NOTES: The young man in the video is Sekine-san's son. It's a family business and he's the owner of the store. He gets help from local kids to plant the seeds so it's not just him out there :P He didn't use any known pesticides and there were some beetles and bugs in there but not many. John you have inspired us to visit japan. Before watching your videos Disney land was my favourite destination. But after watching ur videos now its Japan ❤
I really really like the way you talked and explained. I watched every episode that made. Huge thanks for your show. Keep it up and God bless you always!
Very interesting, I've learned so many things about Japan from you, I'm grateful to you. Thank you for your excellent videos, they are very professional.
You create clear, well created, easy to understand videos about Japan - Thank you! Your videos makes me feel like I'm there experiencing it. Only the very best for you!
Great episode! I really like how the show keeps evolving. The drone shots and even the dynamic cameras (cameraman?) that followed you in the interview go a long way to make the show feel even better. Amazing work!
This is the thing about Japan. Every region big and small has unique products. China needs to do this in a much better way somehow. Because of the Cultural Revolution, this type of unique characteristics for each town is lacking. Not totally lacking, but the way the Japanese do this is totally a game changer. It's the attitude and respect that is hard to nurture. This is what localized regional marketing is all about. Watching your video shows how much respect for culture japan the people have nurtured. It's part of our the Japanese do things, and with globalization in most of the world, Japanese is truly going to stay unique.
Are you kidding? Corporate American has raised destroying local character into an art form. Check out the recent history of Dublin (Texas) Dr. Pepper. There's more money to be made by homogenizing and commodifying than the reverse. Plus, I hardly think Edamame is unique. Soybeans are perhaps the most widely grown crop in the world.
I was born and raised in Japan, I grew up eating Edamame every summer yet I didn’t know Edamame is Soybean no mae no dankai. Haha, your way of eating edamame is unique. Today I’m going to plant edamame and hope it will grow well this time. Kono video tukuttekurete arigatou! Nihongo ga umai desine!
thanks so much for this wonderful vlog, I love edamame but had no clue as to the varieties, types, farming methods...thanks! I'm now going to make my way to the freezer to grab that bag of microwavable edamame!!
You're very welcome and thank you for watching this episode on #edamame it was shocked at the number of varieties I didn't know after so long in Japan! Enjoy your edamame Marimo! -john
I was introduced to "Edamame" this past week. I was a little turned off by the exterior. I thought to myself, "This cant be Good". Once I tried it..... I LOVED IT. I will be searching High and Low in my town for this delectable treat.

4 bucks for a packet is pretty expensive. In Sikkim we have a smaller variety of Edamame and it tastes really good. Farmers sell them boiled and it's really cheap but seasonal. Thanks so much for another great high quality episode. You always put so much effort and thoughts in your videos it's inspiring and admirable.
Lin Yiling you're right that it's not cheap but the cost of living and growing produce in Japan is quite high compared to India so we have to go with the market. They're SOLD OUT FAST at this price :p I'd love to try the ones in Sikkim! I wonder how they compare in taste.
Love Edamame as much as your show, its always fresh and tasty!(but your shirt is grungy, ha ha.) Keep up the great work! Hope to see you explore Sato island.
I can't remember how i came accross or discovered your channel or what's the 1st video i watched but it happened just last month. I've shared some of your vlogs on my facebook and some of my friends are now susbscribed to your channel as well. My ultimate dream since i was a kid is to travel Japan, hopefully it will happen soon. Thank you for doing this and thank you for showing the world the wonders of Japan and it's people 🇵🇭
Instagram follower over here! As usual, great content. My maternal grandfather was a farmer in Mexico, he would take my cousins and I out to his fields to harvest edamame, we would boil them and eat them like you. Lovely memories ;)
Yay! Finally a traditionally "Only in Japan" style video! I love this style of video you make and that is what brought me to this channel originally. The Live and Vlog style videos are alright but I am a purest and love this style. I love the educational/informational value about Japan and Japanese culture shown in this format. I know you have been doing a lot more of the other style videos over the past few months and I have watched what I can (Live is hard to catch due to time differences). I know it takes a lot more time and effort to make this style vs. the Vlog style or Live videos but the quality in these is far above the quick and dirty Vlog style. Thanks for keeping these kinds of videos in your repertoire! p.s. I am a hamster style Edamame eater, too!
Fantastic insight about this wonderful bean John. So I've learnt that soya beans are the 'adults' of edamame and never knew there were so many varieties, thought there was just the one. They're popular in UK but around ten years ago you could only find them on traditional Japanese restaurants. Thanks for another great film! 👍🏾😉
+firestar1728 so happy to hear from you!! Thanks for watching. This was a real pleasure to make! Right!! They're much easier to find now but it's hard to find good quality ones. The best are usually grown in your garden :)
Everytime I watch your videos, I always want to go back. I hope you get more subscribers so people can see the best of Japanese culture 👍 Greetings from Philippines
Hi John, just watched the saved live stream in Instagram. Just love your channel, and your enthusiasm. The funniest video was the night festival where you were in the haunted house!! 😂😂😂😂 💖
Came from Instagram. Wished I could catch your lives more often on Instagram & your other UA-cam channel. Think I made it in time 2x only. Like always ❤️ your informational videos.
Arigatogozaimashita John Dabu san, showing all of us in the world about japan, i,m really looking forward to come and visit there in 2020 Olympics or after the Olympics, and you always bring something new in Japan from city life to country life styles from there culture at every angle, but i like to know if there's anybody you met from the Caribbean lives in Japan? or anybody, it may look like a challenge but who knows :) and Arigatogozaimashita again all the way from Trinidad......kanpi
I have never gotten to try Edamame when I was there in Japan. I prefer fresh over frozen. Thanks John for this video. Sorry I missed your live stream but I have been sick lately. 💓❤️
Edamame Tastes So Good. I have been Following you lately n watched most of your videos. My Friend Told me about you. After that i have been viewing n following you. I have also started learning Japanese. I wish to work in Japan n be as you are. After watching your videos I have been trying all the famous food that are available in Japanese Food places in Mumbai India.
+Nikhil Sawant awesome! I'll be visiting Mumbai soon. My mum is from there! Thanks for following Nikhil! I'm curious to see how Japanese food has increased since I was last in Mumbai in 2015!
Hey John great video as always, In Egypt,we have broad beans they look just as Edamame and everyone eat it RAW 😁 you can find it sold on carts in the streets of Cairo ,its not sold in convenient stores or supermarkets though!
Discovered your videos a few days ago when searching for exploring Japan. Have viewed over 20 of them. Awesome! I appreciate the details throughout your sharing the places and experiences of your travels. I have no fluency with the Japanese language. How much of a hindrance might this be traveling throughout the country? If I want to hire a guide/translator, what might this cost? Thank you for any advice you could provide.
Chris Charistas thanks! Haha! There's no real correct way to eat it because I've been doing to hamster method -- and still do! More fun for me so follow your heart, just don't eat the pods!
My grandparents usually harvest a part of the beans they plant (as they're farmers) a bit earlier so that we can enjoy edamame even in the other side of the world. I'm sure it doesn't compare to edamame grown specifically to be eaten, but it's still very tasty! Frozen edamame (even imported from Japan) can be bought, but I prefer the freshness of beans I've literally seen bud and grow. Sekine-san's way of eating the beans is what I've done my whole life, but the older women in my family all eat the "ladies' way". John's is the only one I've literally never seen lol
Edamame is "okish" to me, I don't think it taste of much tbh. Zunda on the other hand.... love it. (maybe it's my sweet tooth talking, lol) Great video John! ^^ Thomas
Thank you for such a very thorough report on soybeans in Japan! 🌞 As an American kitchen-gardener, this is giving me lots of great tips on how to grow soybeans for this year. Thank you!
NOTES: The young man in the video is Sekine-san's son. It's a family business and he's the owner of the store. ONLY in JAPAN This was great info! Thankyou😀🇯🇵
Are you japanese 🤨
I love how happy the elderly man is showing off his farm and his knowledge of the edamame, I can't wait to visit Japan myself one day
Sekine-san was so happy to talk -- and that made it so hard to edit this to just 12 minutes!! hahaha
You could upload an extended version of it on your second channel?
Same.
that is absolutely adorable... the elderly are Always so heartwarming
Hey, all people older than you are not elderly. Human life span is 140 years or more. Be respectful.
I love it when you let your host speak without interrupting them, you are the best!
maria edelyn Gunda hi Maria lets go in Japan. Do you have messenger? Glad to met here in UA-cam.

I can't say how much I love the intro for these videos.
John my man, you've got me obsessed with Japan! ❤️❤️
edamame is always good snack for relax time.

@@snifey2233 I hate upvoting this, but, still, it's kinda funny, 'cuz the OP is falling in love with a Japan that doesn't really exist.
I was born and raised in Japan, I grew up eating Edamame every summer yet I didn’t know Edamame is Soybean no mae no dankai.

Hey John great video as always, In Egypt,we have broad beans they look just as Edamame and everyone eat it RAW 😁 you can find it sold on carts in the streets of Cairo ,its not sold in convenient stores or supermarkets though!
Love edamame. Works with Japanese food plus lots of other meals as an appetizer or with a main course.
I ate it fresh in a small pub when i visited Hokkaido few years ago and it definitely goes very well Sapporo biru.

I love edamame! I am in Texas and actually having some now! I like to put salt and garlic powder on the pods. So delicious
Congrats for the really informative video. I really liked it and it's so easy to watch.
Oh , and also I just realized I ate edamame the wrong way 😂
Chris Charistas thanks! Haha! There's no real correct way to eat it because I've been doing to hamster method -- and still do! More fun for me so follow your heart, just don't eat the pods!

Hahaha! My wife says I’m the only one who does the hamster style too.
The edamame reminds me of a similar vegetable we eat raw at the East of Spain. I love them. And I tried edamame twice and are delicious.
Edamame is "okish" to me, I don't think it taste of much tbh. Zunda on the other hand.... love it. (maybe it's my sweet tooth talking, lol) Great video John! ^^
Thomas
I have just had the bean yesterday when eating sushi 🍣 it so good
I love this channel. ❤️
I went to japan in February and I brought back edamame seeds! They're in my garden now!
+Evange awesome!! That's the way to do it :)
So satisfying to watch you. Hope to meet you one day😊
Thank you for such a very thorough report on soybeans in Japan! 🌞 As an American kitchen-gardener, this is giving me lots of great tips on how to grow soybeans for this year. Thank you!
