I noticed the wiki had info on multiplayer items talking about invasion cooldown, do you know any specifics like how long that is and if resummoning resets that cooldown?
Skyrim seems mediocre compared to elden ring tho. The immersion is terrific but the quests can be boring. And combat is bad. Skyrim does have beautiful music
@@Artaxerxes. I somewhat agree, but Elden Ring has an 11 year advantage on Skyrim in terms of advances in tech and game design. At the time, for me at least, Skyrim was one of the best games I had played.
@@Artaxerxes. this is true and that's why he said Skyrim "of the 2020's". What you now see as boring aspects of Skyrim were a product of the times, it was quite immersive when it was released. It's like you missed his point entirely.
I'm 100% okay with graphics that aren't cutting edge if it cuts down on development time and allows for more time spent on more important things. The game looks beautiful regardless.
@@crazychainsaw007 performance issues on the game are not based on graphics but more on your hard drive/ ssd. Day 1 patch is very likely to fix the more common issues like stuttering.
@@androjdemakaveli2010 you can play early by changing stuff. I know PC release is at 3pm PT 6pm ET and then it releases midnight for all consoles. But on Xbox you can go into settings change ur time zone and get to play it 18hr early actually. So I’ll be able to play tmrw at 6am
After so many meh games and feeling like I need to play or I'll miss something in other games, it's nice to have game that I can't stop thinking about purely from the world and how much I want to keep playing it. I love this game, and feel like we haven't seen games like this in a long time.
For sure. I've been watching these videos at work for about a week, because I'm having withdrawals from the game. I'm 32 years old. Haven't felt this love since skyrim
Something you might want to correct- basic melee Combat is not just spamming R1 anymore at all, charged R2s and jump attacks deal huge stagger/poise damage, as does guard countering. Paired with Arts of War being more usable than weapon arts, the combat is far more evolved than it used to be in terms of viable options.
You forgot that both Powerstancing (DkS2) and running R2s (BB) are back! This game has by far the most depth to combat in any from zoft game. It literally takes all the mechanics from all previous games and blends em beautifully, as well as the new guard counter
I don't think that needs correcting at all. The way he put it is actually pretty accurate. You can still get through the game just fine using only R1 and roll, but you have more options for switching it up than any other souls game.
My fav is the charge attack feint into light: start charge attack, dodge and then light attack pretty sweet think you can only do it while locked on to something
@@buckyhurdle4776 @Bucky Hurdle Yeah sure, if you want to severely hinder your character, so that's a pretty poor comparison. Using R1 isn't going to hinder you, it's probably still the safest way to play. Mixing in charge and jump attacks is more fun and gives a more risk reward play style, leaving yourself more open to getting attacked, while possibly speeding up a boss fight with some crits. So as I said, the way he puts it in the video is quite accurate.
I don't play newer games on pc so I don't normally run into those issues. I also think this looks better art wise compared to horizon zero where alot of the characters are ugly is not the word but I don't like looking at them. Oh and I think this game is alot more beautiful/some areas kinda creepy so still dark then God of war not saying it didn't have its surprisingly beautiful moments.
You might be right about “game of the decade” - this game is a culmination of not just Dark Souls but many open world games. Replayability is also great - having finished one play through - I am more than ready for a second one.
Interesting. I finished my first playthrough, and after realizing new game plus was a joke, I thought the game had zero replay ability. Once the magic of discovering everything was over it felt like just another action game to me.
Actually I can´t imagine me playing any other game anymore. I will probably just respec or restart another character after my first slow playthrough. It´s so much fun just to discover everything. 11/10
😄 I know what you mean...I can't stop playing this game, hell even when I get smashed out and dumped on by a boss over and over and get pissed and quit then go play something else to cool off, it's not 10 mins later im already thinking about getting back on Elden Ring lol. I doubt it will because greedy fucks are greedy fucks, but one can hope that this game and its success might open someone's eyes out there that hey you can make a great, fun and rewarding game that actually comes with all the content day 1 and still have success!
For anybody watching this and wanting to buy it for PC, the frame rate drops are not anything like they were on release and I find it to be a very good experience now. I have a Ryzen 3600 and a 3060ti.
Fextralife Ive spent soooooo long looking for the info that you relay from 2:00-2:30. THANK YOU. No one else talks about it because I guess most people expect players to only care about the Dark Souls-esque stuff. And here, it’s like the first thing you say. This is very appreciated!
this reviews shows me that Elden Ring will deliver just what I want.... Looking cool in a cloak while riding a horse and wielding a sword. truly my ideal fantasy experience. Fashion is a priority, may we never forget that.
@@glow4417 a slight performance issue that will be fixed with a day one patch.. either way, you can't claim a game could very well be game of the decade then not give it a perfect score. that's just silly.
@GeT RekT Idk but Fextralife gave Nioh 1 & 2, Persona 5, Dark souls 3 and Divinity original sin a 10. Just really odd to see a 9.5 with how he describes it in the video and what everybody else is saying about it.
Was hesitant to buy the game due to how limited my spare time is right now but I just couldn't pass on a FromSoftware game. Ended up buying it yesterday, planned to play for an hour or two, played for 5 hours straight until I had to go to bed. This game is beyond amazing.
Just so you are aware, Tree sentinel always lags at the bottom of that hill, it's likely a bug and not a performance issue. You fight him at the top of the hill, no drops.
it is definitely performance issue. Those lags happen with every single boss fight, the few first fights with them, until all the shaders are cached. The game needs serious optimization
IMO, doubtful. I'm quite sure it has a lot to do with the lighting effects. He is quite shinny and puts off some of his own effect lighting. So the lighting calculations have to work hard during that fight. Turning lighting down to medium got rid of all my frame rate drops. I was even able to turn a few other things up to ultra (or do they call it maximum?) and keep a stable 60fps after doing that.
This is my first FromSoftware game that I will truly explore on my own.The past Dark Souls games,I would use player's walkthroughs to map the best way to traverse the landscape. This game I'm going in blind and really looking forward to it.
Man, I'm so excited for you 😃😃 Getting into a Souls game at ground zero before the community has everything figured out is such an awesome and unique gaming experience
Good luck, seriously. This game doesnt show you anything. Unless you've played dark souls you'll need a guide for literally everything. This is my second souls game (sekiro is my first) and I hate it so far. I'm so clueless as to what I should be doing and its annoying to have to look up everything I want to know online since the game refuses to teach you anything
I made myself a promise not to watch reviews, but I wanna support you. So I play this with the sound off and eyes closed so you get your watchtime. I already know how much work u put i to this, as you always do. Thank you for that. But I don‘t want anything to cloud my judgement or opinion before I can get my hands on it :3 I might listen to the verdict though. ;)
I was too but it feels weird to play at least. It does not feel like a souls experience at all, its more like a shadow of war kinda game, not bad but a bit dissappointing for myself :/
I love the game, can’t stop playing. It has atmosphere that put me to edge the whole time, pretty stressful but I don’t want to stop either. The Stormvale Castle is so much fun, but also tedious if you died because the enemies that you cleared before (except bosses) will respawn eek means I have to clear it again. There are so many secrets in and around the castle if you wanted 100% exploration that it took me 6 hours just for that castle around. Edit: for beginner, I would recommend Astrologer with high dexterity for sword-staff combo. Killing from afar with magic missile is definitely better in this game.
I don't wanna spoil people but those birds in the castle had me insanely happy that I chose to be a spell/sword in this game lmao. So hard to hit with a sword, so easy to hit with a spell.
@@jmorel42 because you will need glintstone pebbles from the start. The starting spell for Astrologer is Glintstone Pebble for single and Arc for aoe, a quick casting dart of energy. Decent damage, low FP cost and more importantly can be spam repeatedly.
Nonono if you killed the enemies once, just run past through them I would say. My rule is kill everything atleast once. Then if I die im running to where I died haha
Loving the game so far. It’s definitely easier to get into than other souls titles but - I love how you’re given choice about the difficulty. Roaming the open world has quite easy enemies ranging though to much harder as you go to certain areas, but as you get into the castles etc it’s literally like a hand crafted souls experience and bloody hard in parts too. Game looks bloody great. Really enjoying exploring it
the first area, Limgrave, left me thinking that it as a bit hard at times. Then I went to Liurnia. And I got mass slaughtered over and over. I feel like this game is really meant for multiplayer. The single player experience is very rough and hard. Some bosses seem too overwhelming for solo play.
yeah the storm veil castle was really hard to get through, though i may have been underleveled as there was a lot more exploring and minibosses to fight before storm veil castle
This game is nuts. This is everything I wanted and more from software and it’s still early! Imagine the updates down the line and the dlc that is surely to come! I’ll see you all in the lands between!
I've played 35 hours of Elden Ring. I feel like I've completed maybe 25% or 30% of the game. Maybe. And definitely no more than that. And it is the best videogame I've ever played. Other games can't even compare. It's like putting Dark Souls and Skyrim into a blender and mix them well, and then getting something 100 times better than any of them. Think about the best of the best of Dark Souls. Well.. the entire game (so far) is like that, and then better... And the scale of the game. No joke. It's really huge. And while it is huge, it still remains interesting. Game of the decade, perhaps more.
I feel the same way. I'm 20 hours in and I'm at work thinking about all the places I want to go back to and explore. Idk if I want to fight the dragon I found, open a secret with the new keys a found, or progress the story. I want to do it all and I'm so excited. Haven't felt this way about a video game in a very long time.
If you are only 25 hours in there is zero chance you have competed that much of the game. I’m 60 hours in plus maybe and I’ve completed maybe 30 percent. There are 100s of open world bosses
I'm about 150 hours in, headed toward the end game and adore Elden Ring. Yes, it's my first Fromsoft game, but it's the best game I've ever played. It's weird: it's not perfect. It has issues, the boss balancing is a bit off at times, and of course there are reused assets and bosses. But I don't care. The world is alive with creatures, factions, backstory, and an incredible environment in every area. Minor dungeons aren't quite as recycled as people claim, and the boss encounters are unforgettable and challenging. I'm playing on my XBox One and don't care about the graphics or anything like that. I'm hooked by the world, gameplay, and freedom Elden Ring offers. This game doesn't hold your hand or ask for more money. It simply delivers hour after hour. In comparison, I'm an AC fan who played Assassin's Creed Valhalla for 24 hours and promptly uninstalled it. Elden Ring is in a completely different league.
I know this is an old video but had to comment. I have never played a Souls game and had dismissed Elden Ring, this video has convinced me to give it a go. I think I would be missing out if I didn’t. Seriously great video, it addressed any doubts I was having whilst explaining what makes the game great. Thank again.
aside from your thoughts on the game, this is how a “review” video of a game should be made and should be the standard of reviewing games in general. People may or may not buy the game after watching your video but I think everyone will appreciate this kind of hard work and dedication. Thanks a lot snd keep up the good work.
I bought this game about 2 months ago and I have been hooked ever since. This is the game I have been waiting roughly 20 years for. The closest to perfect open world RPG with good combat, a good story, and a toxic fan base that I just love to troll 🤣
PS5 gameplay is awesome! I definitely love the faster spell casting. Seems like you can combine magic and melee like never before. After 6 hours, Elden Ring is meeting all my expectations!
@@hahahuhu9828 incantations are definitely slower than sorcery but they definitely aren't so slow that they feel clunky to weave into combat. i'm absolutely loving my faith build.
except skyrim had trash combat even for the time and terrible voice acting and a shallow world, honestly I don't know why we all loved skyrims so much back then. Just finished the video and realized he pointed out how scuffed skyrim is lol
I've played a couple of hours of Elden Ring and I'm not really getting a "Skyrim of the 2020's" vibe to be honest with you. I felt immersed in a fantasy world almost immediately with Skyrim (going where I want, reading things, picking up literally everything, solving puzzles, exploring living cities etc) where Elden Ring I get the impression it's going to be more of an open-world action RPG primarily concerned with fighting monsters. The multiplayer elements are a bit off-putting for someone who has never played a Dark Souls game before also; cryptic notes and ghosts leaping around everywhere. Hopefully, I get hooked next time I play - too many people saying it's a masterpiece to be wrong!
@@Nikells Yeah i'm not going expecting a Skyrim-like game for sure, but hoping it sets new standards for open world exploration and maybe Elder Scrolls devs can take some notes to implement into ES6 . I'm proceeding with realistic expectations and this is my first Souls gake aswell.
@@AKVisuals You'd be forgiven for expecting a Skyrim-like game considering the review video said just that. The fantasy art style of Elden Ring is extremely cool but I've not seen anything that I'd consider a new standard for open worlds yet: I haven't played for very long though. Good luck with your first foray!
I'm at 87 hours, level 180 and I just got done with Morgott. Needless to say, I'm going to be well over 100+ hours and level 200+ by the time I finish. I still have like 5 or 6 mandatory and God knows how many non-mandatory bosses before I beat the game.
I’m currently level 224, with around 130 hours of play time. I have beaten the main story line but have been refusing to start ng+ because there is still so much left to explore, and so many bosses I haven’t found and killed. Definitely love this game.
As a very old school gamer (born 76), I love the soulsborne games so much. After 500hrs with Nioh 2 I was so ready for Elden Ring and I love it! Difficulty is good, it‘s not hard as a vet but I see why new players can suffer. The open word is so great!! So many surprises!! I‘m only 20hrs in and can already say that it‘s my new no. 1! Started as wretch of course and will go 70% strength and 30% magic build 👴🏻
@@Niklas.Kirchner It's definitely harder than those games, both were pretty spammy and simple. And I say this as someone who's loved every single FromSoft game since Demon's (except DkS2). Elden has a ton more depth to its mechanics that you pretty much have to use at one point or another, I'm on the 2nd half of the game and bosses can get pretty insane. Even some regular enemies are ridiculous. That said I don't use summons, spirits or shields so the combos and roll catch moves in this game definitely give me more trouble than I would if I just blocked
Souls games aren't really hard but it's that you have to rewire your brain about how you approach video games to be successful. Most people are just used to games where you press one attack button and your character auto targets the enemy leaps towards across the screen to hit kill it right away, eventually requiring almost zero effort from the player.
But what makes this game so good in your opinion? As a gamer for 25+ years I struggle to get the reason why so many people like anything from FromSoftware. They're like the Harry Potter of gaming. Everybody loves them, but... they could be so much more, the way I see it.
@Blauze ok . That's a question that I would have to write an essay on so I'll just leave main points. There's thousands of videos on why Fromsoft makes great games but here are a few reasons of mine. : world building . No other developer imho has better world building and lore than a fromsoft game. Every piece of environment , every weapon , npc , mid boss and boss have very deep lore and deliberately placed . and they don't hold your hand and try to guide you through them. You experience it organically . There's a reason that to this day , streamers STILL make lore videos about the Souls series . Because that's how much is still there and people are finding. Gameplay is challenging but 9 times out of ten, you die because it's your fault. Death is more of a learning experience with fromsoft games. If it was extremely difficult, people wouldn't be able to do complete runs at level one with no damage. Boss encounters. Again , no one does it better. From a developer standpoint, their boss AI is pretty amazing with its pathfinding and ability to change multiple states (aggro when you try to button mash , rush and keep pressure when you try to heal , etc). Beating even the first main boss gives you that feeling you get when you normally beat an end boss in most other games. Finally (for the sake of making this way too long.) And this is something a gamer of 25 years should appreciate. Fromsoftware approach to game design is old school. Like a zelda game. No micro transactions to boost exp. Or to buy that cool looking gears. No. You play the game , beat the thing , get the gear. Also it pulls you back to searching for guides and walk throughs when you get stuck. There's so much more but this is long enough lol.
@@tygeta9851 Okay I'm extremely surprised to read "world building and lore" as your first point, because you're the first person I hear praise it and I hang out with many diehard fans and speedrunners of the series. From my perspective the lore is pretty barebones, but maybe you can get really invested into it. That's true for tons of RPGs so I guess Dark Souls can fit in that category too. Nothing to say about the gameplay, except that I appreciate losing due to my own mistakes instead of losing through glitches or design flaws. But that's only because I'm a retro gamer and old consoles are littered with faulty hitboxes so it's refreshing to actually be bad instead of the game being bad. But I don't follow you on boss encounters. To me, boss encounters _are not too hard_ but they break all immersion. When I face one, I'm not a protagonist fighting a demon anymore, I'm a gamer trying to read the patterns and exploit them. No other game takes me away from the game itself, and to me it's not really a good thing. Especially when most of the time it's mostly memorizing attacks, step back, do a couple strikes when the opening presents itself and dodge back away. And yeah I do appreciate the old school approach to games. No hints, nothing telling you what to do, that's a good thing. However, I can't say the _lack_ of microtransations is a good thing because it's a given. Instead, microtransations are a flaw. It makes it better than games like Genshin or other gacha crap, but it's still just the vanilla, normal way to play a game, so it's not a strength by itself, it's just the way things should go.
✓ Developers and story writer with excellent reputation ✓ Production extended to refine the game instead of rushing to release ✓ Thoroughly played review copies vehemently acclaimed by numerous reputable and independent gaming channels The Holy Trinity of an impending masterpiece.
I wish they would find a way to do this for physical releases it would be very convenient, can’t way. Hope everyone enjoys another banger from fromsoft.
I have played this game for 10/12 hours straigh..I didnt even realize the time only stoped for snacks... this havent happn for years now to me getting this inmersed in a game... I hope FPS get fixed in PC soon but that doesnt diminished my XP at all so far.. Great Review
Can confirm that the latest PS4 runs this great as well, and the game runs even better with the patch they just released. Very few slow downs and never when it was critical to my actions and the graphics still look great no artifacts or abnormal looking textures. Picking up my pre ordered Xbox One version to play with friends on Friday, but I imagine it'll run just as well as on PS4.
I was worried for the PS4 version so i was hesitant to buy it there but yeah it looks like it will definitely be playable, in the end i went with the PC version but it's nice to see it will be an amazing experience no matter where you play it.
The Xbox one version unfortunately is really bad, the PS4 version is basically PC on low which is fine, but Xbox One is 900p, which isn't so bad, but it ALSO reduces the animation quality of the enemies to 15fps (while the game/player runs at 30fps). Looks janky as hell and is hard to dodge properly. Avoid the Xbox version unless you're on the series x/s.
the fact that there's not microtransactions or anything in this game and it stands on its gameplay alone I amazing so far I've made it to rennalla and I've been getting my ass kicked. It's so refreshing to actually have to think how you wanna take on the boss instead of going like a tank and steamroller everything
Yeah, but it's a bit goofy the way enemies don't react to stumbling over dead bodies, the way they would in a Metal Gear game. Would be rather cool if it were true stealth and you could move bodies to avoid detection. The AI is just dumb.
@@RedRocket415 I mean, I don't think it's fair to compare stealth on Elden Ring and similar games to stealth on a game like MGS which is focused entirely on stealth. But yeah, RPGs definitely need to step up their stealth gameplay a little bit
using a different weapon class, or even a different weapon of the same class and going through the game again is a completely new experience while also constantly finding new things no matter how much you play the game has so much replay ability, furthermore like he said in the video, your rewarded for looking for secret paths/ just exploring, if you look you will find
Thank you for being honest about PC performance problems. A lot of reviewers are trying to downlplay the severity of FPS problems which obviously matter in a souls game. Better to wait for performance patches.
@@chaoticstarfish3401 Shd wait for the patch review. Also, as the other poster said, do not rule out possibility of last-minute anti-cheat such as denuvo.

@@Alex-nx3me clearly you don’t understand the issue. 30 series or not; most peoples performance is poor - it’s not a graphical issue. Go watch digital foundry’s PC review video and educate yourself.
One of the major plus points for me is the world building. Developers should take a page from FromSoft in this regard. This game LOVES explorers, and rewards them accordingly. The game goes out of its way to give you non-conform paths to travel. Figuring out how to get somewhere is one of the ways this game engages its players with mad respect.
So I'm a bit concerned about the poor framerates on PC, and I agree with the speculation in this review that the anti-cheat engine could well be the culprit. I typically play the fromsoft games in offline mode anyway, so i'm curious if anyone knows if the anti-cheat will be running in offline mode or if its disabled when playing offline? I have a 12600k and 3070 (which you would think would be more than enough), but I also am lucky enough to have a PS5 and could get it on PS5 instead if relatively beefy PC hardware doesn't seem to help with this issue...
I’m gonna say this I’m extremely grateful they made Elden Ring easier. As a physically disabled gamer. Who is passionate about video games I enjoy. I’ve wanted to play a souls game for years never thinking I’d be able to. I love the challenge of Elden Ring. And I’m happy I’m able to play it.
@@JustifyTheseHeathens I wasn’t making excuses I have been physically disabled since birth I still figured out a way to play video games and beat that challenge so technically I’m stronger than you
In this video, to include all of your videos on this game, you quite intelligently articulate everything we...the gamers need to know before we purchase this game. As I am a long-haul truck driver, it is near-to-impossible for me to delve into a game such as this right now, as my career takes ultimate precedence over everything. But when I do get this game, I will re-watch some of your key "how to videos," & just get lost in this immersive world of Eldon Ring. Thanks for the video brudder!
Great review and such an unbelievable game. I am 160+ hours into my first play through and still have so much to explore and do. I can see myself doing multiple 150 hour plus play throughs. So very much worth the price of entry and beyond what any game has ever delivered before.
best review i've heard of this game. I like that despite you knowing how great of a game it is you still point out the flaws so people understand what they're buying
I’m grateful for legit game reviews like this channel that has substance, and actually critiques the game with both objective and subjective experiences. So sick of reviews from IGN/Gamespot - they instantly slap a 9/10or 10/10 rating on each new game solely for it being the new AAA title. Awesome review, Fextralife, with minimal spoilers as well. Can’t wait to play it tomorrow!!
Honestly, I love Souls games graphics and this game looks gorgeous to me. Also, great review, we agree on so many levels, you sound exactly like me when I'm trying to convince my friends to play this game. Especially on the Skyrim comparison.
First off, thank you for your build guides. As a person who’s only completed Witcher 3 on Death March and beat Lords of the Fallen, they’ve been an immense help. As far as the price? I almost never pay full price for games. This was the exception. To me, I’m supporting a dev that still cares about delivering fine content. Regarding framerates, I didn’t buy the game until 2 weeks ago. However, I have it installed on a 2060Super/i7 3820 build as well as my 3080/5900x build. On the former, I dip into the 40s at 1080p. On the latter I use ultrawide but suffer no dips. I’m also using flawless widescreen on the 3080 rig and I’ve heard it helps with stuttering.
At 40 hours in the game has been absolutely amazing, my only real qualm is the 60 fps cap on PC. I haven't had any fps drop issues as mentioned however.
12:30 when he's talking about how long the game could take to beat in total, then you realise people are also speed running this game in 30 minutes... You have to love how it's truly open world and you can really do just about anything you want as you play.
Thanks so much for your dedication and passion for video games. I'm pretty sure it mustn't have been easy to get this review ready and I really appreciate the work you guys do. I'm a huge fan of from Software's games and can't wait to embark on this absolutely amazing new adventure. Oh, ELDEN RING!
I think you nailed the review. I find it hard to believe anything could compete with this for GotY possibly even decade. We will either talking about it for years to come or we are in for an amazing treat if something can top this. The amount of shock and awe that the game gave me is unlike anything I have played in so long. The wonder sent me back to being a kid playing video games.
"Elden Ring is the Skyrim of the 2020's" I've been thinking the same thing even though it's a bold statement. The only thing that ever broke my addiction to Skyrim was its long load times so I'm afraid of how addicted I already am to ER and its near seamless gameplay xD
Starfield is my most anticipated game of the year but I always enjoyed the lore and world of darksouls. Taking that and making it open world could give Bethesda some serious competition.
@@jacksobrooks and i can 100% see why so many would feel that way, but the way i see it, they have been trying to develop in an area that just doesnt suit them, and thats with Online stuff. As always fantastic review, you were able to give me all the information I wanted without spoiling anything and without being redundant, I just hope my gtx 1660ti will handle this game lol
I spoke with another creator and I'm using a Dell i7-7700k with 32GB Ram and a GTX 1060 w/6 GB Ram, playing on a 1440p monitor. He played it with an RTX 3080, I believe, but tried "lower tier" VCs, like the 1060, and said that I/we should be able to easily game on Medium or High at 60/FPS... I'm kind of concerned about the frame rate ebbs, now, but hope they'll work it out sooner than later! Good gaming, all!
Beware the game seems to have performance issues, fextra was using a 2080ti and has issues, so likely this game still needs love. Sounds like it will be brutal on gpu`s until then. So a fair warning to people with a 1660ti, 1660, 1660 super, this game will not be easy to run.
@@glow4417 Fextra was not playing at 1080p, he was playing at least at 1440p and with the highest settings, besides the recommended gpu is a 1070 which is roughly as powerful as a 1660ti so my guess is that this game will run at 60fps at medium settings in 1080p, at least I hope.
This is why I just subscribed to you…the mage build is why I subscribed but if it wasn’t this would have…I’ve been saying this game is gonna be the next modern day skyrim
Just hit over 200 hours after 3 or 4 weeks with the game. One of my favorites that I've ever played when it comes to gameplay. The lore is fantastic but I cannot say it's one of my favorites story-wise simply because a story isn't told to you. I know that's part of the series but I'm a sucker for playing through a story.
couldnt of released at a worse time for me, says its being delivered up until 11pm of the night and the next day is my sons birthday and then i go away for 2 days after that 😪
My holiday starts tomorrow and I will have a whole week to sink in Elden Ring. Nobody knows about my free week and I'm going go keep it that way. It will be glorious.
I have Elden Ring, have played Elden Tong for hours, and yet am still watching this video on my lunch break at work, because I am obsessed with Elden Ring.
Visually I think Elden Ring is a perfect example of an emphasis on Art Direction vs Graphical Fidelity, and personally I would take better art direction over graphical fidelity every single time. A game with INSANE graphical fidelity but lacking good or strong art direction would just look bland. Also I really hope the PC issues can be solved with a day one patch. It would be absolute suicide for FromSoft to let the PC version release in such a poor state hours earlier than the console versions, so hopefully they're confident in this patch.
I mean not really, insane graphical fidelity will just emulate real life really well, so has every potential to be just as beautiful (or bland) as real life, that said good art direction can display a different kind of aesthetic which appeals just as much if not more in some cases, and obviously a combination of the two makes for an amazing game.
That excuse would work if the game was looking like Drawn to Death, but it is targeting realistic representation of everything including the ugly af monsters. Save the biased defense, this isn't art direction related. This is bloody engine not having the chops to handle that many high resolution textures continuously and still hold a solid 60 fps. Graphical fidelity had to be curtailed, which is why they have muddy textures in first place, you think they sampled shitty looking textures on purpose? I swear people love to defend what they like by saying some of the most ridiculous things. I mean how could it be art direction, when the rest of the textures look good and aren't muddy, just a few are. 😂🤣😂 Why the hell are you even trying to explain that away? The engine itself is ass, that's what. No one seems to pay From enough to get a new and improved engine that doesn't suck in some annoying way. If you played any of their games, you should know the whole frame timing bullshit, which need to micro stuttering and I'm pretty sure those games are still suffering from that shit today, Bloodborne for sure has frame pacing issues.
@@evilformerlys4704 lmao you are calling the commentors opinion bias just to prove your bias. And i agree with the commentor, art direction is vastly superior to graghics. And the graghics arent even bad in elden ring lol.
This game is fantastic! I have not been this blown away since Skyrim and this is way better. It is so much bigger than any of you realized. To experience everything in this game it is easily 250 hrs and that is before any DLC. With that said tho, it is not perfect. On PC it is a lot like Cyberpunk. For the first few weeks, it was almost unplayable and that is unacceptable for a $60 game. On PS5 the graphics are considerably worse but runs smooth. We should not have to choose between graphics and gameplay. After 2 weeks I was so aggravated on PC (with a 5900X and a 6900XT) that I actually bought it again on PS5. But, between my progress and graphics, I went back to PC. After a few patches, it is better, but it still will studder as soon as you get out in the open world. Playing offline helps and is very much recommended. It becomes a hot mess with all the bloodstains and messages everywhere and the studdering is lessened. Disabling EAC does not really help any more than playing offline so do not waste your time.
I'm gonna preface what I'm about to say with the following. I have never played a FromSoftware game so I have no experience with the controls, difficulty, lore, etc although I do know their games have a big fanbase. I decided to try Elden Ring mostly because it was open world. Personally, and again this is probably influenced by my lack of experience with their games, I dislike the game so much. Yes, the difficulty is a big barrier but also the lack of guidance. You really are thrown in the deep end, except for the tutorial on combat, you are on your own. No waypoints, no quest markers, no character dialogue to set the scene. It's a very strange experience. However, despite all that, I'm still giving the game a chance although I have no clue what I am meant to do or anything.
The game is so stupid and if you actually finish it your going to come away with a “wtf” feeling. I genuinely think people say they love these games just to sound cool when it’s actually a very stupid game
I think this game is about exploring? Just roam around and try understanding what is going on, what does this mean, what is this etc etc. At least that is what I got from few little videos I saw. Never played FromSoftware games so I dunno but if Elden Ring is trully like this that is actually awesome But again I love to stop by and look at details, observe, try to understand, immerse myself etc which some of games won't let you do kinda XD
With GPU prices slowly dropping, a new game needing patch and mod support, being a heavy wiki user who doesn't have the patience or time to discover all of the items and content, I'll be looking forward to playing this title in about a year. If Dark Souls, Witcher, Red Dead Redemption series have taught me anything, it's that sometimes it's just better to wait as you get more content, a more polished experience and all the questions answered simply by waiting. I look forward to grabbing this on Steam sale when that time comes.
Wtf, I’m a souls veteran and can say that some bosses are easily the most challenging then any other games: not even main bosses!! Like black blade kindred, soo awesome. I applaud my deaths soo many times, or godskin apostle 10/10
Especially if you choose not to use the games trivialising mechanics. No summons / no cheese weapons Malenia was truly an exercise in perseverance and mental fortitude.
@@bencarter5563 yes this is why elden ring is a masterpiece. You make it as difficult as you want. Killing Margit solo in like 10 tries only having leveled vigor, strength and faith once with a base confessor with no magic just my starting sword felt better than almost anything I've experienced in a video game.
The game can look downright stunning at times. When I got to my first castle area (off the beaten path) I couldn’t believe the scale. Not only is there this huge open world, but there are these individual MASSIVE traditional dungeon type areas, with as much care and attention at Dark/Demons Souls. Insane.
i'd kinda gotten used to what i was seeing as i made my way through the first area and first story boss then i walked out into Liurnia and it was "ohhh my god" all over again not to mention the fact that they somehow managed to make a completely open world that's as interconnected and vertical as Yharnam
I had this feeling for a videogames twice in my life before. Ocarina Of Time then Skyrim. From Software bring me the third one at 36 years old. The perfect mix between Breath Of The Wild, Dark Souls and Skyrim.
Just an Update: im pushing 860 hrs on Elden Ring from my First Playthrough being completely blind. & im Still not drained from playing yet. still finding graces and npcs alike 💯
Wow! Took me 390 hours and I thought that was a long time. Of course, this was my first souls game and I didn't even know you were invincible while rolling until halfway through.
First time playing a souls game, I desperately needed a break from ESO and even though I'm complete trash at ER due to my muscle memory of ESO I'm absolutely loving it
Do you have any thoughts on how the game reacts with m/kb versus controller? Did you happen to see if there were video options for DLSS with Nvidia graphics cards? I have a 2080 and I worry about the performance via PC. Hopefully From and Nvidia update the game and driver performance asap.
Never buy from software games on launch for PC and xbox. Just look at all of their other games for xbox and pc they were such bad ports for so long some still are bad
2:38 “Possibly the best gaming experience in the gaming market today”. I’m playing it on PS5 and it’s stuttering terribly! Evidently it’s the same on PC and Series X. The frame rate is all jerky. You reviewers must have all had some different early copy.
I jumped the gun with this comment and take it back!! The game is just so amazing that I stopped noticing the stuttering . It’s only very prevalent in certain places and unfortunately one of those places is when you first enter the open world…….which sets you up with a negative opinion of it from the get go. But like I stated, I stopped noticing after awhile.
@@clockworklemon9243 Yeah, as I said, I jumped the gun with that comment, I was being a bit pedantic. It’s running fine. Its an incredible experience: There are areas in this game where I just stare and marvel at the genius and attention to detail of these creators.
I agree with what you're saying I have 300 hours already in the game played it twice and I might play it a third time. It's just a fun game man I like to go and try to do everything correctly cuz the first two times I miss little things here or there.

I noticed the wiki had info on multiplayer items talking about invasion cooldown, do you know any specifics like how long that is and if resummoning resets that cooldown?
Elden ring is great just don't get it on PC lol
Other developers make a game with the same mechanics as the last and it's a copy. FromSoftware does it and it's the greatest thing in the world.
I'm going to ask this question in the most serious way possible... At some point can you swim, or explore the visible sea?
“The Skyrim of the 2020s” is SO accurate. I haven’t felt this sense of wonder and excitement from a game since I first played Skyrim as a kid.
I'm 40
Skyrim seems mediocre compared to elden ring tho. The immersion is terrific but the quests can be boring. And combat is bad. Skyrim does have beautiful music
@@Artaxerxes. I somewhat agree, but Elden Ring has an 11 year advantage on Skyrim in terms of advances in tech and game design. At the time, for me at least, Skyrim was one of the best games I had played.
Chad elden ring vs virgin skyrim
@@Artaxerxes. this is true and that's why he said Skyrim "of the 2020's".
What you now see as boring aspects of Skyrim were a product of the times, it was quite immersive when it was released.
It's like you missed his point entirely.
I'm 100% okay with graphics that aren't cutting edge if it cuts down on development time and allows for more time spent on more important things. The game looks beautiful regardless.
problem is performance kind of sucks

After so many meh games and feeling like I need to play or I'll miss something in other games, it's nice to have game that I can't stop thinking about purely from the world and how much I want to keep playing it. I love this game, and feel like we haven't seen games like this in a long time.
For sure. I've been watching these videos at work for about a week, because I'm having withdrawals from the game. I'm 32 years old. Haven't felt this love since skyrim
"feel like we haven't seen games like this in a long time"
Well, not since Dark Souls 3 more like lol.
I've bought a few games lately since Elden Ring keeps dragging me back and putting those on pause.. ha
@Daniel Garrett lol this is a quality reply
Something you might want to correct- basic melee Combat is not just spamming R1 anymore at all, charged R2s and jump attacks deal huge stagger/poise damage, as does guard countering. Paired with Arts of War being more usable than weapon arts, the combat is far more evolved than it used to be in terms of viable options.
100% agreed, only thing they missed in this excellent review.
Art style > graphics
For basically everything. It is why 2d pokemon is better than 3d pokemon.
That maybe so, but for this particular game better graphics would have just made it better overall.
I keep seeing people say it should look better what game looks better then this especially one that is in a fantasy setting?
its not only the graphic issue but has performance issue with constant frame drop even on a 2080ti...
@@skywardsword7367 God of War probably (fantasy kinda), Horizon Zero Dawn 2, Red dead redemption probably too from the looks of it
I don't play newer games on pc so I don't normally run into those issues.
@@jadenkootenay8549 replayability isn't in ng+ but rather going for different builds with different routing for each build on a new save file.
@@Ghorda9 yea this is me. As soon as a finsih one playthrough I start another with new build. Lots of different options

How many hours you got at this point?

Was hesitant to buy the game due to how limited my spare time is right now but I just couldn't pass on a FromSoftware game.

Just so you are aware, Tree sentinel always lags at the bottom of that hill, it's likely a bug and not a performance issue. You fight him at the top of the hill, no drops.
You sir deserve more than a virtual thumbs up
Wowwww never knew this
Thanks
it is definitely performance issue.

@Nastymold this is really getting out of hand. First H3 and now fextra? Damn...
Me too, though the price for now is way too high.:(
I love the game, can’t stop playing.
Why not prisoner if you're going for mage with high dexterity

DLC you say? (Announced today.) HYPE.

Its not like skyrim at all. If you think its just skyrim like game you will be disappointed.
except skyrim had trash combat even for the time and terrible voice acting and a shallow world, honestly I don't know why we all loved skyrims so much back then.

@@Words-of-encouragement.-. I'm now at level 213 and I'm up in that tree level
The fact your reviews are always in depth but also dont sugar coat issues, is why i trust all the reviews for all games.
Lol that's hilarious. I haven't trusted game reviews for years.
It's not hard as a vet? Ok. But it's harder than DS3 and Sekiro in my opinion if you do the main quest to early
@@Niklas.Kirchner I thought sekiro was super hard
Whoa you say it's not hard? You must be soooo tuff in real life. I am very impressed. I bow down and worship you
Souls games aren't really hard but it's that you have to rewire your brain about how you approach video games to be successful. Most people are just used to games where you press one attack button and your character auto targets the enemy leaps towards across the screen to hit kill it right away, eventually requiring almost zero effort from the player.
There is no better feeling in gaming for me than experiencing a new From game for the first time. Can't wait for the incoming lore and guides videos.
Ikr
Only one I could get into was Bloodborne

U mean Base ps4? Or ps4 pro?
The Xbox one version unfortunately is really bad, the PS4 version is basically PC on low which is fine, but Xbox One is 900p, which isn't so bad, but it ALSO reduces the animation quality of the enemies to 15fps (while the game/player runs at 30fps). Looks janky as hell and is hard to dodge properly. Avoid the Xbox version unless you're on the series x/s.
for base ps4? thats what im interested in

the fact that there's not microtransactions or anything in this game and it stands on its gameplay alone I amazing so far I've made it to rennalla and I've been getting my ass kicked. It's so refreshing to actually have to think how you wanna take on the boss instead of going like a tank and steamroller everything
Stealth mechanics basically shot this game over the moon for me. So much fun.

Agree with the review. Throwing shade on older souls titles, though. Those were deliberate narrative choices, not missing features.

I’m grateful for legit game reviews like this channel that has substance, and actually critiques the game with both objective and subjective experiences.

Pre ordered, played day one, about 30 hours in and I absolutely love it.
I have Elden Ring, have played Elden Tong for hours, and yet am still watching this video on my lunch break at work, because I am obsessed with Elden Ring.
Fextra Life has been my Dark Souls/Elden Ring BIBLE for years! I've beaten every souls game with Fextra Life on my second screen.

Elden Ring is the Skyrim Todd Howard thought was impossible.
Agreed.
I subscribed to you twice,.
Fantastic review, explaining the important aspects without spoiling any content. keep it up
Thanks for uploading a spoiler free review. If only other outlets had the same self awareness.
Never played FromSoftware games so I dunno but if Elden Ring is trully like this that is actually awesome
But again I love to stop by and look at details, observe, try to understand, immerse myself etc which some of games won't let you do kinda XD
The music still give me shivers. I wish I could delete all my memories. Playing it the first time was a BLAST.
Just Pre-ordered, thanks to your review it just made it more worth the risk. Can't wait to play

Nvidia has a driver ready for release but didn’t say it has DLSS support.I’m assuming it won’t but will be added within a week or two of game release.
From experience buy a controller. Mouse and keyboard controls are terrible.
@@nullpha I do have a controller which I used with DS3. Mouse and board was awful on DS3. I'll probably go with whichever is more fluid.
Never buy from software games on launch for PC and xbox. Just look at all of their other games for xbox and pc they were such bad ports for so long some still are bad

I'm on ps5 with very average tv and it's running smooth as silk for me.
