Glad they didn't put a silver ring around the camera lens like some other phones. Any cam bezel that isn't black is horrible for watch photos because it reflects off the crystal.

That's true, but you'd be surprised at how many phones out there have bezels around the lens that cause reflections during close-up photos... specifically watch photos, which is what we do.
I really don't think they are too concerned that people taking pictures of watches are going to get a glare lol

I would like to see RED focus (pun intended) on making a camera in the lower price range instead of focusing on making it compact. My thoughts are that making electronics and optics small and compact is expensive, and I would rather pay a few hundred dollars less for something less compact, or the same price (as the phone) on a camera that gives higher quality video.
It has create widers cameras and it cost 40 000 $ and you can guess than the better camera is the camera you can take anywhere in your pocket and if more guys buy phones than cameras the phone would be less expensive

Then buy a cheaper camera, there's too many other options in the prosumer arena for RED to dip to mid-level quality. RED quality is meant to be a step above, because you get what you pay for. This phone is as cheap as it will get, because they are revolutionizing the phone from factor.
They are actually building prosumer cameras now to shoot the new 4V system.

It better shoot 16K 240FPS RAW video on the built in camera with a 3" sensor and a lens that can emulate cinema lenses from 10mm to 300mm at f/0.9-f/22 in a body that's no more than 7mm thick with no camera bump. I'd expect no less of RED.

Unless you watched it on a holographic display, it wouldn't look any different to a normal phone screen though...

RED cameras are professional cinema cameras. The camera, battery, screens, etc are expensive because they are handmade, went to rigorous QC and are made to last. When you're shooting a big blockbuster, the last thing you want to worry about is the battery failing. So yes, these prices are justified. Besides, cheaper third party gear is available.
As far as this phone goes, it's a camera that will support interchangeable lenses and 3d rendering. It just so happens to also make calls. As far as DSLR's and studio cameras go, $1200 is peanuts.

99% of the people commenting don't get the idea behind this amazing phone. It's NOT a consumer oriented phone. It's looks are at the bottom of the priority list. It's all about functionality, the closest thing to having a cinema film capable device that fits in your pocket. It's for having RED cinema in your pocket. Count me in!

Same reason I basically watch latop videos that range from like a few hundred to quite a few thousand dollars. I personally got a $1300 Sager myself recently and love it but you will hardly find reviews of them but I keep track of a good chunk of laptops so I can better advise others who might be looking and are way less tech savory then myself. I personally use a 720p webcam when streaming to twitch along with a Samson Meteor Mic since I needed something small that would tuck away under my monitor easily. But I did NOT skimp on the headphones with my Audio Technica ATH-m50x and my FiiO E18 dac/amp combo for audio output.

@NovaS1101, yes he did. For one thing, I've listened to it a few times to be sure and... I'm sure. For another thing, it just makes sense, given that he says afterwards "the top and bottom parts are Kevlar panels". I'm not sure whether you're familiar with the concept but the part between the top and the bottom is commonly referred to as the middle. If he had said "the Kevlar parts are Kevlar" then I might consider it likely that he also said "the metal part is metal". He doesn't enunciate his words too well there so "middle" and "metal" do sound similar but if you listen carefully you can tell the difference and the context just makes your interpretation so unlikely as to be laughable.

Michael Nguyen it's a Red, not some shitty startup. This is for all the aspiring filmmakers who want quality but can't budget a proper film camera, as well as introducing them to the Red lineup in the smoothest way possible. Everyone wants a Red but they can be upwards of $40k, so this is a welcomed compromise.
For the most part, it looks like it's not a phone, but foremost a configurable specialist tool for a few grand, that also happens to be a phone, because it allows you to always keep it on you and doesn't really add to the price. Besides, if they end up reaching their engineering goals on this and release it, i'm sure they'll keep making it without changes for 3 years and then upgrade the models every few years - don't expect the same product lifecycle from RED Camera Company as you do from consumer companies.

Just my two cents, I'd advise those aspiring filmmakers to look into a used DSLR or mirrorless camera, some lenses, and some work lights and start working on their trade instead of investing $1200 on a glorified smartphone just because it has a logo slapped on the side of it. The idea that a cellphone camera (can't stress that enough) is somehow going to immediately increase the quality of their work is ludicrous.

3Ds is 'lenticular' display tech. Here's what Jim Jannard had to say about the display in the Hydrogen:
"Our display is technology you haven’t seen before. It is not lenticular, which is inferior tech in every way, has been tried many times before and failed for good reason. (see Amazon 3D Fire, LG Optimus, etc). Lenticular display dramatically lowers resolution, cannot be turned off for standard 2D content, only works in one direction (usually landscape), has color crosstalk… to name just a few issues. My bet is that other “big” companies will try to re-package lenticular 3D displays with eye-tracking in response to our program. Don’t fall for it."
You're right I ended up NEVER using the 3D on my 3DS. It was gimmicky and didn't work well in most games. He'll it didn't work well in general

Gonna turn out like the 3DS. Spend extra to have some 3D features that you leave off.
Obviously there are lots of things about this phone that are great, but it is very expensive and leaving a holographic display out of it could have dropped the price.
I don't think it's really aimed at people who are price conscious.

DrDalek But this isn't the same situation. There aren't going to be "exclusive games" you can only access on this phone. There are great features like the upgrade-able camera and ergonomic design, but other than that it is just going to be another competing phone. If you test this phone at a demo and decide you don't like the holographic display, then the ONLY thing that would make you buy it is the camera. And even then, why not invest into a real camera and get a cheaper phone instead? It doesn't make sense to have such an expensive phone when the only innovation is a holographic display that doesn't have any utilization.

Felt more like a sponsored ad than a review, but I enjoyed the video nonetheless. I do however think its skeuomorphic, target group-centered design is extremely ugly and limiting, but above all, it's a novelty product by an enthusiast consumer product company; this will never work, especially at that price.

Actually no, that wasn't sarcasm at all. He creates absolutely high-quality videos, there isn't one every day so they are something valuable when they come out, and sometimes there are videos like this one where Marques gets to be the first to toy around with stuff no one has ever toyed around with. And he doesnt get over excited or does a HUUUGE SHOW BECAUSE YEEEEAAAAAH AWWWWSUM and so on. He is just chilled, does his thing, and does it very professionally. And I enjoy that.

Is the holographic display a 3DS esque 3D display?
Audie Liem I'm thinking something along those lines, same as the previous few 3d smartphone that have been made. Hopefully they figured out a way to do it with a progressive refresh panel instead of interlaced like all the above.

It would appear that this would be an auto-stereoscopic display of some sort like that of the 3DS.
But the 'why' is more interesting. 3D media has never really taken off as it was originally thought. So why would Red be going out of there way to make such a display? Especially considering how little native 3D is shot in any production.
I have theories:
1: Red have made a compelling auto-stereoscopic screen tech that they have patented and are using this device to help subsidize the R&D cost for future development and implementation.
2: Red has light-field camera tech that they will be releasing soon and thus making native 3D shoots as easy as shooting 2D. So auto-stereoscopic screens would allow anyone to see true 3D at anytime be it shot with Hydrogen or a Red Light-field camera.
I had a 3rd theory, but I forgot what it was. LOL
But it wasn't nearly as compelling as these two.
Lightfield Cameras are stupidly expensive, but RED Cameras are too so your theory is compelling, maybe the Moto Z esque module is the lightfield sensor? then again i think lightfield photos can be displayed fine on a 2D display
either way I'm excited to see something different than just small improvements in smartphones!

Wow did that Evo 3D have an awful speaker. The 3D was good though and 3D pictures could come out amazing, depending on the angle and scene/object.
I'd say this is like the 3DS+the Fire phone+focus on camera usage (except, with 2017 technology and with RED branding...)

Just because a company brings you over to show you a product does not = sponsorship. If a journalist is invited to the unveiling of a new car, are they sponsored? Obviously not. Just because he doesn't share your view doesn't mean sponsorship either.
MB, as others have mentioned, has a soft/blind spot for RED. We all have a brand that we have a soft spot for, so he's simply giving RED the benefit of the doubt. Let's see when he gets a proper hands on look at the final product.

Hey man. I think this makes a lot of sense if your a film director or cinematographer. You don't need to buy a camera AND a phone. You can get both here. I am very intrigued and might pre order. I figure I can always sell it as red holds its value very well.

mo101epic they are very different you may find that red is going to be targeting a whole other market. The s8 and note 8 are focusing screen size and type while red is focusing on developing the future for phones. I will say the back side of the red phone looked pretty ugly it looked like those wierd cases you buy. But everyone t hinks different so great if it appeals to you

obviously if you're not an artist you aren't gonna have any use for this considering it's geared towards photographers and film makers. if you were you'd know that buying a simple DSLR is more expensive than this phone

So pretty much everyone in the comments that I've seen so far hating on this phone do not fall within the target demographic for this phone. Oh it looks ugly, oh it's 0.00786/80000 of a mm too thick for my 'needs', oh the grips (which are intended for functionality) are weird looking, go buy your fashion accessory of a phone if you want those things. This is meant for functionality, and functionality only. For a big tech reviewer, this phone could potentially make them money in its functionality, so value is highly subjective. RED is not an ecosystem for the average person, it was never intended to be. RED is not budget friendly, it was never intended to be. You can't treat this like an IPhone or Galaxy device as it is something entirely different.
