    I've always loved dragoons, because their response to flying enemies wasn't, "Let's develop powerful long-ranged weaponry," or "Let's practice effective long-range magic." No, it was, "Let's get so good at jumping we can stab them with a spear." What's not to love about that mindset?

    I love how the Dragoon's progression is lore base. From Blood of the Dragon/Geirskogul, to Life of the Dragon/Nastrond, to Star Diver, it's all leading the Dragoon to be more Dragon-like, or to be more specific, Nidhoog-like.

    • @thismarxtheendforjoo2298
      @thismarxtheendforjoo2298 2 роки тому +23

      Ninja’s and rogues are generally thought of as sneaky assassin’s striking at the right moment while being very agile and quick ,ergo leading to the cat like reflexes and graceful landings they are known for.
      In FFXIV I think dragoon’s would also have learned that falling skill just based on necessity .

    • @meeeberperson
      @meeeberperson 2 роки тому +47

      Dragoons just use their massive quads to ignore fall damge, they are just too angry to care about the pain

    • @Rhoen13
      @Rhoen13 2 роки тому +11

      Ive always thought of it as not because of their skills but because of their armor. The rogues by design use their abilities plus their lighter gear to stick the landing better. I think the Dragoon armor is still treated like mail or slightly lighter heavy armor? Like, they may be skilled at sticking the landing but theyre still bringing all that extra weight down with them as they do it?

    • @sixthcairn
      @sixthcairn Рік тому +2

      Maybe because the spear driving into the target absorbs most of the kinetic energy, which is perhaps why it deals so much damage.

    • @SniperKing-O
      @SniperKing-O Рік тому +1

      It makes more sense for your average Dragoon to take fall damage, but our Dragoon is Second Azure Dragoon! We should automatically get a pass for ourselves canonically being on the same skill level as a Dragoon as Estinien post Stormblood and beyond.

  • @TheGreatDanish
    @TheGreatDanish 2 роки тому +79

    One of my favorite parts about Dragoon's lore is that its a practical class.
    A practical response to a practical problem of war.
    Its a world of magic where a nation needs a reliable, low tech solution to kill flying enemies: Just fucking jump at em. It probably means that you'd find a weaker version of Dragoons active in the Azim steppe because they *also* need low tech solutions to fighting flying enemies, mounted Roc Riders. They lacked the power of two dragons to get the discipline started, but I would bet money a culture that decides to kill each other as a means of deciding political leadership is a crucible for fighting styles. I won't pretend that 'dragoon-lites' would be even half as strong as people juiced up by dragon magic, though.

      The alternative if you’re fighting fliers that aren’t multi-ton scaled monsters is a spear with a rope on it. You either pull them from the sky or get a crash course on the finer points of high jump and improvised landings.

    There were a few tidbits that I think you missed
    First off, during the dragonsong war at least, it's stated by one of the Dragoons that they're not actually that great with Lancework... Suffering a crippling overspecialization as their training helps them to fight airborne or otherwise large enemies. Grounded enemies or enemies the size of Humans are a bit harder to hit with Jumps, thereby making Dragoons a bit less effective against them. The primary character of the 50-60 quests wants to train *under* us because we've effectively blended Gridanian Lancework with Ishgardian Dragoon styles. It does show in some segments of the game as well, as certain Dragoons even at full power don't quite fight with the poise and grace of a Lancer
    Furthermore, you neglected to mention in any way the existence of the Dragon Soul inside of each Dragoon, and how they dominate it to achieve their jumps to begin with. It's also a source of their greatest drawbacks, as the Dragon Soul does not like being forced to use its power against Dragons, and is always in conflict with the Dragoon to try and take control and turn them into a Dragon themselves. Dragoons themselves are trained not only from Knights, but also primarily from children whose villages were razed by Dragons, using their sheer rage to temper their power and make them that much more effective. However, when the Dragon Soul is able to cooperate with the Dragoon - which we start to see towards level 60 - it confers far greater power. In regular Dragoons, this is usually unobtainable as their Dragon Soul isn't that strong, but through consuming Dragon's Blood it grows stronger and more akin to one of the First Brood... Conferring power closer to the level of the Azure Dragoon
    With that in mind, one must also consider the brief effect "Life of the Dragon", which I can only speculate involves the Dragon Soul briefly *taking over* the body to enable the use of far more potent forms of Geirskogul and the Jump. It's through the cooperation of the two souls that enable them to effectively fight in a battle-trance, though never for longer than 30 seconds.
    Finally, I believe it's worth mentioning the existence of the "Blood Dragoons" following the Dragonsong War. Titles bestowed upon Dragoons who forge bonds with Dragons, and are granted specially crafted armor from the Dragon in question. These Dragoons are, functionally speaking, stronger than the Azure Dragoons due to the strength of their Dragon soul and the mutual cooperation they have achieved by no longer slaying Dragons out of hatred
    Just some thoughts I had while watching. Very enjoyable watch though

    Y'know, the bit about dragon blood and dragon fire used in metalworking makes me wonder: if some dragons decided to donate decidedly nonlethal amounts of blood - like a blood drive but with dragons - and the smiths of Ishgard had access to both dragon fire to smelt their metal and dragon blood to quench it, how much stronger would that make the arms and armor? Presumably a lot, right?

      Dragoons irl are calvary type warriors too, known for horseback combat. So I always imagined in FF14, their riding/piloting stats would naturally be high - like they can drive most anything pretty competently.

    • @patrickbuckley7259
      @patrickbuckley7259 2 роки тому +1

      @@Sarucapture4fight Your not wrong... to drive it home, Dragoons where actually mounted infantry. (They would ride to their location on horseback and then dismount to fight.) Which Dragoons often do in Final Fantasy, when they are Dragon Riders, use the mount for transportation in between fight's then dismounting to fight, and freeing up the dragon to fight more aggressively. Then using their insane jumping capabilities to remount without forcing the dragon to land, so they can move to another location on the battlefield.
      So pretty accurate aside from the fact that real life Dragoons used Muskets... but hey a rifle with a bayonet is basically a spear right?

    Yes as much as our will is for the sky we also all need to remember to all my fellow dragoons that we must keep whatever is hiding down in the bottom pits of Titans arena in check.
    For if that thing ever arises it will destroy all of Eorzea.
    ( do not take this as a serious thing I am just making fun of that us dragoons we always fall in the pit at Titan at least once in our whole career. It's kind of like a ceremonial thing at this point because this is where you would get the backflip and if you use a backflip there in the fight you'll fall in the pit.
    So like I said do not take what I said serious but to one Dragoon to another keep your spear sharpen and keep your head high to the sky for our adventure will never be over.)

    I am having so many emotions about this. Like, I have loved dragoon from the first moment of playing it, and always looked at it from a gameplay perspective as opposed to how they operate within the world. I am blown away with the history because I've either forgotten these facts or completely missed them (or they weren't there in what I've played). This is so awesome, thank you ^♡^

    This was AWESOME!! Thank you for making this! I've been a Lancer/Dragoon main since I started playing(late Shadowbringers), and it's become one of my top favorite classes. The lore, emotion, and weight behind the class is far outshadowed by memes and jokes around the class, and I've had a hard time trying to convince friends to play or stick with the class.
    Little side thing, in my opinion, it's a damn shame they got rid of Blood of the Dragon. It was one of the coolest parts of the class, in my opinion, especially since it blended so well into Red Eye Mode. I just wish they would have made it similar to, say, a Dancer's gauge, where you wouldn't loose your charges even if the timer ran out, instead of just removing the ability alltogether. I miss getting to roar like a dragon into combat. 😭

    I wonder what would happen if a Dragon focused its evolution to emulate the techniques and fighting style of a Dragoon.
    We've already seen evidence of Dragons having the capability of evolving to something in order to better effectively copy mortal ingenuity in the form of a crafting Dragon in the Firmament. So it would be amazing to see a Dragon attempt to emulate a Dragoon someday. :D

    • @SniperKing-O
      @SniperKing-O 2 місяці тому +1

      @LowIntSpecimen Yup, though he's just using Estinien's body.
      I'd like to see what a Dravinian would and fight like using their own evolved body suited to the fighting style of a Dragoon.
      I doubt they would look like what Estinien looked like possessed by Nidhogg. They'd more than likely retain most of their draconic appearance while having a more humanoid shaped body like the Syricta: those blue/green humanoid dragons that wander around the Dravinian Hinterlands.
      Or something less humanoid, but just more dexteritious with their limbs and such, like Ehll Tou from one of the Ishgardian Custom Delivery weekly quests.

    man call me what ever but I have been a long time healer main in most games until recently where I now just want to dps and see big numbers. Its honestly shocking how much more I am enjoying dragoon compared to any other class in ffxiv. Then after watching the lore on dragoon it has made me feel some how even more connected to the job. I love that Dragoons are so brave, courages and strong. While fear might be present they show no fear. Its something that really resonates with me lately and its something that has helped me in my own personal growth. So its pretty neat how my current path in life where I am pushing myself more and more is somewhat similar to my main dragoon who never shows fear and is brave all the way through.

    I love how the old floor tank reputation due to animation locks is directly acknowledged in the lore, or, rather, as part of the class design. The jumps really are an inherently risky proposition. I always thought of it more as an annoyance other classes don’t have to deal with (except Black Mages and Ninjas, to some degree) but really it’s a storied part of our history! It’s not a bug, it’s a feature! 😂

    So uh....Lol DRG???
    No. All jokes asides. I main everything but my frist love and still main love is Dragoon. I started FFXIV during the early acess of 2.0 as DRG. I was so elated when Heavensward came out because the "Lol DRG" bs went silent! And throughout expansions, DRG has remained a very coveted lifestyle. So glad I made the right choice in the very beginning. Even with falling in love with all the other DPS, Tank, and Healing jobs, I always go back to DRG. Even my alt chars are also DRGs. And when Endwalker comes out, though I will be leveling Reaper and Sage, I might have to go through the MSQ as DRG. I began this story ark with it and so what better way to end the finale with DRG.
    Through the fire (Lol DRG absue), my spear and resolve was forged! To all my fellow DRGs - you are the heart of FFXIV. We are mighty and as fierce as dragons.

    if there is a staple job that reflects Final Fantasy, one could argue that it is the Dragoon for its uniqueness. No idea who in their right mind thought "Let's make a job which main feature is jumping" and not call them a Vaultist. But still, Dragoons remain the masters of vertical agility and while it's never really shown 'how' their jump ability and training works (except the Shadowbringer trailer perhaps) and memes aside, there's a certain awesome factor to seeing them in action at all levels.
    - Spoiler ahead -
    And it's interesting to see how, during the course of FFXIV MSQ, you see how the main representative of the Dragoons, Estinien, comes to evolve the role of Dragoon from Dragon Killer to Dragon Rider and how the WoL's take on the Dragoon arts also evolved in their own way as a more generalist combat art. You could say that the 'modern' Dragoon has a much more different role to play in conflicts now than it did before and what was once an art made out of the necessity of hunting dragons to protect Ishgard, they've now become, in a way, the bridge between man and dragon.
    And I think one of their most distinct feature, their spiky armor, has a lot more to do with their arts as a mean to control their direction while in the air. That, and having a heavily spiked armor means if a dragon tried to eat you, the spikes would damage their mouth, throat and stomach on the way down, possibly to the point of fatal internal hemorrhage.
    ... Still don't know why they take fall damage from heights, though... especially since the Ninja even has a passive trait that reduces fall damage; considering that, Dragoons should have immunity to fall damage altogether, especially since it's not a "powered" one.
