Lake District Walks | A Helvellyn Round 5 Wainwrights: Raise, Catstycam, Nethermost Pike, White Side

  • In early June 2023, Neil returns to Glenridding, and heads up a Lakeland classic - Helvellyn, England's third highest hill, not via Striding Edge! He also visits nearby Wainwrights Raise, White Side, Nethermost Pike and finishes with a trip to Catstycam, via the dramatic Swirral Edge.
    On the way, there are birds, tales of pony trekking Victorians and intrepid aeronautical pioneers!
    This is a roughly 12 mile walk, with around 3,890 ft of ascent and descent, which should take around 7 or 8 hours (we take longer, given a lot of faffing about with filming!). Full route here: explore.osmaps...
    On the way back down, it's worth paying a visit to YHA Helvellyn (www.yha.org.uk...) for drinks and snacks.
    Subscribe for more films of our walks and visit our website: www.onyvafilms.com to read more and to suggest other walks that you would like to see.
    More films coming soon!

    This was an amazing watch! And I'm taking it as a good sign as i had just turned on Utube after planning this exact route for when i come up in a few weeks and your video was at the top of my feed!
    Now just got to see if i can do it. I'm not the fittest person but i hope to just take my time and enjoy it.
    Again, great video!

      Thanks, Paul! One of the great things with Helvellyn is the number of options for ascent and descents, so you should probably be fine. The route up is a decent pitch, well-signposted and clear, so as long as you pace yourself, you should be fine. Hope you get a good day for it - let us know how you get on! Stay safe!

    Smashing video, thank you. Done Helvellyn a few times but always the "touristy way" via hole in the wall and striding edge. This looks a far more scenic and peaceful way - got to give it a go this year sometime. 👍

    Fantastic video! I love walking but can’t go anywhere near edges as they give me the heebyjeeby’s. It’s great that you show other ways to do Helvellyn.

    Watched this video again today as it brought back happy memories of when i did most of this route over fifty years ago.I did an Outward Bound course at Ulswater,.We climbed Helvelyn from most directions but this route still sticks in my mind.Thanks for taking me back there.Brilliant.

    “I can’t understand why you don’t get more views. I’ve watched all of your walks and I think the way you present them is unique and makes it look easy. I’ve done over 100 Wainwrights in both winter and summer, so I know they’re not easy. That was a good one and it’s now on my to-do list. 👍” take it easy.

      Hey Neil! Can confirm, we did this yesterday (minus Raise and Nethermost and sadly minus the cafe) and what a day in the fells it was! A bit brutal going up those switchbacks near Kepple cove though, our non-hill legs were struggling but we got it done and it was lovely! Can confirm that midget gate on the bridge is a wonderful bit of kit, we loved that (and the waterfalls all along the route, beautiful!) :)

    A real treat waking up to a new video by you. Last weekend we did the Steel Fell to Helm Crag walk you posted for our wedding anniversary. We watched it half a dozen times before we went and the guidance was spot on. How much of a physical step up would this hike be Neil? Thanks, for your great videos.

    • @LakeDistrictFilms
      @LakeDistrictFilms  Рік тому +1

      Thank you - so glad to hear they've been useful - hope you had a great day for it.
      This walk is a step up primarily in terms of time - it has quite a long walk in/walk out between Glenridding and around the Youth Hostel, but it's only long, rather than taxing.
      Overall, this walk is about 5 miles, and possibly about 3 hours, longer, and the descent of Swirral Edge is definitely a little more taxing (hands definitely needed), but taken slowly it's fine and never feels as exposed as Striding Edge. Technically, it's classed as a Grade 1 scramble - doable for hill walkers in good conditions.
      Hope that helps! All the best

    I've always had a soft spot for Helvellyn and have ascended by the majority of routes, but not via Keppel Cove (yet). Keep the videos coming. Incedently, how many wainwright's have you bagged?

    • @LakeDistrictFilms
      @LakeDistrictFilms  Рік тому +2

      Thanks, Steve. I'd not done this route previously (although, like you I suspect, have done it from various directions - Striding Edge, up from St John's in the Vale and as part of the ridge up from the Dodds), but this is a lovely approach.
      I first completed the Wainwrights in 2017, before starting filming them, but will need to do an updated tally of how many have been filmed, now! I'll let you know...

    • @LakeDistrictFilms
      @LakeDistrictFilms  Рік тому +3

      Other than Swirral Edge (which would probably be icy and a little intense in the snow) the rest of the route is probably good in the snow - just avoid the cornices at the edge of Helvellyn, and keep warm!
