Tattoos and Trauma

- Tattoos have become more acceptable over the years but are often only seen as having decorative value.
My guest #DonnaTorrisi has written a book about the connection between tattoos and trauma.
While a tattoo sits only on the skin, the meaning of tattoos may be much deeper for some individuals, telling a story of a difficult time in their lives, a loss or a story of abuse.
In this way, tattoos are a form of self-expression that can tell you something about the person and their life’s journey. We heal from trauma in many ways…tattoos are one of those ways.
In this episode, you will learn:
1. How tattoos can create a bond between people who have experienced difficult life circumstances.
2. How body markings can play a part in healing from trauma.
3. Whether Dr. Carolyn has a tattoo and if yes, why?
QUOTES: A tattoo is skin deep but its meaning can tell a much deeper story of pain and trauma.

Wow am I the only person over 60 that doesn’t have a tattoo?.
No, you are not.
Nope
69 yo - no disfigurement
64, I servived the military without getting tattooed.
none for me. my body isn't a canvas.
A woman with multiple tattoos tells me all I need to know about them.
Avoid
Plenty of trauma.
Trauma= 🍆
Yes, run like hell!
Avoid women with any tattoo. Even a little butterfly on her ankle. It just means she has to follow the trends instead of bucking them.
I try and avoid most women but if I see a tatt I do my best to ghost them out.
this is a very informative presentation. i'm familiar with some women who experienced physical traumas of one kind or another, and "the elephant in the room" so to speak, is the possibility that they have a masochistic tendency. the tragedy of such a situation is not only the lack of logic behind adding further mutilation to your life, but the deeply-seated psychological belief that such pain is legitimate. the masochistic nature of tatooing has to be related to the absence of a care-taker or a mentor at the early stages of life or specific trauma.
It's a form of self-trashing
No graffiti here, at 65!
I hate kim Kardashian but i do agree with one thing she responded when asked why she has no tattoos her answer... have you ever seen a Rolls-Royce royce with a bumper sticker😂😂😂
*Rolls*
When I was a little girl I loved watching historical documentaries ( i still love them ) and I was watching about the Armenian genocide were the women where taken by the ottomans to become sex slaves and they got tattooed by their captors as a mark of ownership or during the holocaust where people got their number as a tatoo.Tattoos make me think of these moments in history. I never got anything ,i dont even have my ears pierced.
A woman's body count is directly proportional to the number and size of tattoos.... just an observation
Tattoos on a woman. Is like a work of art with magic marker scribbling.
I can see now why women say they do this for themselves. It's all about them. It is very trauma-based, and personal, and has nothing to do with loving or caring about others at all. It's super ugly, but the woman doesn't care about anyone but herself so that does not matter to her. It is helpful for men to know to stay far far away from them.
Exactly. Tattooed women = Toxic women.
I don’t tattoo my body because I don’t want something permanent on my skin. I cannot commit to that. I also have never really seen a tattoo that I thought truly truly looked good. Tattoos just look 'busy' and 'cluttered' on people. They don't 'go' with everything you wear. Sometimes they clash...hard. They are painful to get. And if I want to express myself artistically in my own appearance...it's call jewelry and fashion accessories.
tatts = socially acceptable self-harm
That and nose piercings. It doesn't look good on anyone and their friends just lie to them and tell them it looks good and makes them unique.
It Screams BPD.
How come though? I'm curious. What's the correlation?
@@MA-ts3xs Never thought about it like that but you're absolutely right. Thanks for the insight. I have zero tattoos and have always noticed the crazier/looser/more impulsive women were always covered in them.
@@JohnDoe-cd6ro There not are crazy they are emotionally unstable????.#Run,#Run …..
Self mutilation has always been a hallmark of mental illness
Thank u for calling me out ima just head home 😂
I think it’s important to note that women with tattoos have a lack of respect for themselves and show patterns of poor boundaries and not a strong relationship with their father usually.
IMO, women who get visual tattoos (neck, face, whole arm, whole back, have been through trauma. Tattoos have become bastardized.
I hate them.
I find them repulsive on both sexes.
I don't even believe in false eyelashes.
I have a viscerally negative reaction when I see a woman with a tattoo. It just screams, "I am damaged!" I'm sure there are plenty of examples of healthy people with tattoos, but it remains a huge red flag for trouble ahead.
Ever heard of projection?
It’s true, there’s a reason almost all swers have so many tattoos
Tattoo or not, almost everyone has issues.
The defining trait is, are they open and willing enough to work on their own problems.
@@Getout249 many don’t though and some are well adjusted particularly if they don’t have drug or alcohol problems.
I went out with a woman who was not a SW who had four large tattoos and piercings and she was by far the craziest woman I’ve ever dated and i will never agree to date another one as the drama was not worth it or want a baby in an unrealistic timeframe!
@@ianarn “many don’t” literally 9/10 from my own experience. I’ve gone to so many stripcclubs and virtually every girl is covered in tats head to toe. Tattoos are proven with studies to be a form of self mutilation and signs of personality disorders. I would never date a girl with tattoos seriously. Same goes for dudes, there’s a reason most prisoners and criminals get tattoos.
I don’t know what the truth is… But when I see a woman with a lot of tattoos… That’s what I see and I ask the question… Who got you? I think it’s someway of exterior rising the internalized trauma.
This is beyond sick. Especially the wolf thing. Good God. I think it's masochistic. Self-hatred.
If it helps people heal from life and the trauma it brings with it, why would be against it?
Often the mental pain people are forced to endure is far worse than the physical pain of the tattoo
@@XxKamaelxXcuz they don’t “heal” .. cluster Bs DO NOT change . They just move along destroying one life after another . I personally love that they mark themselves. Let’s me know who to avoid
@@XxKamaelxX It's a coping mechanism that doesn't work. Instead of seeking some form of therapy or getting involved with hobbies or interests to let them move on, they relive the trauma with a tattoo they will see daily.
So no, there's no healing going on there if you're reliving it daily. It just demonstrates poor reasoning and the inability to consider long term consequences.
Tattoos say a LOT. Most people who have them, esp. women, are damaged.
Tattoos can become addictive.
women have a bird/flock mentality.. one does..and the rest follows
I am a leader. Most follow me. My own ideas. No tats. I don't follow other women. I am a woman.
@@edwardwigglesworth-iu7rx wow dude I think your should stay away from women. Because you know nothing. All or nothing opinions are red flags
Tattoos = red flags, and they look like infections no matter how pretty they pretend to be.
They remind me of the horrible disfiguring and discoloration on bodies that have been in a raging flood.
@@DHW256 it's a waste of money too. People have said it's a display of wealth, though poor impulse control is more likely.
Classic cases of ACE Adverse Childhood Experience Syndrome
Borderlines
I am sorry, but I cannot understand why people are getting tattoos. They are expensive and painful. Lower income people should not waste any money on tattoos. Trauma is not a good excuse.
@@Kaohukreations the hu-man capacity for self deception is almost limitless
@@Kaohukreations Lol delusional. Going to some dump to constantly get pierced and inked screams masochistic psychological issues.
Uh, yeah, because 95% tattoos we are seeing reflect such. Not to be mean but most tattoos in my neck of the woods have little to do with such.
@@Kaohukreationswhat a gigantic red flag you are 😂
sadly, you're right
Tattoos seem a bit counter intuitive in a sense: if you have trauma and this is your escape, well its a big picture on your skin reminding you of why you got it aka your trauma
These comments are sad.
Read Luke 6:37…. Then ask yourself these questions: Was this about trying to understand something unknown to you in order to deepen your empathy and understanding of the human condition? Or was it about feeling superior to others because you think looking “clean” actually makes you so?
Read the bible !!!
Our bodies are a temple for the holy spirt.
Yes when I saw someone with one tatto mm ok but all body the person scream I’m damaged
And maybe the tattoos helped that person to accept and heal from that trauma. You don't know where in their journey they are.
Trauma Brain 🧠 or Learning Brain 🧠 Choose Wisely
What about people who say it’s art ?
"Trauma creates damaged women but said trauma creates strong men" ...
That appears to be demonstrably true. The mental capacity for stress between men and women are noticeably different but yet academia wants to play make-believe and pretend it is all just a social construct.
Trauma physically changes the human brain. But good point. Guess it all depends on the individual and how they chose to present this change to the rest of the world. Either way, if it's not our trauma, then it's not our business.... just wonder why more people don't worry about themselves and instead spend their lives focused on other people's liabilities . All this does is create stigma and negativity in the mass collective consciousness of this world... because I'm assuming that the mass majority of people who are talking about others' trauma are not trying to understand it to the degree that they hope themselves to experience their own trauma and, therefore, lies my case. To each their own...we are all here for a reason...what is yours?
It’s Human Aposematism
Did she interview any people that were sorry they got tattoos? What was their outlook?
Hello
Tramp stamps ughh
A tramp stamp is automatically 20 bodies
I have tattoos on my fingers - all of them. It's been hard dealing with the pain of losing my parents and being rejected by extended family and past friends and relationships, so I had to release the pain in someway.
I've met many people who have gotten their tattoos after a personal breakthrough, or personal tragedy (death of a loved one) I have a lot of respect for people with tattoos. They literally wear their heart on their sleeve.
Tattoos are like bumper stickers 👍
Hmmm...very westernised views presented here. For me, they express the shamanic part of me, their meaning are spiritual, and beyond words attributed through any religion.
No I over with the bullshit..Younger women cater to my wants and desires and happy they have an older man ..
So, you basically pay them to ACT like they like/respect you. Poor fella.
