    Kettle helmets definitely need more love in pop culture!

  • @someguy3861
    @someguy3861 Рік тому +1

    The Celtic Gauls also had kettle helms, weirdly enough. They were more conical, with a spike on top and a less pronounced brim but the shape was very similar (with the addition of cheek flaps under the brim)

      Cool! I should go search for that. (Discovers cool things and is happy)
      Though my request would be to get one with a little boar figure instead of a spike. I know, not practical, but it stands out for ceremonies. I believe the youth call it “being extra” but I’m not sure.

    How thick (millimeters) would a kettle hat worn by a medieval peasant soldier usually be?

    • @LaurenDangerShaw
      @LaurenDangerShaw  3 роки тому +3

      A simple kettle hat for a lower class soldier might be 1.5mm thick, but we have to remember it would be hand forged so in some places it might approach 2mm and could be thinner along the brim. Thicker than that for the majority of the helm and it becomes too heavy and really hurts your neck. Reproductions often use the old measurement of gauge, so 16 for the 1.6 mm but 14 for the 2mm. I hope that helps answer your question!

      @@LaurenDangerShaw If I remember correctly, you'll find the most examples in the beginning of the game where you partake in a siege and go through your camp. You find the early iron hat, the one which has the eyeslit, one that is a merger with the Norman style helmet, and a very late version that merges with the conquistador style helmet and has a spiral pattern of folds.

      @@LaurenDangerShaw I've seen a reproduction of that one, but sadly the maker went bankrupt. They also made some beautiful half and 3/4 plate armour with a black and white pattern (either with that helmet, or a burgonet).
      I think that it was Polish armour, which would make sense as both were probably based on the same original piece...

      Always sad when artistic adventures like armour smithing doesn’t survive tough times. A shame for sure.

    What are your thoughts on the mid/late 15th century kettle helm with eye-slits? It appears to be common during the Hussite Wars from what I can tell. I’m not sure how practical it would be, but I like how it seems to be a middle-ground between a kettle and a sallet.

    • @LaurenDangerShaw
      @LaurenDangerShaw  3 роки тому +1

      Well at times I think it looks a bit weird, but I get the idea behind it. Older kettle helms from an era of slashing attacks were great, but the 15th Century sees a lot of thrusting from swords as well as various pole weapons. I’d probably prefer a sallet and bevor instead if I really needed the protection. Personal style choice.

    • @potatokilr7789
      @potatokilr7789 3 роки тому

      @@LaurenDangerShaw Thanks for the quick reply. I also thought that the helmet wouldn't provide the best defense against thrusts (especially since a thrust might be deflected _into_ the eye-sits). Good luck with your channel!
