Yes. Fantastic to watch his mastery of it, he knows it so well and can play so well, but I feel a little something was lost in the emotion of it. This piece is like ice-cream to be savoured, not gulped down. ;) oh well, he’s still brilliant and my favourite cellist of all time.
Oh my gosh, I have been watching his version from 9 years ago (or at least uploaded 9 years ago) over and over. What a treat to see it being done again and with a good camera. I think Mischa Maisky is the best Cello player ever, so much so that he has inspired me to start learning it on the Bass Guitar (tuned in fourths not fifths so it’s a challenge). Right, now I am off to listen!

Thank you for playing one of my favorite Bach pieces. I can never understand how someone can remember all of that complex music without reading from a sheet.
Anyone can, they just need experience, I have memorised them just from practising them non-stop to perfect them, you can get them by heart if you practise enough too.
Thank you so much. What a gift for you to us. For me, and sure many others, your old recordings of the cello suites are legend! It is Our reference how the pieces from Bach should supposed to sound. I am a working mother from 3 children and a few years ago I bought a cello and I started to play from scratch!! I did not grew up with music, and I’m not familiar with classical music at all. So to be able to can play the cello, I took a loaning by the bank to pay one, and I quit smoking for it. Despite my hard working life and my children I make it as a priority to practice. It is food for my soul. Now I have a UA-cam channel and I attacked for the first time to play the Menuet I. And then you can see how difficult playing the cello is. How I struggle. I cannot even play in tune! Mischa Maisky is really a Master. I like him the most. His (almost) excessive vibratos and his strong attack on the strings. And I find him still the most handsome! And still so beautiful playing these suites. I wish one day I could see him playing in real life. Who knows... Never give up your dreams like I did starting this cello adventure. (And... I still do not smoke).
Love it overall. Maisky's technique is amazing; great dynamics and vibrato. While the rapidity of his "Courante" is impressive, it feels rushed to me to the point that one can't savor Bach's genius in harmonic progression. So thoughtful to share this gift with us during the pandemic!
I’ve always preferred courante at a slower tempo even tho it is intended to be moderately fast or fast idk it just lets me really listen as the piece is not that long
Mischa Maisky Bach Celo prelude first record is my favorite music of all time. I listen it so much during all my life and willl listen it lot more again. He is a master in his art. Merci Monsieur Maisky pour toutes ces fabuleuses raisonances que votre musique ont crées dans ma vie. But if I have to confess, this Confinment version is too speed to me, it like Yo-yo-ma version, it doesn't let us breath and it's a pitty. As a Master, find the truth when reaching the speedest way to play a music you have to go back at the emotional speed when the music speak to people's heart and mind. And it's why ,I think , your first shot was so perfect even if it's not as speed as the masters of the art. Youre the real master of this song to my heart and for ever. Thank you a billion time M. Maisky
I fully agree with you, for me prelude isbthe best. And this version is too fast. I have been listening old version of Mischa Maisky that was recorded in 1990. Have you listened?
What a gift. Had to interrupt my practicing to absorb such brilliance. Please Mischa add #2 to your so soulful version live from Japan. Thank you from the heart, mind and soul
Captivating, almost makes me wish I played the cello instead of the violin, it has a deeper voice which can really carry emotion, of course the violin can do the same, it's just so different too
Maestro!!! What a gift.....absolutely sublime!. Thank you for sharing Bach with us from the intimacy of your lovely home. It is a privilege to be able to join you.
muchas gracias Maisky, musicalidad excelente. JSBach nos otorgó muchas opciones en la matemática musical. no tan solo son números, es emoción. y Maisky lo sabe. gracias.
I really want to write him a letter 😭 such a cutie and a beautiful musician! Not a real fan of this sort of music but some of them just hit me in the heart and make me feel like closing my eyes and waltzing round the room feeling every note. He needs to know that this 20yr woman from Newport in South Wales appreciates his work so much ❤️ please give my your email 😂😭😪❤️
He seems to be playing this version faster and a bit looser. I don't mean it in a bad way, just that he's playing freely for his enjoyment and not for an audience.
Looking forward to seeing a current edition of the Bach cello suites to go with the one up on UA-cam he did a while ago. (ua-cam.com/play/PLA70D07FB6C624D3A.html)
IMHO, the interpretation is a bit cockeyed- caused by the 'pandemic' maybe? (That was supposed to be a joke, as well as a question about a questionable interpretation)
01:06 Prelude
03:17 Allemande
07:21 Courante
10:00 Sarabande
13:00 Menuet I/II
16:24 Gigue
I know it's quite off topic but does anybody know of a good site to stream newly released movies online?
@Muhammad Emmitt lately I have been using flixzone. Just search on google for it :)

I just love it in the slower tempo as he played in that time i feel there was more peace in it. But there is no doubt that he the best cellist still!
I noticed
It's more open and free.
play it in .85 speed :)

Misha, There is something in your Bach that remains, even after all these years. Unique and distinct. BRAVO!

I think exactly the same 💯

Misha..I only discovered your music a month ago...but it is timeless Bach. Just love it and the peace I feel when I listen to you..xx
Best therapy you could get for this pandemic isolation👌👏
I hear Yo Yo Ma... but I *FEEL* Maisky... The raw emotion. I believe this is exactly how Bach intended his music to sound.
Very well said. I was just thinking about the same thing.
Amazing job Mr. Maisky. I can not wait to hear you play suite no. 2 and suite no. 5

Well, after playing it for a few months it is no big deal. Maestro Maisky has played it for 40 years, so there's the answer hehe.
I have never understood how a musician can play something they have not learned by heart... its like an actor reading his lines from paper on stage.
10年くらいまえ、札幌のコンサートホールで聴いて感激。車の中でいつも聴いています、と言うと、運転に気を付けてと言ってくれました。 はるか
What a wonderful player and person Mr. Maisky is! Bravo!

After years I am finally learning that to make these sound good and bring out the emotion, you have to keep moving your bow! ❤

Always finish on the Bach
Prelude: Why so fast? A serious question.
Is way better fast, the regular interpretation is boring
ok honestly who else can play it like Maisky? only 2 bow passes per bar. crazy.

Cool. Can he play Aria on G? The cello has the violin's range.
