Wonderful instruction turning. Can't thank you enough, Jimmy, for taking the time to share this with the turning community. People, I have taken Jimmy's turning class and I totally endorse that everyone should not pass up any opportunity to do the same if at all possible. You will be learning from a master turner PLUS a master teacher. His instruction covers the water for honing the skills that will make you a better turner the very day you walk out of one of his classes. How to sharpen a tool (get him to talk about how he sharpens a scraper), tool presentation to wood, turning speed, designing for a project, etc. Sorry to get carried away....but here is a guy that has spent his entire life studying the art of turning and you just don't want to pass up a opportunity to hear about his life's studies.

Thank you Jimmy for sharing your technique on turning bowls. I’ve never used a lathe to turn a bowl so maybe I shouldn’t be posting here. But, with such a great piece of wood wouldn’t you want to make as many bowls out it as possible out of it? Just seemed like a waste of such good wood. I Would like to hear your thoughts on this. I do enjoy watching you videos.
Great series of video's Jimmy. Always a joy to watch a master at work. I was curious about one thing though. With such an expensive piece of wood why not use a bowl coring setup to get some more bowls out of that? I have always thought about getting one but realized it would only make sense on large and expensive pieces of wood. (I am not experienced enough to justify the expense on really large pieces of burl. Yet.)

Where do we get wood like that??? Beautiful. I was very sad to see Jimmy not use some kind of coring tool to save at least a small thin bowl in the inside instead of throwing away all that beautiful burl in the inside of the bowl. I guess he must have burl to burn.
Yes I thought the same thing, as he kept talking about how truly awesome the wood was. I have access to many madrone burls on my property, and I still core all of them
@@jimmyclewes ha ha what a coincidence finished watching your lidded oriental box, for the fourth time, gonna tackle it. i was hoping hss, have but don't care for carbide, i'll research it further to source one. thank you
@@jimmyclewes thank you again, i'll do that very thing. have a lot of Sorby tools but maybe over looked that scraper. a large well liked hamlet negative rake scraper currently my go to
people like you are quite rare, i live a very quiet life and had no idea you carried tools, found your site after some stumbling and have the your scraper coming. thank you for the way you responded.
I was really disappointed when you didn't core that beautiful burl. Such a waste, you could have got at least 2 more beautiful bowls out of that burl. An outstanding bowl but I would have rather a set of 3 or 4. Richard...

I don’t core for exactly that reason. I don’t have that many pieces to justify the cost and having a tool lying around doing nothing.
