    I understand about not hunting them ,but not being able to pick the feather is stupid.

      Picking up the feather is illegal because the government can't prove you didn't poach it...

      Yeah I agree because I have a blue jay feather and when I see a feather I pick it up because I can't resist.

      @@orionsmithey3009Yep. There are legitimate crimes being committed by the same people saying it's "illegal" to collect bird feathers. Not buying it. For many, feathers are a cultural and spiritual connection with the land, animals, spirits/other beings or their ancestors. I'm not falling for the legalese game.

    I can't help myself. There's a field with a tree where there is a Hawk's nest.. and during the days as they swoop at predators, they lose feathers. I have collected 8 beautiful feathers over the past few weeks. They're going to open Alcatraz back up for me😩

    Honestly its an old law that should be tweaked. I'd understand to some degree if it was a threatened or endangered species. I have feathers from a sandhill crane and a black vulture. I found the loose feathers in my yard.

    Anyone else remember when the government used the MBTA to steal Geronimo's headdress even though Deming had a letter from Geronimo's son and pictures to prove he had it legally? That's the problem with these laws. The government used them to enrich themselves.

      The government has always tried to snub our indigenous culture. I agree with protecting and preserving our birds. In a lot of native culture feathers are seen as a gift from our creator. Not our fault idiots were trigger happy. They did the same thing with the Iyanee and they are just now starting to make a comeback to their native lands

    I didn't care before but now I want to collect as many bald eagle feathers as a can. Now I just need to find out where they are most populated.

      Go ahead. It's good for you and your mental health. I do it, but I'm in the uk where it's not illegal, but I think the American law is a stupid personal opinion.

      @@IamliMinal188I find the commons law (is that the correct name?) you all have there interesting. Although I heard that it's not as widely available as it used to be and that now farmers can own shotguns. But idk if the latter is recent or not

    When I was younger in the late 80s and early 90s, I used to see this program televised on national TV discouraging the use of DDT. And there was this book mentioned entitled "Silent Spring". I never got to read that book, but it did have a huge impact on my attitude towards birds.
    I searched why it is illegal to own bald eagle feathers but I didn't see the connection with poaching and the protection of wildlife. Thank you for talking about US Laws protecting birds. ♥

    • @richtawney9877
      @richtawney9877 9 місяців тому +1

      Silent Spring was sensationalized fiction. And, the banning of DDT coincided with the enforcement of the illegality killing of raptors negating any ability to tell which helped the populations. DDT is still being used in much of the world and is not having these effects where it is currently being used.

    Isn’t it quite something that those who can and cannot possess eagle feathers (and others) for their religious practice is down to who is and isn’t the correct race; just look at the case of Samuel Ray Wilgus who was taken in by the Southern Paiute Nation and became a member of their religious order was persecuted for his religion based on him being the incorrect race and faulty judicial resoning
    And before you get into the federally recognized tribe/political offiliation BS there isn’t a single tribe that doesn’t use Blood Quantum or Lineal descent as a requiset for citizenship and routinely give and strip it away based on the whim of whatever finding their office makes

      Fuck the law that says no feather collecting. As long as I didn’t hurt the bird it shouldn’t matter. Those of us blessed to have the feathers should keep them.

  • @rackzonrackz1153

    1918 really update the law I'm sure there's plenty of bald eagles if I find one in the wild I'm going to keep that shit .ridiculous

    • @P.W.R.
      @P.W.R. 2 роки тому

      Yeah this is retarded. To my surprise, this law was going be updated back in 2020, but it was shot down because it will "harm the birds." We don't want to harm birds, just update what the law covers. Simply finding a feather shouldn't land you with big fines or jail time. That's stupid!
      Updating it probably would have gotten rid of the ridiculous "can't keep feathers" garbage. You can't hunt protected or endangered species so it's not like people can go out and hunt birds just for feathers.
      Lame.

    It is legal to hunt and kill certain migratory birds. Even National Wildlife Refuges offer blinds from which to shoot birds. Those birds do not need to be plucked before being transported home. It is also legal to hunt and kill certain non-migratory birds such as pheasant, grouse and quail. Ducks Unlimited is an organization of hunters which greatly benefits migratory waterfowl.
