianship are valuable in every era,
The gift of music to humanity is vital for our ability to relate to total strangers,
The people who were inspired by Rush, were my friends who wanted to be drummers and bass players,
People who influenced by them became members of bands like Motley Crue, Metallica, Anthrax, Pantara, and they still have that effect now, it's fkn awesome 💜
Love love love this song! So different and such a complex arrangement
Great song to start your day.
