Driving 3 Lego Mechanisms in Orbeez Pool

  • Demonstration of 3 basic mechanics of Lego technic, such as a walker (or stepper), wheel and track mechanisms in a pool with Orbeez balls.
Orbeez (or hydrogel) a type of polymer made to absorb and hold water. It's also called water beads. They are soft and slippery, a difficult surface for any mechanism to move.

For tracks, typically it's the overall surface that helps in mud, etc. "Ground pressure" is the concept you're looking for.
Wider tracks is, of course, an obvious way to go. However, if you look at WWI tanks, designed for crossing capacity above all else, you'll find going *long* really helps (see the monstrous sausage that the TOG II is).
All in all, a single, long continuous track with all the weight low in the center would be optimal.
Assuming, of course, you don't want to cheat and make some kind of aircraft...

STEPS with the surface of the body the length of the feet extended forward and backward, and with the rods used in TRACKS on the body and feet.
You are trying to float and push mass back, surface and drag is the answer

I noticed with the tracks you dont have roadwheels to help spread out ground preasure, the ilder and sprocket are the only point of contact that preasure is put on making it have a higher ground preasure if you had put wheels along the tracks from the ilder to the sprocket it would be able to displace weight better, for refrence look at a tank's tracks.

The testing pool was too shallow to properly test the tracks; they were running on the pool floor, not over the orbs.
The tracks also needed a skid plate like what was added to the wheels. A proper bow might help too. Longer tracks with angled leading edges might help with climbing out of the pool, or possibly just a larger front sprocket. Shorter teeth would reduce drag especially as the top of the tracks reaches the orb level, no sense in just mixing orbs next to you.
Wheels could need more wheels per axel, and more axles, ground pressure is key after all. Perhaps using more of the holes in the wheel hub would allow more torque with less slop?
Double-wide tracks for the highest ground contact, surounding rather than carrying the cargo box for a low centre of gravity, might be the ultimate tracked contender. Perhaps even splitting the tracks into forward and rear sections for more length and power units?

Longer track length, keep the 'growser' bars to act as paddles. Or if you can double the width of the tracks make the tracks wider and half again as long as they are shown in this video. Plate over the bottom. It seems to just be a weight distribution issue more than anything.

For the wheels and tracks you added grippy bars to grab onto the breeze which gave them more traction. But did no such thing for the stepper. Perhaps it would have performed better if it had them running along the bottom (maybe even more so than the wheels)

  • @OutrunRewind
    @OutrunRewind 5 місяців тому

i would say wheels are a bit of a dead end here since orbeez are not very dense and thus wheels dig into them easily
on balance, the stepper could be immediately improved by having another surface under the center, gives it more surface area to place its weight on the orbeez
same idea can be applied to tracks, make em longer and wider while keeping the weight to a minimum. less weight + larger surface contact = better performance, but you should also add road wheels to actually make use of all that extra surface area gained from lengthening the tracks, otherwise it's of no use

It's not fair that the feet and belly of the "steps" vehicle weren't upgraded in the same way as the wheels and tracks. The "steps" vehicle clearly has potential when it comes to (not) sinking, so why not get rid of its obvious grip issue and see how far it can really go? This kind of bias/shortsightedness just ruins these videos for me: some concepts are dismissed early, essentially "rigged to lose", by deliberately leaving out fairly obvious improvements.
