    Hello Anna, I really enjoyed this vid. I went to a summer wedding and wore a pastel blue sheath cocktail length , with matching sling back shoes a strand of pearls and earrings with a silver clutch. Everyone was dressed SO casually! I was asked if I was in the wedding party by most of the guests. I did feel a bit weird as most women were wearing sundresses, capri pants, and yes some jeans as well. I now ask what is the dress code ie formal, casual or what. I must say I did look smashing. My husband remarked that I looked fantastic compared to others. He was in black dress pants, light blue dress shirt open collared no tie. He did look quite handsome in a sea of jeans and t-shirts. I always enjoy your vids and love your style ❤

      Weddings are so expensive, that showing up in a t-shirt is a cringe from me. But I think that capri pants to a wedding is worse than jeans. (I love jeans, btw)

  • @Lighthouse1852
    @Lighthouse1852 Рік тому +13

    You hit on a good theme: if your goal is to give an impression of elegance, occasion-appropriate clothing is key. Under- and over-dressing are giveaways. Louboutin stilettos would not be seen as classy at a hunting cabin weekend. At the opposite end, as you pointed out, I wouldn't wear even my finest blue jeans to (most) weddings. Not because they're not chic enough, but because for many cultures and generations, blue denim would say to the wedding hosts that I don't respect their big occasion. Usually a dress/suit would be the respectful choice, even if it cost less than the jeans.
    Maybe instead of "rules," which sounds so prim, we could call them something like concepts or formulas. There aren't many places with dress codes anymore, which counter-intuitively makes it harder to choose suitable clothes. Formulas and rules-of-thumb help us non-stylists pull together outfits that will suit our figures and hit the style notes we're going for. Also formulas help us understand how our outfits are likely to be perceived by others, for when we care about that. Some people don't care at all. Others like those who need a particular job, or want to impress a date, or need their audience to believe in their professional competence, often do care. IMHO. I don't think rules are meant to restrict us.

    • @ANNAREID29
      @ANNAREID29  Рік тому +1

      I totally agree about being respectful of an occasion! I do think that things have changed a lot over the last few years, and lots of events seem to accept a lot more casual than before, but there are certain ones that I still feel like we need to dress up a little for ❤️

  • @melocoton7

    The “classiness” of jeans depends on the quality of the denim and the cut. A cheap super stretch hyper skinny jean will always look cheap and unflattering. But a 100% or at least 95% cotton denim in a cool modern fit will look good.

    Oh my goodness, I remember comparing the blacks! For the most part, if the shade of black is off but too close , its a no go, but like you said a good contrast in the black is ok, like a charcoal with a very black.
    I have been wearing jeans much less lately simply because they are not as comfy as a casual trouser for me. I own 2 pair now- a white skinny and a dark wash boot cut. That's it! I didn’t know there was a rule about it, but I always wear belts if the bottoms, dress, etc., I’m wearing has belt loops, unless the waistband is covered by something else. But, I don’t like tops long enough to completely cover my waistband, so that rarely occurs for me. I just prefer a more polished style, and empty belt loops just don’t look polished to me. I’m a big dan of good belts, but not too wide or showy because I’m short-waisted, and don’t have the best waist definition

    I dont know why anyone would think that only neutrals would be luxury😳🤪 i am really tired of this quiet luxury term, which looks like confuses so many. If your outfit is classic, elegant, good quality, fits you well( the most important), and you makeup and accessories are matched accordingly, you will look luxurious. And other way around, you can put the most expensive things, that doesnt fit you, doesnt match , and all people will see, expensive outfit. It doesnt matter what trend, as long as you wear clothes, and not the other way around, you will look and feel expensive 😜 i dont have problem of matching the same color shades, but i do prefer if i can get monochromatic look. Its not a law, but my preference if i can. As i am now searching for top, to match with my fendi skirt, the skirt color is so strange, beautiful but strange its kind of greyish taupe🤪 . The perfect match would be the top from the set, but its way too cropped , for my liking. So beige is too light and grey silver is too dark😳🤪😂. I agree with shoes, black it doesnt look too good with neutral outfit, but beige would work with all neutral and mixed with black. Have a blessed day🙏💗

      It's neither tight (as in bodycon) nor too baggy. My rule of thumb: if you can fit a slim flask/bottle of water between the widest point of your body and a piece of clothing, then it is the right/body skimming fit.

    • @ANNAREID29
      @ANNAREID29  Рік тому +3

      LOL I love this! ❤️ Yes agreed... when I think tight/fitted I think, formed to your body (usually in the form of some kind of stretchy fabric) where you can see basically everything going on. Body skimming, the fabric still has some ease around your body, you don't see every indention in your skin or curves. Hope that helps!

    I think black hardly ever looks good with anything! I do like black and white, or black with tan/cognac, but that’s about it. I think it’s just such a somber, unflattering color. I do wear some black pieces, it’s tough to ban it completely, but if the black is near my face, I try to add something white, light or bright there, too, to offset its deathly effect on my very pale coloring and dark undereye circles. I’m always searching for navy items instead, but they’re always few and far between, except for blazers. Clothes and accessories usually come only in black and one trendy bright color, neither of which I like (as a Summer coloring type, I need softer colors). On the other hand, white really does go with any color! That’s one of the reasons it’s my favorite wardrobe color, it’s incredibly versatile, and yes, year-round. Wearing all black isn’t chic, it’s a copout.

    Here is a true story Anna. My hubby and have had 5 funerals and a wedding in the last year. Some funerals were extended family some longtime friends. In each case i wore what i thought were appropriate somber outfits. (Trousers, blazers, navy dress etc) In each case i felt a bit overdressed compared to other family members. There were jeans (galore) and lots of casual clothes.
    The wedding was for my grandson. The bride, groom and wedding party dressed in traditional wedding clothes. As soon as the ceremony was over, break out the shorts, flip flops, jeans and tees. No fancy reception here. Just a good bbq. This is TX.

      I’m in Texas too. Same deal at nice restaurants. We dress nice, not overdresssed but then there’s a guy in shorts and a tee shirt. I mean, why?? You almost CAN’T get “ dressed up” any more. Even funerals. Unless the family ASKS that you come casual… don’t.

      I feel like there are different vibes to different weddings for sure! And... if the bride and groom are breaking out the flip flops etc I definitely think it's ok for everyone else. But if, let's say, you had absolutely no idea about a wedding dress code, I would 100% not wear jeans and wear something a little dressier. Also... I'm sorry you had so many funerals! ❤️❤️

      I had the same experience at a family funeral last year. I wore a black linen skirt and a teal linen top with ballet flats. Simple and understated but so overdressed as most people arrived as if they popped in while walking their dog or popping into the grocery store. They were seniors and I was quite shocked. I haven’t been to a funeral in a church in a while. When did it change?

    “When you’re trying to look expensive…” Stop saying that!! The word “expensive” is used to describe objects ONLY. Usually ones you purchase. When you say it about a person, it makes them at best sound like they can be bought, and at worst, like a prostitute. Maybe try, “when you’re trying to look expensively dressed” or “dressed like your clothes are expensive” or “when you’re trying to look luxuriously dressed”.

    Can you do a series on what and what not to wear if you are hosting an event? I went to a baby shower, the couple were both new anesthesiologist’s, so older and established. However, the sisters of the dad-to-be who were hosting the event were wearing: camouflage pants and a sports bra and the other wore terry shorts, rolled down and a t-shirt tied beneath her bosom showing her tummy. It was in Texas and outdoor, but, really? As a couples shower, many of the men were uncomfortable and everyone felt awkward. These two were gorgeous and two of the most charming young women, but just not appropriately attired for the event.

    I don’t think jeans are “not classy”, but I do think they’re not elegant. Except for clean, non-distressed, white jeans, which can look elegant if styled right, and most importantly, are appropriate for the occasion. But because jeans are so hot, stiff and uncomfortable, I’d rather wear other white trousers that are breathable and comfy and don’t have a big metal button digging into my waist. Dark, non-distressed indigo jeans are fine for casual wear, but an outfit including them is unlikely to be considered elegant. They can be styled in a more elegant way, like with a blazer, crisp shirt, leather, low-heeled shoes and a silk scarf or leather belt, for example. Washed-out, light blue jeans are always going to look ultra-casual. A more elegant style isn’t for everybody, perhaps, but it’s definitely my preference. It feels right for my age too, 63, if not now, then when? A classic, elegant style is timeless for a woman of any age. Dressing better is increasing in popularity now, in response to the extreme over-casualization of clothing during the pandemic, and during the previous 20 years. Fashion/personal style is my creative outfit, I get no comfort or creative pleasure from wearing black gym wear all the time, like most of my community does.
