I also started at a small firm right out of college over a decade ago and they actually were willing to pay for me to get certified. I went to Boston University 100% online and I was able to become certified in about 6 months while I was training at my firm. It’s not the CP certification but I have the certificate and it really helped me to advance. Now that I have a masters and over 10 years in the field I’m making a top salary at a Fortune 500 firm. But you can definitely get hired right out of college, I studied Political Science and they liked that my major required a lot of writing and research. Every firm is different, sometimes it’s just who you know for that first job. Just get in the door and then you can figure out if you need any additional training.

Super helpful and informative! My first job was through a small firm and the attorney gave me on the job training. Now that I’m older and looking to make a career change, I’m getting my certification to give my resume a boost since I’ve been out of law for so long

Some public sector paralegal positions offer opportunities to promote into higher executive positions. These executive positions are typically higher paying positions.

Excellent advice, and thanks for the good video. I’m looking for a career change from transportation to legal due to injury. Enrolling in the Paralegal Studies program hopefully in Spring or Summer. Volunteer/pro bono is an excellent idea. 💡

Queen I am so thankful I came across your vlog. I got my Bachelors in Communications with a Criminal Justice minor. After graduating I entered into case management and state/federal funding policies. It’s been a very rewarding career, and I plan to stay, but my original career goal was to become a paralegal. I long to have even the role of a part-time legal
assistant or researcher at a firm. So I wanted to ask, did you start in the legal field right after college, or did you find another career path? The communications degree definitely helped me to thrive in my current field, and my love to research and bullheaded attitude to get answers, has helped me to grow with my company. All that to say, my transferable skills could fill the gaps of lack of experience, I just want to get back into my passion for law. Thank you.

This is invaluable advice! I have subscribed! Actually I was just at your recent video about your landing a corporate job as a paralegal. Congrats!
I've been debating as to whether I should pursue a paralegal certificate. Idk how I got to the position that I'm in now, with literally no experience in paralegal work, so all I can say is Glory be to God! My boss is great and we are an in house counsel for a private company. I just feel a bit intimidated by the cost of the certificate program. Idek where I'll be in the next 5 years. Definitely don't want to be a lawyer that's for sure. So that alone is enough for me to deter from pursuing it. Any advice?

Out of all the types of training you mentioned, which do you think is best? Not necessarily only in terms of salary because I would imagine an associates degree would trump all the other levels of training. I guess my question really is between the certificate and the associates degree, which is best? I heard you mention that getting certified in the field would allow someone the opportunity to give training courses to others if ever they wanted to go that route; that sounds interesting to me but I’m not sure which route to choose.

Thanks for sharing the video. I was a Paralegal for a major law firm, specializing in Civil Litigation and Chapter 7 Bankruptcy. I do have a certification and a bachelor's degree. I am interested in re-entering the field as a freelancer for a 2nd career choice. I currently work as an Underwriter for an insurance company for 18 yrs. Do you know of any remote positions I can research?

Your videos are so informative and i’m so glad i found these. I’m a senior in high school and want to become a paralegal and then go to law school like you. But I want to major in criminal justice, do you think that will cause any problems in California? I can always switch to legal studies since I haven’t enrolled in classes yet. I’m going to Community College for my first two years then transferring into a California State school.

Thank you so much for this video - super helpful. Do you know if a certificate is equal to a certain number of years of experience to potential employers? Trying to decide if the certificate is worth it. I have a bachelor’s degree in criminology and no experience, and can’t decide if I should find something entry level or go the certificate route. Thanks!
