I will say that without a doubt the knowledge I have gained from you has advanced my career tenfold!
I went from having a basic understanding of electrical to being able to diagnose very complex CAN communication systems!
I have actually gained such an thorough understanding that I am now able to teach new guys at my shop and I've become kind of the de facto teacher for every new guy that starts!
I can't even begin to thank you enough for the knowledge you have given me!

one of my old supervisors told me when I got my first supervisor spot "Train your employees under you to be able do your job and instill a desire to always be learning/improving so they are wanted by everyone (for their skills), and just as important Treat them so they don't want to go anywhere else." It's a statement I took to heart and has served me well over the years. I have moved up and seen my employees take my spot vs someone from another area multiple times.

*Well said gentlemen. I really enjoyed your conversation. Even though I am an Automotive locksmith I follow you and others because I want to learn more. With regards to your last question Mario, I had a similar situation. I just started to do UA-cam videos and I had one person attacking me for sharing information with others and that I am screwing the industry. I explained to that guy (it was a guy) that DIYers might be able to follow what I show, but they do not have the equipment that I have to do the job. For a DIYer to do a job that a shop can do it for him/her for lets say $150, the equipment a DIYer will have to buy to do the job himself will cost him thousands of dollars. He/she will only go and buy these equipment only if they are thinking to do this job as a career. It's that simple. The way I see it, is technicians helping other technicians and as I always said, if you are good at what you are doing, there will always be plenty of work out there. As Paul said, stop thinking only about yourself. Knowing that you helped someone out, the feeling is tremendous. Once again thank you both for helping out, not just myself but many many other technicians. God bless you both.*

Actually watching this while out of town for training. I have had plenty of diyers watch a video for a job and then decide it’s above their head and bring it to the shop for us to do. Usually when they do that they understand better what it involves and don’t hassle us about labor costs.

The only thing I have to say thank you for teaching us , since I was 15 years I was finding the way to learn mecanic never couldn’t , I had 2 years not working of a operation on my hip, broke and with family hard to paid a mechanic, my first video mecanic was Cris fix , I was happy that someone was fanaliy teaching mechanic, then later other mecanic video, then later Scanner Danner video, At frist it’s seen impossible to learn Scanner Danner mechanic video, but watching your videos over and over finally I learn a little more better , and more interesting to learn more electronic mechanic , and I thank my God, that he but people like Scanner Danner, sory that I wrote to much Scanner Danner, thank you , and my respect for you, God bless you and your family, what you have done to me and others I thank you from the bottom of my heart,Sorry for my English

Two standouts within the industry. It was the highlight of ASTE to have dinner with both of you and discuss our experiences and pitfalls in auto repair. We all do this because of the love we have for the trade and the challenge. You both inspire me to be a better tech and a better advocate for the industry.

Hats off to you guys! As someone who could not afford training degrees and certifications out of high school, content like you two create has tremendously helped me in my journey. Anyone who says the internet has had a negative effect on the industry has the wrong perspective. I have found that there is plenty of work to go around and as technicians, we should really start thinking more like a team than individuals. We are all just products of our experiences.
"You can have anything you want in life, IF you help others get what they want" - Zig Ziglar
    Also, a response to the shop owners who do not want to train technicians. I have personally worked with some of these individuals. I met a really wise man not too long ago who said this;
"People worry that if you train someone, they will leave. What is worse, is if you don't train them, and they stay."
Thank you for all that you guys do!

Excellent interview. You guys have paved my road to success! I wouldn’t be where I was today without you guys. Along with many others. The internet is here, not going anywhere. I don’t think anyone has to worry about their job being stolen. This industry is growing more and more complex every year and the undeserving techs will be weeded out. The average tech looking at these videos will lose interest or not absorb the content. It takes a certain type of technician with a high drive for success, to fully comprehend the process you guys spoke about. Furthermore I opened my business a few years ago and I am still in that starting phase mentioned at the beginning of the interview. It really feels lately like nothings going as quick as it should or I’m making as much as I should and it’s frustrating. I’m understaffed can’t find a good technician. But this video just now gave me some inspiration to keep fighting on. So once again you guys have saved my business! From the bottom of my heart thank you!

Hey guys, DIYer here, maybe a tad more than that, I went to LTI a million years ago for automotive but ended up an electrician, so I have a pretty good grasp on the theory end of this. I honestly don’t think there’s enough DIYers out there to hurt the automotive industry, most folks you talk to think you need a degree in computer science to work on a car (probably wouldn’t hurt ! Lol) I have a shop 4 miles from my house and I love the owner, he’s open 7 days a week but I can’t use him because he won’t pay to get a decent tech in there. So I’d say if you’re an aspiring tech watch as much Scanner Danner, Super Mario, SMA and Pine Hollow etc. as you can, along with learn all you can from anyone that’s willing to teach you and be humble and appreciative when they do. As for shop owners, train your people and pay them as well as you can afford, it’s only setting you up to succeed. Thanks Super Mario and Paul for what you do I can’t tell you how much I enjoy your content…well I mean we’re friends so I could tell you but it’d take a while ! Lol

Knew you had to be super busy so just gave you a quick hello in the lunch room. As mentioned I got your book when it very first came out about 10 years ago, back when you paid the one time fee to view it with a password. There's quite a story behind the timing of you putting it out right then and helping more than you could know at just the right time. Maybe one day I can tell you. You are a natural at teaching, the way you convey the material makes it easy to understand. How many great techs quote ScannerDanner's theories/saying/teachings? I don't think any single person, has done more to educate this industry than you. I've lost count at the number of techs I've either come across personally, or watched in videos who have learned from you. Always humble, always complimenting other techs, always willing to teach others, always the first with new knowledge and techniques. This industry will talk about you long after you are gone. Thank you for all your efforts.-John D.

1st off, great interview guys! A deeper dive into the diy'er; why is a diy'er fixing his own stuff? What made me a diy'er in the first place? For me, not being able to afford a vehicle that didn't need a lot of work or some other thing(s) wrong with it that made it super obtainable ie cheap. Which means that vehicle is probably quite needy in the maintenance department. Needs that I definitely can't afford to pay a professional to handle. If I could afford that, I wouldn't be driving a beater in the first place lol. So how much money did the knowledge I gained from watching these great videos take out of a techs pocket? Roughly, zero dollars. I couldn't afford to pay him anyways. Thanks for all you guys do to help us broke folks who have two options, fix it ourselves or walk!

Thank you guys and the guys like you who are helping out people with the inititive to get things done.
One thing I've learned over the years is that if you're going to put yourself in the position of being the professional that people turn to, be professional. Win or lose, do it with honor.
Think of any car that comes thru that door as BAR bait. Or your wifes car that she rolls your kids around in. Or even some guy that doesn't buy anything you recommend, but later that day is driving next to your mom.
Do proper, thorough inspections. Even if they decline, at least the customer knows about it and your tail is covered. And if you're going to make repairs, don't cut corners, make sure they're done right.
I would sure hate to find out an upper control arm bolt was left loose on an alignment I did and the guy lost control of his truck, crashed into my best friends wife and killed his family.
We have a responsibility bigger than many of us realize.

These are the standards we have today. Honestly as a master tech cuz of guys like scannerdanner, any many others , the reason why the industry is at loss and dying technicians is because of shop owners don’t take the extra step to send a qualified guy(at the least) to training and know why we don’t have technicians instead we have mechanics/parts changers. This why I took the step and not waiting for them but I took it into my own hands and studied on my own and learned how things work, potentiometer, thermistors, 5v ref, signals, power/ grounds, Modules, drivers etc. Thank you for you guys Salute God bless you guys.

Mario and I had the opportunity to sit down and have a discussion on several topics concerning our industry. He made a three-part series where he speaks to other technicians, trainers, and shop owners, and at the end of that series he had an interview with Azael "Oz" Sepulveda.
Oz, in the spur of the moment, was kind enough to offer two lucky winners a ScannerDanner book each plus a free year subscription for ScannerDanner Premium each! Mario will be announcing the winners in the coming future during a live-stream in his channel; Super Mario Diagnostics.

I’d like to add something to your point of knowing why you fixed it. I always say the before you make a final call that maybe is not so black and white. If that call is wrong what is my next step to fix this problem. And when you ask yourself that question before making a call, you’re more likely to be right the first time .

GOOD JOB GUYS....Three things I want to comment on:
    1. A shop owner should encourage and pay for tech training. If a tech then leaves, it is for one of 2 reasons. More pay or work place conditions, which is your fault, or because he wants to be a shop owner himself, in which case, he'd have left at some point anyway. In the 2nd case, stay on good terms with him, he may be a good source for a solution on a problem job you have. Called networking. Just remembering how much money he made for you will help dull the pain of his leaving. DONE RIGHT YOU'VE NOT LOST A TECH, YOU'VE GAINED AN ALLY.
    2. Years ago we had the livery stable that tended our horses. Now we have auto techs to do the same job and with the EVs' we will adapt to take care of them as well.
    3. As for your posting on the net, it will give the DIYer the knowledge to know what he can do and how he should do it and when he should bring it to us instead. I honestly believe that you'll only loose 1 in 10 jobs if that many to DIYers by posting on the net. MOST PEOPLE DO NOT FIX THEIR OWN VEHICLE. THINK ABOUT IT.... Why are we shot of techs if everyone fixes their own cars ??????

From Bogotá, Colombia all I can say with my soul is really thank you guys for teaching us your talent and knowledge, because it is also a talent. I think people in these career and in general feel envy and jealous of others, including the family and friends just because of money, they are doing their job just to earn more money but with dissatisfaction and adding to their stress the personal problems, so they have to rethink what they are doing.
Now I will share about my story to you guys, I studied business administration here in my country but never liked it, after graduating, I went in 2015 to US legally to study first English and then mechanical engineering at Houston Community College but never liked mechanical too and also for the cost I changed to automotive technology associated 2 years program in the same college. The problem that we international students have to face is that the semester is really EXPENSIVE for international students, we have to pay like three times more of what a resident or US citizen pay and the critical part comes that by immigration law we are not allowed to work while we are studying and our currency is devalued compared to US dollars, so that’s the reason I chose only the 2 years program which I really like. Then after graduated for automotive We are allowed to work for just one year at the field we studied. I worked this year 2019 at Subaru dealership and it was great and I was really happy until sadly my permit is over so I had to return to my country since I didn’t want to stay illegal in the US. I share all of this because Paul, I watched one of your videos with easy English to understand, good pronunciation and explanation, so I subscribed to your channel and after that I felt in love about electrical stuff and diagnostics. Then COVID problem arrived. Right know I am not working😢 and I want to find an opportunity in US or Canada in my feel obviously migrating legally and also want to study electrical engineering since we know we will need more energy on the near future for sure, but my actual financial situation and our devalued currency Colombian pesos got me stuck here and more over the wages here are really low. But anyway thanks 🙏 to you guys and God Blessed you for find a Pat in my life even though I still consider myself an amateur automotive technician and hopefully electrician😅. All I can ask is for help specially in Canada because it’s easier for Colombians to migrate there, all I need is from my country I need to find just a employer sponsor in Canada, hope I make my dreams come true and want to sent you a hug from here guys. Best regards Paul and Mario and is an honor to hear you guys. Finally forgot to mention thanks also too Eric O from SMA, Eric the Car Guy, Pine Hollow auto diag, advance level auto, Chrisfix ,timmythetoolman, Victor Martinez and more channels for your time and help to the WORLD in YT and sorry for not my perfect English

One problem is why shop owners do not want to pay for training is that they do not want to pay more money to the tech. He/she is a slave for them.
That can apply to many fields.
One guy told me why he left his job at a factory that made car accesories. He was a welder and the pay was per piece. There was a norm of the pieces he had to weld to get his salary 100%. At first he was a rookie and made like 80%, He got more skilled and made more and more. One day he made like 120% over the norm. Quess what, the management did not want to pay him 120%, they just raised the norm for him.

      Maybe so...
But there are organizations working to fix that...
And there's plenty of good shops!
But the reality is - blaming it only on the shop owners and managers is shortsighted - just as blaming it all on the clients, techncians or service advisors would be.
We must all take ownership when it comes to the state of our profession if it is going to improve.
We all play a part in the "where we are" - and most who haven't attended an event like ASTE would say something very similar.
But after you've attended an event like ASTE, VisionKC or AAPEX? You quickly realize the industry isn't nearly as bad as you thought.
      Does it need improvement? Sure!
I've been told my whole life "you get what you say" - maybe it's time to start speaking of our industry what we expect it to be.

Your are not cheapening the industry a DYI will do it without the videos. Now I see so many people who do not have any mechanical ability. I had wrenches in my hands since I was 2yo now the computer controlled vehicles are not what I like but with y'alls videos I can get by on most things. The thing I hate is the throw away vehicles that are being made when repairs cost more than the vehicle's value.

    • @ZoomAutoDiag
      @ZoomAutoDiag 2 роки тому +1

My opinion is and I always tell my customers that repair price and the value of the vehicle, have NOTHING to do with each other. A car is a means of travel. If they want to not do repairs bc of the value of that vehicle, they have an option to buy a new car with a tall price tag and higher insurance, or get another used vehicle with its own set of problems. If the vehicle is fixable and will be safe on the roads for not only the driver of that family but other families out on the road then there shouldn't be a reason not to make the repairs. The vehicle's condition after the repair will make it a valuable means of transportation. I think we need to stop that mind set IMHO. I'd love to hear other people's thoughts on this.

People who are scared of EVs can't fix conventional ICE vehicles. Fight me.

I don't think shop owner should fit the whole bill when it comes to training. It should b half n half. If the technician is reluctant to get training the shop owner shouldn't invest in them or chase them to do it.

From my little experience, shop owners or managers should never make favoritism and trying to shine one out of all. This kind of treatment will disable sharing info. between techs.

The shop owner that is upset at content creators like you Paul is the one that doesn’t have the knowledge himself to do the complex diagnostic. I ran into that a couple years ago when a lady had her timing belt done at a shop. She had a check engine light for cam crank correlation after the new timing belt was installed. The shop replaced both cam position sensors and the crank position sensor which obviously didn’t fix the problem. I went with her to the shop and he told me he’s a technician that goes to training owns scan tools that are worth thousands of dollars.
I asked him how he diagnosed that all three sensors were bad and he finally admitted that they read the correlation code and replaced all sensors.
I called him a parts changer. If I listed the slew of insults he called me after that we both would get banned, but I got him to refund all the money paid. The lady and I were told to never come back to his shop. 😂😂
