  • If you’re breastfeeding & you've got a lump in the breast which isn't going away, it's possible you've got abscess.
It’s also possible that it could be something else as well, like a cyst or a galactocele, so it's important that you get yourself checked out as soon as possible. You can have an ultrasound scan if you get a referral from your GP.
Jackie Hall, IBCLC, offers her thoughts and advice to help support women and explains how the problems occur and also that help is near to hand.

I am currently in hospital with 7 incisions from abscesses in my right breast. Ouch is all I can say. I’ve nursed 6 babies and only had basic mastitis once, this time is a whole new thing. I’m fortunately able to pump and no incisions are under the flange though it is EXTREMELY painful. Will I give up? Absolutely not. I’ll get through the pain and we will be back on track soon

Many women worry when they have some form of surgery on their breast as to whether they will be able to continue to breastfeed on that side. Whilst there are no guarantees, the best way is to try. Much depends on how the surgeon cut you and how much of the breast was affected. I would suspect that you would be OK, in regards to an abscess.
While you have had an abscess, it would be worth checking out the video on breast implants - thebreastfeedingcompanion.com/project/breastfeed-with-implants/ - as the same question arises here. Hope that helps.

It's important that any possible abscess is diagnosed by a professional, who will tell you the next step, but an abscess will need to be aspirated, and anti-biotics are usually given afterwards.
